At NJIT, Leaders Share Community Violence Strategies
Federal, state, municipal and community leaders convened at New Jersey Institute of Technology to share strategies on how to address the roots of violence in communities across New Jersey. The Community Violence Intervention Summit was led by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and included U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Patricia Teffenhart, executive director of the Division of Violence Intervention and Victim Assistance in the N.J. Office of the Attorney General.

NJIT Earns National Distinction for 'Best Value' From Niche
Economic mobility was a new factor in Niche ranking New Jersey Institute of Technology No. 45 among all U.S. institutions for “Best Value,” reaffirming the university’s return on investment to its students and alumni. NJIT earned the No. 1 spot for “Best Value” among New Jersey public institutions. Niche, a college ranking and review platform, evaluated 4,048 public and private four-year colleges nationwide and developed separate lists for the best academics, value, food, dorms and college life.

Army Supports Summer Interns, Designing New Robots at NJIT Research Center
A little-known R&D facility, operated by NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute with the U.S. Army Picatinny Arsenal for its primary client, is beginning to thrive one year after moving off-campus. The facility is called COMET — Collaborative Operationalized Manufacturing Engineering and Training — located about 30 miles northwest of NJIT’s Newark campus, close to Picatinny, which is the Army headquarters for conventional weapons development.

New Jersey Innovation Institute Names Michael Johnson as Next President
New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), a corporation of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Johnson as NJII President. Johnson emerged from a deep and talented pool of candidates and will begin his tenure at NJII on October 10, 2023.

Turkey Earthquake Victim, Ibrahim Aras, Finds Hope in NJIT Business School Scholarship
A natural disaster in Turkey brought transfer student Ibrahim Aras, who is studying financial technology, to NJIT's Martin Tuchman School of Management. Before the magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit on February 6, 2023, all was well with Aras, at the time a computer science major, who graduated from one of the best international science high schools in Turkey and fulfilled his dream to attend college in America, where he studied at Drexel University.

Women's Basketball Unveils 2023-24 Non-Conference Slate
NJIT women's basketball head coach Mike Lane announced the non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 season, which includes four teams that reached postseason in 2023 and is highlighted by a visit from Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent Notre Dame and a trip south to Miami (FL).

NJIT and New York Red Bulls Join Forces in Shopping Spree for Rising High School Students
As part of its partnership with the New York Red Bulls (RBNY), NJIT hosted a shopping spree at the Target in Kearny for ten rising high school students. As a surprise, players from the hometown club accompanied the kids as they geared up for the upcoming school year. The event, which also included NJIT students and the university’s mascot, served as an opportunity to interact and support the community. One by one students arrived at Target and were paired with Red Bull players. Matthew Hernandez arrived accompanied by his father Peter Hernandez and little brother.

NJIT Police Lead New York City SEAL Swim Charity Event
NJIT's Department of Public Safety was once again tasked with the honor to lead hundreds of Navy SEALs, veterans, police officers, fire fighters and first responders in the pre-swim run from the Liberty State Park Sept. 11 Monument to the Hudson. Participants then swam across the Hudson and ran to their final stop at the Sept. 11 memorial in lower Manhattan as part of the charitable event.

The NJIT women's soccer team put together a record-setting performance in its first victory of the season, a 7-0 shutout of the Saint Peter's Peacocks Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Harvesting the Toxic Blooms of Summer
*"Harvesting the Toxic Blooms of Summer" is part of NJIT's 2023 Research Magazine* Amid summer’s cornucopia, there is one proliferation that is universally dreaded: the toxic algae blooms that float on lakes and streams, killing fish, gobbling oxygen from the water and chasing away swimmers. Composed of tiny organisms such as single-cell phytoplankton, macroalgae and cyanobacteria, the phosphorescent blue-green clusters are impossible to miss, but difficult to capture.

An estimated 10 quintillion insects are alive on the planet, a staggering number that is at the center of a data crisis for entomologists. Researchers are struggling to understand historic shifts taking place among insect populations amid climate change and other environmental threats, from deforestation to pesticide use.

NJIT Showcases the Most Impactful Research and Innovation from Students
Stuti Mohan, a senior biomedical engineering student, was the winner of the top Dr. James F. Stevenson Innovation Award at the 2023 Undergraduate Summer Research and Innovation (URI) Symposium at NJIT. Her project sought to identify a non-invasive yet precise method to diagnose the tapping foot of a subject. Mohan’s research area in the Sensorimotor Quantification and Rehabilitation Lab (SQRL) is the ongoing pursuit of improving concussion management.

NJIT Honors College Summer Research Tradition Funds Record Number of Scholars
NJIT’s Honors Summer Research Institute scholars added to their curriculum this summer as the undergraduates focused on a wide range of research projects that will help build their knowledge as they seek future career goals. In its sixth year, the Honors Summer Research Institute (HSRI) hosted a record number of Scholars, more than doubling in size, and awarding over $90,000 in grants. The HSRI provides participants with an eight-week interdisciplinary workshop sequence that helps them develop their research projects and communication skills.

New Jersey Institute of Technology once again finds itself in selective company in The Princeton Review’s annual guide to the best colleges and universities in the United States. Just 14% of all of the country’s four-year institutions made the guide, “The Best 389 Colleges for 2024.” Selection is based primarily on the experiences of students — which are culled through surveys — and the featured schools are listed alphabetically.

NJIT Computing Alumnus David Ruchman Began as Intern, Now He's the CEO
Nobody expects their summer internship to eventually lead to a job as CEO, but that's exactly what happened to New Jersey Institute of Technology computer science alumnus David Ruchman. Ruchman, who graduated in 2006 and added a computer science M.S. in 2009, became chief executive of Powersolution, a 20-person IT services firm in Midland Park, in 2022.
