University Learning Center Renamed to Honor Alumna Norma Clayton
New Jersey Institute of Technology yesterday officially recommissioned the university's tutoring laboratory as the Norma J. Clayton '81 Learning Center, in honor of the alumna and benefactor of the university, who earned a B.S. in industrial administration here, spurring an accomplished leadership career at companies like Boeing and RCA.

NJIT Alumni Make ROI-NJ's List of 2021 ROI Influencers: People of Color
ROI-NJ recognized two alumni of New Jersey Institute of Technology as “difference makers” in its list of 2021 ROI Influencers: People of Color. The honorees, Elisa Charters and Marjorie Perry, remain connected to NJIT via board service. Charters is a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, Hispanic Latinx Leadership Council and the Advisory Board for its Martin Tuchman School of Management, while Perry chairs the university's Board of Overseers.

More Students Than Ever Attend NJIT, Most Diverse First-Year Class in History
NJIT is starting the 2021 academic year by setting records with its largest and most diverse student body ever. Total enrollment is up 25% over the last 10 years and this fall hit its highest mark yet at 11,901 students. The NJIT first-year class makes up a sizable part of that growth, with 25% more freshmen enrolled this year than last year, for a record 1,411 students. The largest ever first-year class also has the most female students at 29%. First-year enrollment totals for both men (1,005) and women (406) are the highest in NJIT’s history.

Members of NJIT's new Center for Artificial Intelligence Research will look to expand knowledge of the theory, data and applications of their field, which director Grace Wang said is quickly evolving from experimental to practical status.

2021 Virtual New Jersey Chemistry Olympians Tackle COVID Vaccines, Chemical Pollution
This summer, the 2021 Virtual New Jersey Chemistry Olympics (vNJCO) once again became the grounds for a fierce two weeks of competition between young chemists from high schools around the state. By the end, more than 130 attendees joined the competition’s award ceremony live — tuning in from England to California to hear long-time NJCO supporter and CSLA Dean Kevin Belfield give his customary welcome address and celebrate Olympic teams that participated in events following NJCO’s 2021 theme, “Chemistry and Current Events”.

An NJIT-Led Team Secures $3.7 Million to Tackle a Disabling, Concussion-Induced Eye Disorder
Nearly half of adolescents and young adults with lingering symptoms of concussion suffer from an eye coordination disorder that causes blurred and double vision, headaches and difficulties concentrating. There is no proven method for treating the condition when it occurs after a head injury.

Finance Professor Sees Opportunity to Help Community After Ida Floods
NJIT Assistant Professor Steve Taylor, of Millburn, is dissatisfied with how insurance companies deal with natural disasters and is preparing to offer an alternative. Taylor witnessed extreme flooding from Hurricane Ida early this month in Millburn, where he resides. He also saw that many of his neighbors and local small business owners had their claims denied, despite being loyal customers of their insurance companies, as they lacked flood policies. Some had been advised by insurance agents that it wasn't a flood zone, based on data and maps that became obsolete decades ago.

NJIT's Dhawan Wins a Coveted IEEE Award for a Widely Used Cancer Detection Device
For a pioneering invention that enables doctors to use light to look beneath the outer layer of the skin to detect diseases such as early-stage skin cancers, NJIT’s Atam Dhawan was tapped this year to receive one of IEEE’s preeminent honors, the Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMBS) William J. Morlock Award.

NJIT is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Daniel White as the University’s new associate provost for Online Programs effective Sept. 1, 2021. Dan comes to NJIT from Temple University where he served as associate vice provost and founding director of the Office of Digital Education (ODE) from 2014 to 2021.

NJIT Tops NJ Public Universities for Early-Career Salaries, Ranks 14 Nationwide
New Jersey Institute of Technology ranked No. 1 in New Jersey and 14th nationally among public schools for early-career salaries, with young alumni bringing home just under $125,000 on average against just $7,600 in average debt, according to Forbes 2021 Top Colleges ranking. Statewide, only private schools with higher tuition ranked above NJIT for early career salaries. In overall rankings, NJIT is No. 89 among public colleges nationwide, Forbes stated.

The NJIT men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2021 campaign with strong showings at the annual Fordham Fiasco meet Saturday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park.
