Spring 2024 Capstone: A Rewarding Experience
For two decades, the Ying Wu College of Computing Capstone Program has been an instrumental part of NJIT’s academic experience. Senior Success: Interior Designer Martina Hanna Shares Her Highlights at HCAD and NJIT
When Martina Hanna ’24 started her studies at NJIT, she was a civil engineering major. But when the pandemic hit, she took a different route, one that was meant to be. “I was just too scared to do it because I didn't have a portfolio,” Hanna explained the process of switching her major to interior design. “But during COVID I had so much free time that I actually developed one and really looked into it more. I got in, they let me change my majors. I was like, ‘amazing!’” As she looks back to those days, she notes how the classes weren’t feeding her creative side.

The NJIT baseball team swept a doubleheader from first place Bryant on Saturday at Yogi Berra Stadium, first beating the Bulldogs 3-2 in seven innings, before completing the sweep with a 9-8 win in 11 innings in the nitecap.

Danna Valentina Sánchez Hernández '25 dio un gran paso al dejar su país natal, Colombia, para realizar sus estudios universitarios en los Estados Unidos, y ahora esta decisión está dando sus frutos en NJIT – su investigación que explora la dinámica de fluidos y la locomoción de la vida marina le ha otorgado la oportunidad de ganar la prestigiosa beca Goldwater. Este año la clase de los ganadores de la beca Goldwater está compuesta por sólo 438 académicos de todo Estados Unidos.

NJIT to Enhance Campus Infrastructure with Strategic Relocation of Administrative Offices
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is pleased to announce a significant development in its ongoing efforts to optimize resources and enhance operational efficiency. In collaboration with The Fidelco Group (landlord), Altice (sublandlord) and Drew Persson and Frank Pagano of Avison Young (broker to Altice), NJIT will relocate several non-student-facing administrative offices to 494 Broad St. in Newark, New Jersey.

Extended Reality Lab Opens, Stocked with Latest Tech for Education
New Jersey Institute of Technology has a new Extended Reality (XR) Laboratory on campus, where students and faculty can learn to use augmented- and virtual-reality as a learning and teaching tool. The lab is now open in Guttenberg Information Technologies Center, room 1402, across from the NJIT makerspace. It’s operated by the digital learning office and complements Ying Wu College of Computing’s MIXR Lab, where researchers study XR itself, on the third floor of the same building.

Undergrad's Research Journey from Colombia to NJIT Sparks Goldwater Success
Danna Valentina Sanchez Hernandez '25 took a big leap leaving her home country of Colombia to pursue her undergrad studies in the U.S., but that journey is paying off at NJIT — her research exploring the fluid dynamics and locomotion of marine life has recently led to a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. This year’s Goldwater class is comprised of just 438 scholars from across the U.S.

NJIT Undergrads Explore Space Weather During 2024 Total Eclipse
While thousands traveled westward and northward from New Jersey through bumper-to-bumper traffic to reach the totality of the solar eclipse on April 8, NJIT undergraduate physics students Anneliese Schmidt ’24 and Joseph Visone ’25 were finally able to relax. For them, the race to the eclipse was over, having finally finished deploying instrumentation in upstate New York to explore the question — How does the eclipse change the space environment near Earth?

Men's Lacrosse Wins Season Finale Over UMass Lowell, 12-4
The greatest season in the history of the NJIT men's lacrosse program ended on a resounding high note. The Highlanders (8-6, 1-6 AE) secured the first winning season in program history with a 12-4 victory over the UMass Lowell Riverhawks (0-12, 0-7 AE) Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Women Now Represent Nearly a Quarter of NJIT's Department of Public Safety
NJIT Department of Public Safety Chief Kevin Kesselman’s appreciation for the value of female officers is born from experience. For nine years, his partner in the department was Edna Garcia. She retired as a detective sergeant in 2020 but left a lasting impression on Kesselman, so much so that when he became chief in July 2022, adding women to the force became a top priority. Shortly thereafter, the department joined a national coalition to increase female representation in policing by 2030.

NJIT Student Engineers Excel at Regionals, Advance to National Finals
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) emerged triumphant at the recent American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Metropolitan Student Symposium, showcasing their engineering prowess and securing top positions across multiple competitions. Held at Stony Brook University from April 12-14, the symposium featured competition among 13 universities from New Jersey and New York. NJIT students, under the guidance of several advisors, demonstrated exceptional skills and innovation, earning accolades in various categories and earning spots in society-wide finals.

MakeNJIT, in Second Year, Focuses on Infrastructure Hardware Hacks
An all-freshman team, Rackify, was the top NJIT winner and third overall at this year’s MakeNJIT hardware hackathon, creating a smart bicycle rack that automatically locks your ride by activating an RFID reader and extending an arm through the spokes or frame.

Southland Conference Champions, Men's Tennis Captures First-Ever Conference Title
Second-seeded NJIT captured the 2024 Southland Conference title with a 4-3 victory over top-seeded Incarnate Word Saturday evening. The Highlanders (19-5) won their sixth straight match and registered their first-ever conference title at any level. The 19 wins are the most wins since the 2009-10 season when the Highlanders won 18. Box Score

NJIT Computer Science and Engineering Experts Talk About 'Smart' Cities
Accomplished computer science and engineering professors at New Jersey Institute of Technology were among the featured speakers at a conference about creating “smart” cities that was organized by two centers of NJIT’s Martin Tuchman School of Management: the Leir Research Institute and Hub for Creative Placemaking. Distinguished Professor of Computer Science Guiling “Grace” Wang talked about her research into developing responsive traffic signals whose timing adjusts based on the volume of traffic. Artificial intelligence is central to that project.
