NJIT Names State Deputy Treasurer as University Sr. VP and CFO
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has named Catherine Z. Brennan as the university’s Senior Vice President (SVP)/Chief Financial Officer (CFO). She will begin her NJIT tenure on September 20, 2021.

NSF Continues Funding NJIT's Future Defenders of Government Computing
NJIT this month won its second grant from the National Science Foundation's CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, in which students studying toward master's degrees receive up to three years of free tuition and generous stipends, in exchange for working at government cybersecurity jobs after graduation.

NJIT Joins NSF Research Hub With Princeton, Rutgers, Delaware
New Jersey Institute of Technology today joined other area universities as part of a new regional research hub, funded by a $15 million National Science Foundation grant and led by Princeton University, to help faculty and students convert federally sponsored research into successful businesses.

NJIT Alumna and Trustee Norma B. Clayton Appointed to Nucor Board of Directors
Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in the United States, has announced that Norma Clayton ’81 has been appointed to its Board of Directors. Clayton, co-vice chair of NJIT’s Board of Trustees, brings decades of experience to the international steel manufacturer and will begin her tenure on the board Sept. 1.

NJIT is an International 'Best Maker School' in Inaugural List by Make: and Newsweek
New Jersey Institute of Technology is in rarified air as it has been recognized as one of 200 colleges and universities named a Best Maker School in Higher Education by Make: magazine and Newsweek. Across the university, NJIT houses facilities that encourage engineers, architects, designers, and scientists to create and test ideas, put theory into practice, and quickly iterate to develop solutions.

US DOE Funds NJIT/BASF 'Opportunistic Retrofitting' Sustainability Project
A partnership between NJIT’s Center for Building Knowledge and BASF’s Center for Building Excellence to develop sustainable home retrofit materials continues to bear fruit. Their project, “Renew-Wall,” is one of 44 across 20 states that will share an $82.6 million round of funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for projects aimed at reducing energy consumption in buildings and energy demand overall.

Alumna Afrida Kabir to Study Advanced Energy Solutions at Aalto University
Society consumes too much energy. Industry takes an especially large slice of the energy pie, and Afrida Kabir, a process engineer and 2016 NJIT chemical engineering graduate, is heading to Finland to study technologies that would curb industry’s energy appetite. Kabir recently joined the Advanced Energy Solutions master’s program at Aalto University on a full-ride scholarship to study drying processes, methods, and designs to make drying more efficient and sustainable.

Highlander Chess Club at NJIT: Competitive, Challenging and Victorious
Players on the Highlander Chess Club at NJIT offer different reasons for the game’s appeal — its competitiveness, the mental challenge, the feeling of control — but are united on the ultimate reason: the thrill of victory. “It feels good when you deliver a checkmate,” explained Lucas Scalora ’22, the club’s vice president. Or, as club President Jeffrey Luk ’24, put it, more bluntly, “What’s fun about chess is beating other people.”

NJIT Athletics Announces Return to In-Person Events This Fall
It's the good news you've all been waiting for! Fans will be back in the stands cheering on the Highlanders this Fall. NJIT's Department of Athletics welcomes back spectators to our Fall 2021 home events. Because the health and safety of NJIT's athletes, coaches & staff, opponents, fans and community is paramount; the Department of Athletics is requiring that all spectators wear a mask at NJIT home indoor and outdoor athletic events. The spectator universal masking policy is required regardless of vaccination status.

NJIT Expert Trains Robots to Use Their Hands, Earns NSF CAREER Grant
C-3PO walked upright and spoke six million languages, but never did much with his hands besides letting the wookie win at holochess. Such is the state of modern robotics and cyberintelligence, where a Boston Dynamics droid does backflips and Apple Siri maintains natural-language conversations, while precision manipulation of physical objects remains elusive, explained Cong Wang, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

In the span of just a few short weeks, NJIT student Braeden Perdue has gone from taking a summer job as a community organizer helping promote COVID-19 vaccine education and access across New Jersey, to becoming a voice for health care equality during the pandemic that has reached the White House and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Undergraduate Research and Innovation on Display at NJIT Symposium
Countless hours of research and preparation were on display at the Undergraduate Summer Research and Innovation (URI) Symposium as 134 students presented 108 projects to a group of peers, NJIT faculty and URI External Advisory Board members. The board selected three top project presentations for the Dr. James F. Stevenson Innovation Awards, named for the late educator and engineer who supported NJIT’s Interdisciplinary Design Studio, TechQuest Innovation and URI programs.

NJIT's Lenny Kaplan Selected as EIVA Conference President
Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) President, unanimously approved in a vote by the league's coaches, the conference office announced. Kaplan takes over the position from Ron Shayka, who announced his retirement from the EIVA's leadership post.

Marina Arrese Named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team
NJIT junior women's fencer Marina Arrese has been named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA NCAA Division I Academic All-America Women's At Large second team the CoSIDA Academic All-America program announced on Friday. The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
