The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) came out with its annual regional rankings for teams and individuals on Friday, June 7 and the NJIT women's tennis team was represented on both lists.
The Highlanders were ranked seventh in the Northeast Region after posting a 15-5 overall record this season. Additionally, Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli were ranked #10 in the Northeast Regional rankings in doubles competition.
"The entire women's team deserves credit for the results this season," said second-year head coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald. "We had a good year and they deserve the ranking recognition. I'm happy with the work ethic and commitment the team showed this year."
The Highlanders concluded their 2023-24 campaign with a 15-5 dual match record - their first season of 15 or more wins since 2012-13 (15-6) and their first season with five or fewer losses after double-digit wins since 2011-12 (21-3). The Highlanders won a stretch of 10 straight matches midway through the season, marking the second longest streak in program history, behind 14 match-run in 2011-12.
Cocero and Wipfli, NJIT's top doubles tandem, combined for a 14-6 overall record. The duo won seven straight matches beginning on February 10 to March 9, 2024.
"Laura and Irene are an amazing doubles team," Piorkowski McDonald added. "They are always hungry to compete.. They are smart, powerful and creative with their doubles play. As good a season as they had in 2023-24, they are a team to watch for next season. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish."
