NJIT Awarded $10 Million for Technical Assistance at Polluted Brownfield Sites Through EPA Grant
New Jersey Institute of Technology has been awarded $10 million by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of a $315 million initiative from President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda to expedite the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites across the country. The funding comes entirely from the historic $1.5 billion investment from Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Brownfields are abandoned or underutilized properties that may have hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants present, making their redevelopment complex.

La Asociación Hispana de Estudiantes Universitarios de Computación (con siglas en inglés HACCS) en la Ying Wu College of Computing de NJIT ha arrancado, y ya ha tenido una gran participación en sus reuniones inaugurales. *"Lab-Simulated Earthquakes Test the Mettle of 'High-Performance' Building Materials" is part of NJIT's 2023 Research Magazine* Despite advances in construction design and materials, a powerful 7.8 magnitude tremor on the San Andreas fault could kill a projected 1,800 people, injure an additional 50,000 and demolish 200 million square feet of commercial, public and residential buildings, according to a recent study. Even the newest, most up-to-date structures would be toppled at a rate of up to 1 in 10.

NJIT Earns National Distinction in Money's 2023 List of 'Best Colleges'
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in a new “Best Colleges” list released by Money. Money evaluated 736 institutions from the more than 2,400 four-year public and private nonprofit colleges in the U.S. and focused on 24 factors in three main categories that surveys have shown are the most important to students: quality of education, affordability and alumni outcomes.

Publicly traded companies manipulate their financial documents more often when their officers and directors have well-connected social circles, Assistant Professor Ming Taylor (Ming Fang) of NJIT's Martin Tuchman School of Management found, earning her the Best Paper of 2022 award from British Accounting Journal.

First-Class Success: NJIT Mayor's Scholar Pursues Law Degree at University of Maryland
When Kiaja Jones ’23 arrived at NJIT from Newark’s Technology High School in 2019, she did so as part of the inaugural class of local scholars from the Mayor’s Honors Scholar Program. Now she’s leaving her home city, diploma in-hand, as a reflection of the program’s early success and will be pursuing a law degree at the University of Maryland in the fall.

Hispanic Association of Computing College Students Takes Off at NJIT
The Hispanic Association of Computing College Students (HACCS) at NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing has taken off and is already seeing a great turnout in their inaugural meetings. This Hispanic-oriented club seeks to cater to the needs of Hispanic computing students and create a group that will allow them to support each other with computing coursework and make ties that create a homelike atmosphere at NJIT.

Men's Tennis Finishes Season with Regional Ranking, Perez Ramos Ranked Regionally
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) came out with its annual regional rankings for teams and individuals earlier this month and the NJIT men's tennis team was represented on both lists. The Highlanders were ranked ninth in the northeast region after posting a 15-8 record this season. Additionally, Pablo Perez Ramos was ranked #13 in the Northeast Regional Rankings.

NJIT's Suresh Kumar, Lecturer & Entrepreneurial Director, Elected President of TiE NJ
Suresh U. Kumar, senior university lecturer and director of entrepreneurial programs in NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC), has been elected by the Board of Directors of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) as the next president of the New Jersey chapter, effective July 1, 2023. TiE is one of the world’s largest entrepreneurship support organizations with over 30,000 members in 14 countries helping 25,000 startups with an economic impact of over $1 trillion, according to KPMG.

Researchers Develop Novel System Using Deep Reinforcement Learning To Improve Control Of Lower Limb
A team of researchers has developed a new method for controlling lower limb exoskeletons using deep reinforcement learning. The method, described in a study published in Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, enables more robust and natural walking control for users of lower limb exoskeletons.

How Video Games, a Support System and Becoming a Leader at NJIT Helped Me Manage My Mental Health
Growing up, I was very quiet, shy and introverted. As I started to discover myself in my teenage years, I began coming out of the closet at age 12. Because of this, I felt isolated at the time and so I found solace in video games and online forums and communities. I have always struggled with my mental health and it's taken me many years and a lot of work to be able to talk about it so openly. I used to try to hide it or make light of it, but it's been very painful and tough.

Uncharted Territory: NJIT Ecologist Investigates Forest Fate Amid Climate Change, Wildfire
Nearly a decade ago, a bark beetle infestation tore through southeast Wyoming's Snowy Range, transforming lush landscape of Medicine Bow National Forest into a tinderbox of dead lodgepole pine. In Sept. 2020 it ignited — what became known as the Mullen Fire raged beyond the parkland across 176,000 acres over the next month, fueled by the beetle-killed trees and unusually dry conditions. Xiaonan Tai, assistant professor of biological sciences and director of NJIT’s Ecohydrology Lab, is investigating the fate of the national forest.

Zhenlu Qin is a Ph.D. candidate in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). His advisor is Prof. Qing Liu of the HPC Lab. His research interests are in HPC computing, data reduction and data compression.
