Juneteenth Observance
Dear Highlanders, NJIT is proud to observe Juneteenth, a federal and state holiday that commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared that enslaved Black people in Texas were free, which officially ended slavery in the United States more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This historic occasion should serve as a poignant reminder that the pursuit of equity for all does not come easily or swiftly, in many cases, and must continue.

That is the purpose of this holiday, and I would like to extend my unwavering gratitude to NJIT’s veterans and current members of the Armed Forces for their service, their courage, and their selflessness.
