Two Research Papers on Mitigating Potential Security Flaws in LLMs Presented at ACM CCS 2024

Allison Cannon Named America East Rookie of the Week
Allison Cannon has been named America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week the league office announced on Monday. In a 1-1 week with the Highlanders, Cannon averaged 10.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.0apg. Cannon and the Highlanders earned its first win at home inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center on November 13 with a 73-52 victory over two-time defending Northeast Conference Champions Sacred Heart.

Tricking the Body into Replacing Lost Muscle
The human body can heal itself, but only up to a point. If an injury removes 20% or more of a muscle — as can happen in car accidents, certain surgeries or explosions in combat zones — natural processes can’t, on their own, replace it. Instead, the wound seals up, covered by scar tissue. “The body sees this extensive loss of tissue as an insurmountable void,” says Jonathan Grasman, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering.

Olivia Kulyk Selected America East Rookie of the Week
Olivia Kulyk has been selected America East Conference Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Kulyk, the Highlanders freshman from Edinboro, PA, averaged 11.3ppg and 4.7rpg. The 6-foot-1 guard made her first collegiate start of her young career in a Highlander uniform in NJIT's 80-60 season-opening victory at Saint Francis U. She finished with 10 points, 3-for-6 from three-point range to go along with two rebounds.

NJIT Researcher Uses Nanoparticles to Develop Cancer Therapies
NJIT’s Kathleen McEnnis, assistant professor of chemical and materials engineering, is pioneering a new approach in cancer treatment through innovative drug-delivery nanoparticles. Her research focuses on treating aggressive types of breast cancer, using platinum-based nanoparticles that target cancer cells without damaging healthy tissue. This breakthrough could mark a significant step forward in minimizing the side effects of chemotherapy.

Women's Soccer Kennedy Westbrook Named To America East All-Rookie Team
Kennedy Westbrook was named to the America East All-Rookie Team, the conference announced on Friday. This marks the fourth consecutive season that NJIT had an All-Rookie Team selection. Westbrook earned America East Rookie of the Week honors on September 23 after recording the first three points of her collegiate career, including one goal and one assist against Bryant on September 22.

NJIT Research Team Innovates in Princeton FlyWire Codex Challenge
An NJIT computational research team made impressive strides at the Princeton FlyWire Codex Data Challenge. Teams were tasked to solve a highly complex problem: analyzing the intricate network of neurons in the brain of a Drosophila melanogaster — commonly known as the fruit fly. Teams had to treat this neural network as a massive, interconnected graph and work to determine the best possible ordering of neurons. The goal was to maximize the efficiency of the brain's neural pathways, creating an optimal flow of information within this tiny but surprisingly complex system.
