Qirui Tian - ECE PhD Student of the Month - April 2025
Qirui Tian is a Ph.D. candidate supervised by Dr. Qing Liu in the ECE Department at NJIT. Qirui joined Dr. Liu's lab in September 2021 and has research that focuses on High-Performance Computing (HPC), data reduction, I/O and storage systems.

Men's Volleyball Sweeps D'Youville for Final Non-Conference Match
The NJIT men's volleyball team moved back into the win column, sweeping visiting D'Youville, 3-0, to conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center. NJIT snaps a nine-match skid and improves to 8-12 overall while D'Youville moves to 5-11.

NJIT Undergrad Wins Association for Women in Mathematics' National Essay Contest
As most students were buried in final exams last December, Iniobong Ofonime took an extra assignment outside her usual work as an engineering student — rather than applying mathematics to solve problems, she decided to profile an inspirational mathematician. Her efforts have added up to a first-place finish among undergraduates in the Association for Women in Mathematics' (AWM) national essay competition, announced fittingly on International Women's Day.

NJIT Computing Professor Zhi Wei Named Fellow of AAAS, Follows IEEE Honor
Zhi Wei, a bioinformaticist, was elected to the 2024 Fellows class of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science. Wei, who joined NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing in 2008 and now holds the role of distinguished professor, also became an IEEE Fellow in 2024.

YWCC Makes an Impact at AAAI Conference 2025
Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) was a notable presence at the 39th Annual AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence during the month of March. Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean for Research and External Relations Guiling “Grace” Wang served as Sponsorship Chair for this year’s event, in addition to co-coordinating YWCC’s sponsorship of the AAAI Student Hackathon with Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Brook Wu and serving as one of 10 Women Mentors for the women mentoring lunch program.

Computing Student Earns Spot in One of the World's Most Competitive Hackathons
Haley Patel, an undergraduate computer science student in the Ying Wu College of Computing, recently represented NJIT at Stanford University's TreeHacks 2025, one of the most competitive hackathons globally. Sponsored by tech giants like NVIDIA, Google and OpenAI, TreeHacks received more than 12,000 applications, and selected only 1,000 participants.

NJIT Highlander Model Rocket is a Transformer, Becomes Drone, Lands Itself
The NJIT Rocketry Club is experimenting with a model that autonomously lands itself standing up, a la SpaceX, but accomplished through novel methods. SpaceX rockets fire their liquid fuel thrusters while descending. Other hobbyists have already tried to duplicate that method, so the Highlanders devised a unique approach: next year, they want to make the nose cone of their Project Lotus rocket unfold like flower petals, revealing a drone that takes control.

Princeton Review Ranks NJIT at No. 36 Nationally in Game Design
New Jersey Institute of Technology ranks No. 36 nationally among the top 50 undergraduate schools for game design, according to The Princeton Review. That’s an improvement of 13 places from NJIT’s last ranking. Regionally, NJIT also stands out, at No. 10 in the Northeast. The high marks support the latest findings of Animation Career Review, which ranks NJIT at No. 15 on the East Coast and No. 1 in New Jersey.

SIGCHI Design Jam Showcases the Fruits of Mixing Computing with Creativity
The annual SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction) Design Jam happened during an inspired nine-hour designathon beginning on Saturday, March 8 at 9 a.m. and finishing at 1 p.m. the following day. The event invites students studying human-computer interaction, digital design, web and information systems and cyberpsychology to form teams of four to create an interactive prototype (Figma, front-end code, paper prototype, etc.) that will solve a real user problem.
