SIGCHI Design Jam Showcases the Fruits of Mixing Computing with Creativity
The annual SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction) Design Jam happened during an inspired nine-hour designathon beginning on Saturday, March 8 at 9 a.m. and finishing at 1 p.m. the following day. The event invites students studying human-computer interaction, digital design, web and information systems and cyberpsychology to form teams of four to create an interactive prototype (Figma, front-end code, paper prototype, etc.) that will solve a real user problem.

Experts from NJIT, Carnegie Mellon Find the Pen is Mightier than the Data
Plenty of researchers already study how to tell if online writing bears the traits of artificial intelligence — but Michael Laudenbach, in the humanities and social sciences department at NJIT’s Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts, is studying what traits indicate that digital prose was crafted by analog humans.

Gender's Role in Climate Change, AI Highlighted at NJIT Women's Tech Conference
A keynote speaker at NJIT’s Women Designing the Future conference explained the imperative for holistic approaches to climate change policy, while another shared her tale of breaking through glass ceilings to develop innovative artificial intelligence software. The speakers — Rhiana Gunn-Wright, who orchestrated behind-the-scenes policymaking for the 2019 Green New Deal, and Danielle Feinberg, visual effects supervisor at Pixar — were on campus March 7 to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the NJIT Murray Center for Women in Technology, and also for Women’s History Month.

NJIT's First-Year Engineers 'Dive' into Design, Shaping the Future at Annual Showcase
The spirit of innovation and hands-on learning was in full force at the Newark College of Engineering's (NCE) annual First-Year Engineering Design Showcase, a highlight of National Engineers Week. This popular event, a testament to NJIT's commitment to early-stage practical engineering experience, saw NCE’s brightest first-year minds — 180 presenters on 51 teams — show their innovative projects.

Assistant Professor Zhihao "Zephyr" Yao of the Department of Computer Science at NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing has been named among IEEE Computing’s Top Early Career Professionals. This prestigious recognition is awarded to individuals worldwide who have demonstrated exceptional early-career achievements and are actively shaping the future of technology in the fields of artificial intelligence, software engineering and hardware.

Nine Track and Field Athletes Earned All-East Honors at the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships
The NJIT track and field teams earned All-East honors in nine events at the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships this weekend at Boston University Track and Tennis Center. Nine medalists is the most at an IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships in program history. The top eight finishers in each event earned medalist and All-East honors.

Amir Ziaeddini - ECE PhD Student of the Month - March 2025
Amir Ziaeddini is currently a Ph.D. student at NJIT, advised by Professor Joerg Kliewer, focusing on privacy-preserving techniques in decentralized federated learning networks. His research interests include wireless communications, signal processing, and machine learning. Before that, from 2012 to 2023, he worked in industry as a researcher in an R&D center and as a Radio Access Network (RAN) planning engineer at MCI, a mobile operator in Iran.

CBS Highlights NJIT Public Safety's Groundbreaking All-Women 48-Hour Shift
The weight of the badge is the same, but the story behind it is profoundly different. NJIT’s Department of Public Safety is taking progress to a new high-water mark when the March 24-25 shift will be staffed completely by its women. Featured on CBS New York, this dedicated team is demonstrating that though the job for those 48-hours is no different than any other, its significance cannot be ignored.

NJIT Mathematician to Help Map Earth's Last Frontier with Navy Grant
We’ve mapped nearly all of Mars’ surface from orbit, yet we know less about Earth’s ocean floor — almost 75% remains unmapped in high resolution. This terrestrial blind spot is driving NJIT Mathematics Professor Eliza Michalopoulou’s latest research, funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). The project aims to improve how scientists explore the vast, uncharted ocean floor through sound.

'Insect Isle' Selected as Winning Proposal in Honors College Biodiversity Initiative
NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College held its First-Year Seminar Biodiversity Initiatives colloquium, in which six student-led proposals were presented to increase and sustain biodiversity through a campus planting. This year’s plan focused around a renovation near Faculty Memorial Hall. These student-driven initiatives allow for the Urban Ecology Lab (UEL), ADHC, the Real Estate Development and Capital Operations (REDCO) and the Office of Sustainability to team up together to make NJIT’s campus into a more sustainable and biodiverse community.

Moore's Buzzer-Beater Lifts NJIT over Binghamton in Season Finale
Tim Moore Jr. nailed a three-pointer jumper from the corner as time expired to give the Highlanders a dramatic 75-72 victory over Binghamton on Tuesday night. Moore finished the game with 22 points for his sixth 20-point game of the season, and his game-winner was his third three-point make in four attempts.

Men's Fencing Registers Second Place Finish at 2025 MACFA Championships
The NJIT men's fencing team earned a second-place finish for the third consecutive season at the 2025 MACFA Championships Sunday afternoon hosted by Drew University. Michael Bindas, in his first season at the helm of the Highlanders, earned 2025 MACFA Coach of the Year.

Highlanders Complete Weekend Sweep Over Iona
The NJIT baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Iona after winning both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Highlanders broke out the bats in a game one win, 16-3, before using a gem from MT Morrissey in game two for a 3-2 win. Game 1: NJIT 16, Iona 3

Fruit Fly Research Led NJIT Scientists and Edison Teens to Better AI Habits on Supercomputers
A competition to compare the brains of male vs. female fruit flies led New Jersey Institute of Technology researchers and two high school students to a second-place finish in the latest edition of the FlyWire Data Challenge, but more importantly the team learned new lessons about using artificial intelligence for setting up research with supercomputers.

NJIT Selects Workday to Power Project SPARK: New Enterprise Resource Planning Tool
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) announced the selection of Workday, Inc., as its new enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution for HR, Finance and Student. This transformative initiative, known as Project SPARK, will modernize NJIT's administrative and operational systems, enabling the university to better serve its students, faculty and staff for the next decade and beyond.

Expanding Housing: NJIT's Rebuild of Oak Hall Will More Than Double Its Beds
New Jersey Institute of Technology is rebuilding its second oldest residence hall to meet a burgeoning demand for housing at the growing public university. The new Oak Hall on Summit Street in Newark will contain 453 beds in 154 units — more than double the current totals. The units will take the form of apartments for either two or four students, complete with kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms. There will also be single units for resident assistants.

Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 19 Penn State in EIVA Action
The NJIT men's volleyball team swept No. 19 Penn State in EIVA Conference men's volleyball action Friday evening inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center. The Highlanders, which moved back into the win column, swept the Nittany Lions, 3-0, 25-21, 29-27 and 25-22.

An AI Class That is Exclusive and Needed Now More Than Ever
A famous movie quote included the phrase, “…what I do have are a very particular set of skills.” The same can be said by Associate Professor Andrew Sohn in Ying Wu College of Computing’s (YWCC) department of computer science, whose course, CS 485: Intro to GPU Cluster Programming, may well be – technically - a class like no other in the U.S. due to his work with NASA, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as his venture capital-backed startup company in Silicon Valley.
