Smart Play: NJIT Athletics Boasts a 25-Semester Streak in the Classroom
3.49 is not a baseball ERA, basketball steals per game, volleyball block average, or any other athletic statistic measured of the Highlanders this spring semester. Rather, it is their impressive cumulative grade point average. This semester marks the 25th straight that Highlander student athletes have held above a 3.0 GPA—a streak extending over 12 years.

NJIT Baseball Makes History, Will Play in First NCAA Division I Tournament
Update (May 31, 2021): The NJIT baseball team (26-22) will play in the program's first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament when the Highlanders visit No. 1 Arkansas (46-10) in the Fayetteville Regional on Friday, June 4 at Baum-Walker Stadium. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN3.

The NJIT baseball team trailed Maine 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth on Friday, but got a sacrifice fly from Daniel Helfgott and RBI single from Luke Longo to plate a pair of runs, win the game, and earn a spot in Saturday's America East Tournament Championship game back at Stony Brook's Joe Nathan Field

Accomplished Engineering Grad Says NJIT Opened Doors to Her Success
At NJIT, Sydney Sweet’s success extended beyond the classroom into research labs, cooperative educational experiences, a Goldwater scholarship and the opportunity to study in Australia. Remarkably, the chemical engineering major and Albert Dorman Honors College scholar also found time to tutor undergraduates in math and hold leadership roles in chemical engineering honor society Omega Chi Epsilon, the Science and Politics Society and Society of Musical Arts.

Hillier College Studio To Propose Improvements to Newark Penn Station
Working closely with New Jersey Transit staff, municipal planners, and other stakeholders, a fall studio at HCAD taught by Darius Sollohub will conceptually investigate both the interior and exterior areas of Newark Penn Station. The studio will serve as a design vanguard that anticipates a $190 million Request for Proposals that will soon be issued for improvements to Newark’s Penn Station and its environs. Concepts developed by students and based on stakeholder input will diversify the ideas that the future design teams can work with to improve the station.

Duetting Songbirds 'Mute' the Musical Mind of Their Partner to Stay in Sync
Art Garfunkel once described his legendary musical chemistry with Paul Simon, “We meet somewhere in the air through the vocal cords ... .” But a new study of duetting songbirds from Ecuador, the plain-tail wren (Pheugopedius euophrys), has offered another tune explaining the mysterious connection between successful performing duos. It’s a link of their minds, and it happens, in fact, as each singer mutes the brain of the other as they coordinate their duets.

Newark's 1st Precinct Building Reimagined by Community and Students

Theodore C. Landsmark Gives Address to Hillier College Class of 2021

Hillier College Professor Schuman Gets High Marks and Dual Honors
Hillier College Prof. Tony Schuman is being recognized again this year with the Van Houten Award for Teaching Excellence. Originally awarded last year, celebrations and the official award were postponed until this year. Schuman has also earned the 2021 designation of Master Teacher from the provost's office.

NJIT Experts Work with City and State on Regional Development
Prof. Darius Sollohub, who serves on the New Jersey Committee of the Regional Plan Association, and has advised the Newark NJ administrations of Cory Booker and Ras Baraka on airport, housing, parking, and rapid transit policies; and Dr. Colette Santasieri, who is Executive Director of the Center for Community Systems and a seasoned environmental planner, civil engineer, and social scientist, organized a gathering of regional agencies, infrastructure and planning experts to jointly develop plans for a Newark Airport City.

Hillier College Research Team on Community Based Design Programs
The recently formed Newark Design Collaborative (NDC) is engaging four students in a research project to study how other schools of architecture across the country have structured their community design engagement initiatives, from issues of scope and mission to practical details like funding and liability. Girls Who Code Alum DeMatos Completes NJIT Degree, Lands Job at Facebook
Just about everyone in college has a Facebook account, uses their Instagram service, or knows someone who does, but Ying Wu College of Computing new graduate Catarina DeMatos is going to work there. DeMatos, of Chatham, first interned at Facebook as a rising junior in summer 2019, so she had an inroad to becoming an employee upon graduation this month with a B.S. in computer science.

An Aspiring Technology Leader's Next Educational Stop is STEM Powerhouse ETH Zurich
Roberto Adamson, an aspiring technology leader who aims to create AI-driven convenience and efficiency for peoples’ homes and workplaces, will begin the next stage of his professional journey at one of the world’s preeminent STEM universities. Named the “Outstanding Senior” for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Adamson will move to Switzerland this fall to pursue a master’s degree in electrical engineering at ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zurich, where he will specialize in control systems and artificial intelligence.
