Giving Tuesday Generosity Inspires Fresh Produce Donation to NJIT Food Pantry by Paul Profeta
The NJIT community showed its heart on Giving Tuesday, raising a record-breaking $24,000 for the university's Food Pantry. The NJIT men's basketball team trailed by as many as 12 on Wednesday night, but battled back late, getting a put-back from veteran Kjell de Graaf with 2.0 seconds to play for an 80-77 victory over a Fordham squad that won 25 games last season.

NJIT Researcher Examines Birds' Vocal Development With Virtual Tutors
In the highly social world of the zebra finch, every male has a unique song: a brief motif resembling the squeak of a mechanical toy that he chirps, often in rapid succession, in courtship and communal gatherings. These songs are not innate. Pubescent finches develop their signature sound by listening to adult male birdsong which they then individualize with subtle variations in frequency, tonality and rhythm.

Sustainable Cities Summer Abroad in Copenhagen
Twelve NJIT students lived in the world’s most sustainable city this summer. There they considered the architect’s role in shaping urban space as well as the future of carbon negative building materials. The project was led by professors of practice at NJIT's Hillier College of Architecture and Design, Carrie Bobo and Charlie Firestone. The primary focus of the trip was to facilitate conversations between NJIT students and researchers and practitioners in Scandinavia.

Yuwei Liu - ECE PhD Student of the Month - December 2023
Yuwei Liu is in his fourth year of pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Under the advisement of Professor Xuan Liu in the Lab of biomedical optical imaging and sensing. His research focuses on optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT image analysis assisted by machine learning, and optically computed phase microscopy. What would you say that could be the next big thing in your area of research?

New NJIT Committee Tackles Gender Imbalance in Faculty
A new committee aims to accelerate gender equity among faculty members at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Women Faculty Advisory Committee, chaired by Nancy Steffen-Fluhr, will hold peer forums to examine key issues based on the testimony of junior faculty members. It also intends to poll women faculty to gather quantitative data. Both will fuel an action plan and create a foundation for measuring progress toward faculty gender diversity.

Men's Swimming Claims Fifth ECAC Winter Title In Program History
Champions once again! For the fifth time in program history and first time since 2019, the NJIT men's swimming and diving team has captured the ECAC Winter Championships title. The Highlanders completed their triumphant return to the meet after three years away (no meet in 2020, did not compete in 2021-22) by scoring 1692 points to hold off second place Monmouth (1279) and third place LIU (1063).

Exploring the Intricate World of Cellular Processes: A PhD's Path From Moscow to Princeton Via NJIT
Alina Emeilianova worked right up to her Ph.D graduation ceremony. Appearing as first author in a paper in Langmuir, a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Chemical Society, it is fitting that she snuck in one more notch of success in the twilight of her research career at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Technically this was submitted after her defense — some people just can’t turn it off.

First-Year Engineering Majors Bond in Classrooms and Rocket Flights
Hundreds of students in NJIT’s introductory engineering course, Fundamentals of Engineering Design 101, are having a greater shared experience during the fall 2023 semester than any incoming class since the 1990s. Back then, Newark College of Engineering began customizing the FED syllabus for each major field. Chemical engineering students may have learned more about compounding and processing, while civil engineering students learned the basics of surveying and transportation systems.

Scientists Build Tiny Biological Robots From Human Cells
Researchers have created tiny biological robots that they call Anthrobots from human tracheal cells that can move across a surface and have been found to encourage the growth of neurons across a region of damage in a lab dish.

Sebastian Robinson Earns Second-Straight America East Rookie of the Week Honor
NJIT freshman Sebastian Robinson was named the America East Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second-week in a row, the conference announced on Monday. Robinson averaged 18.0 ppg and 3.5 apg in a week where the Highlanders split a pair of games against Delaware State and Wagner.

Albert Dorman, Alumnus and Visionary Founding Benefactor of NJIT's Honors College, Passes Away at 97
Albert Dorman ’45 ’99 HON, founding benefactor of the Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT, passed away earlier this month at the age of 97. Born in rural New York, Dr. Dorman went on to graduate NJIT first in his class at the age of 19, with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.

Accreditation Team Seeks Public Input on NJIT Police Department
The NJIT Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of its program to achieve accreditation by verifying that it meets recognized professional best practices. Administered by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with best practice standards in five basic areas: the administrative function, the personnel function, the operations function, the investigative function, and the arrestee/detainee function.

Associate professors at the Hillier College of Architecture and Design, Gernot Riether and Andrzej Zarzycki, led a group of 16 NJIT students in a study abroad trip to Austria where they worked on the redesign of a public space that connects the art venues of the Kunstmeile, art mile, in Krems.

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce and African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey have recognized NJIT as an Emerging Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Influencer in the chambers’ annual Trailblazer Awards program. “This award affirms our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” said NJIT President Teik C. Lim. “Our goal is constant improvement as we attract, support and graduate an array of students from all backgrounds, including underrepresented residents in Newark and its surrounding communities. We want to embody the diverse world that we live in.”

Women's Basketball Off to a Hot Start: Balanced Scoring Leads NJIT Past Wagner
For the second straight game, NJIT had four players reach double-figures as the Highlanders cruised to an 80-36 home victory over visiting Wagner in women's basketball non-conference action Saturday afternoon inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. NJIT, off to a hot start in 2023, picked up its second straight win of the season and moved to 4-1 for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
