NJIT Receives Ellucian Impact Award for Digital Transformation
Ellucian, the leading higher education technology solutions provider, today announced that New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has won a 2021 Ellucian Impact Award. The university was honored for its successful digital transformation initiatives, which allowed it to pivot quickly to support students during the pandemic. NJIT will receive a $25,000 grant.

Student's Web Design Startup Helps Local Businesses in Pandemic
When the COVID-19 pandemic put an indefinite pause to how local bricks-and-mortar businesses serve their communities, an NJIT student and his friends stepped in to help small companies take the concept of shopping local online. Franklin Tan said his website development business, Tartan Technologies, formed in 2018 and became much busier as small businesses, many of which never even had a website, needed to quickly catch up to the times with online storefronts because regular customers could no longer shop in person.

Novel LEDs Would Simultaneously Illuminate and Disinfect a Room
Hieu Nguyen’s pandemic-inspired lighting would not only illuminate classrooms, offices and airport lobbies, but also disinfect them with invisible ultraviolet light that destroys pathogens such as the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. With three possible settings, his LED panels would emit visible light, ultraviolet light or both, irradiating air, water and surfaces in enclosed settings. Backed by a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation, he is exploring novel nanotechnology to generate light that would cut the energy consumption of these devices by half.

Applications to Ying Wu College of Computing Increased 50% Since 2019
Applications to study at Ying Wu College of Computing increased by 50% in the last two years. The college received 2,979 applicants this year which is also an increase of 19% from 2020. Computer science, human-computer interaction and web/information systems also experienced large increases as individual majors. There were 43% more applications requesting Albert Dorman Honors College status since 2019.

Highlanders Clinch Spot in America East Postseason Tournament
Sophomore Alejandro Rabell scored the lone goal of the match and goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys combined for the shutout in the Highlanders 1-0 win over visiting UMBC to clinch a spot in the America East Conference Tournament on Friday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Breathing in and out. It’s so simple we often forget we’re doing it, but birds have mastered an even more efficient trick that’s been long-shrouded in mystery — breathing so that the air in their lungs flows in one direction. A team of mathematicians and physicists now say they’ve come up with the explanation for how it’s possible.

Their expertise ranges from technologies to improve infrastructure in some of the most urbanized regions on the planet to some of the remotest. Philip Pong, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, focuses on advanced sensing devices to enhance visibility, or “eyes in the field,” that provide power systems the data they need to monitor conditions and make decisions.

Science Students Earn Intern, Co-op of the Year Honors at NJIT
The winners of this year's Interns and Co-ops of NJIT Contest stood out for how they embraced their initial responsibilities and earned advancements within their organizations, according to judges from Career Development Services. Chemistry major Jennifer Mikulko ’23 earned intern of the year for her work as a laboratory assistant in two departments of cosmetics manufacturer Cosmax USA, and biology major Colette Lichtenstein ’22 earned top student in a co-operative educational experience for her efforts as a medical scribe at two New Jersey hospitals amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

NJIT Takes Two from UML to Win First America East Series
The NJIT offense continued to stay hot and the squad got a pair of solid pitching performances en route to a doubleheader sweep vs. host UMass Lowell in America East Conference action on Saturday. The sweep, combined with Friday's doubleheader split, gave the Highlanders their first America East series victory in program history. NJIT (6-12, 5-7 AE) won the opener 7-3, before holding on to take game two 9-5 over the River Hawks (6-13, 5-5 AE). Game One

Regsan Watkins Hat Trick Powers Highlanders to a 3-2 America East Win at Stony Brook
NJIT senior Regsan Watkins' hat trick powered visiting NJIT to a 3-2 men's soccer America East Conference win at Stony Brook Friday afternoon at Lavalle Stadium. With the win, NJIT sits atop Pod C standings with a 3-2 league record, 3-4-1 overall while Stony Brook, eliminated from postseason contention, moves to 1-3-1 in the league, 1-5-1 overall.

NJIT is Prepared to Tackle Infrastructure Challenges
In NJIT’s Materials and Structures Laboratory, Noah Thibodeaux is concocting a series of concrete mixtures containing varying levels of old, pulverized roadway. The lab, which is working with the New York City Department of Transportation to determine the feasibility of using recycled aggregate in new projects, is focused on its near-term performance and durability over time, as well as its impact on the environment.

Equal Pay Day@NJIT: Leaders Offer 4 Tips on How Women Can Establish Themselves at Work
New Jersey Institute of Technology welcomed two strong leaders who shared key advice on how women can establish themselves at work. The leaders, Catherine Wilson, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Newark, and Judith Sheft, executive director of the New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology, led an online discussion during Equal Pay Day that was equal parts instructive, inspiring and frank.

NJIT Coding Team Advances for First Time, Divisional Round is April 22
A team of NJIT computer science students will compete among some of the nation's best undergraduate coders in the divisional level of the International Collegiate Programming Contest on April 22, where top finishers in the U.S. Eastern division go to the North American championships, en route to the ultimate prize at the World Finals in Moscow.

The NJIT men's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season and first-ever conference win with a 14-10 triumph over the UMass Lowell River Hawks Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.

NJIT a Top 100 Graduate School for Engineering, by US News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report has released its 2022 rankings for the nation’s top graduate schools, with NJIT ranked among the best for graduate degree programs in engineering. The university slots in this year at No. 88 — up 23 positions in the past seven years — and has been included on the distinguished list since 2003. The 2022 rankings mark the sixth consecutive year NJIT has appeared in the top 100.

Men's and Women's Fencing Places Fourth at 2021 NCAA Championships
The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams finished fourth at the 2021 NCAA Fencing Championships hosted by Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center. The fourth-place finish with 128 points marks the programs best finish. In 2015-16, NJIT finished in 10th place.

Applications to Hillier College Rise in Parallel With Notable Successes
Recently released data shows a substantial increase in the number of people applying to Hillier College of Architecture and Design since 2019, attributed largely by college officials to better marketing and communication efforts. The college saw 732 applicants in 2021, up 16% from 2020 and 39% from 2019, according to the NJIT admissions office.
