NJIT Architecture Professors and Students Help Launch Newark's Hope Village II
New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) was present on Monday as Mayor Ras J. Baraka, and the director of the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services Luis Ulerio opened the second iteration of Hope Village, “Come As You Are” Bridge Housing Community, located on Elizabeth Avenue.

NJIT Foundation Board Adopts New Name
In a significant move to align with contemporary values and foster a truly inclusive environment, the Board of Overseers of the Foundation at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) unanimously passed a resolution to change its official name. The governing body will now be known as the "Board of Directors of the Foundation at NJIT.”

Tariq Francis Earns Third America East Rookie of the Week Honor
NJIT's Tariq Francis was named America East men's basketball Rookie of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 79-73 loss to visiting UAlbany in both teams conference openers. Francis established a new career-high with 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting for the Highlanders. The freshman also dished out six assists to tie his previous career-best.

Ying Wu College of Computing Professor Presents Research at Multiple Top Scientific Events in Asia
Professor Cristian Borcea from the Department of Computer Science recently returned from a brief tour of China and Japan where he presented research papers on his continuing work with federated learning for mobile devices as well as a novel approach for improving the revenue of online publishers in real-time Ad auctions.

Deniz Najafi - ECE PhD Student of the Month - January 2024
Deniz Najafi is a first-year Ph.D. student advised by Professor Shaahin Angizi at the ACAD Lab. Her research focuses on Processing-in-Memory and In-sensor computing. Beyond the world of research, Deniz harbors a deep appreciation for literature and is an avid reader. Her affinity for the arts was previously expressed through frequent visits to live theater shows. Now, with New York's vibrant cultural scene within reach, Deniz is thrilled at the opportunity to witness stage renditions of the literary works she has passionately read.

Professor Zhi Wei in Ying Wu College of Computing’s Department of Computer Science has been elevated to IEEE Fellow status effective Jan. 1, 2024. The appointment is in recognition of his significant contributions to knowledge discovery from biological data and in the field of bioinformatics.

NJIT Alum Develops Tech to Recycle Lithium-Ion Batteries
By Jesse Jenkins and Tracy Regan Chao Yan, who holds both a master's in chemistry and doctor of philosophy in physical chemistry combustion from New Jersey Institute of Technology, is the founder and chief executive officer of Princeton NuEnergy, which develops advanced technologies for recycling lithium-ion batteries. Since 2017, he has also served as a research associate at Princeton University’s Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education.

National Science Foundation Funds NJIT Professor Investigating Next-Gen Energy Storage
From laptops to cars, society has come to rely on rechargeable batteries — and the demand is only growing. This surge means researchers are racing to figure out the most efficient ways to manage this type of energy storage. While current designs utilize microparticle-based technology, it’s insufficient for the most affordable, safe and efficient batteries possible. Given advances in nanotechnology, Dibakar Datta, an associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology, is interested in deploying nanoparticles as battery electrodes.

It has been close to 50 years since Bob Medina ’75 graduated from NJIT as an engineer, and when he looks back at his journey, he marvels at how NJIT gave him the tools to excel. In fact, he still has the slide rule he used in class, in the days before calculators were allowed and laptops existed.

Men's Basketball Defends Its Way to Win in Non-Conference Finale vs. Morgan State
The NJIT men's basketball team started its New Year's celebration early with a Block Party at the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center on Sunday afternoon, blocking 14 shots en route to a 69-53 victory in its non-conference finale vs. Morgan State. Veteran big man Kjell de Graaf swatted away a career-high seven shots as the Highlanders led wire-to-wire, scoring the first 16 points of the game to build a comfortable lead early.

Women's Basketball Holds Off Visiting LIU for Final Home Win in 2023
Long Island Universiy outscored NJIT 20-9 in the fourth quarter but the Highlanders held off the visiting Sharks led by Trinity Williams' 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to pick up a 58-54 home victory for NJIT in the non-conference finale in 2023 on Sunday afternoon inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.

Voice Assistants 'Like Us' Affect How Users Process Misinformation, Study Suggests
Voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri now have the ears of an estimated 142 million users in the United States, but just how much we trust and listen to AI assistants for daily information may come down to how much we identify with them personality-wise. That’s the takeaway from a study led by researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Penn State University examining the impact of voice assistant (VA) personalities on user engagement and decision-making.

Two in a Row, Zuniga Nets Game-Best 23 Points in NJIT's Win Over Saint Francis U
The NJIT women's basketball team won its second straight game at home behind a game-best 23 points from sophomore Alejandra Zuniga as the Highlanders defeated visiting Saint Francis U, 68-41, Friday evening inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center. NJIT, which will break for Christmas, improves to 7-5 overall and 5-1 inside the WEC while Saint Francis U drops to 1-9 on the season.
