Ying Wu College of Computing Achieves Record Incoming Class and Enrollment for Fall 2021
Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) is proud to welcome a record-breaking number of new students at all levels of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral study for the fall 2021 semester. With 1,150 new students, YWCC achieved an 11% increase in its total enrollment, weighing in at 3,479 students - representing 31% of the total NJIT student body.
“It is not surprising that an increasing number of young people are attracted to the exciting and impactful field of computing. Software and information systems virtually shape the way people across the globe work and play on a daily basis, creating an ecosystem of data, information and knowledge that dwarfs anything that previously existed and will eventually be used in ways unimaginable today," YWCC Dean Craig Gotsman said.
"The COVID experience has taught us that computing is more important than ever before. Imagine what our life would have been like in the last 18 months without all the software and internet platforms that kept us connected and functioning with some semblance of normalcy,” Gotsman noted.
NJIT established YWCC in 2001 with the goal of making computing a centerpiece of its vision for the 21st century. This includes expanding cutting-edge research and degree programs, faculty and student innovation, and increasing partnerships with industry in areas ranging from networking and cybersecurity to data science, cloud computing, gaming and virtual reality.
YWCC currently boasts the largest computing program in the region. It is the most significant contributor to the technology talent pipeline in the tri-state area. It has recently expanded beyond Newark to a new graduate-level facility, NJIT@JerseyCity, providing educational opportunities for working professionals both within the industry and those wishing to explore new careers. The new location offers a diversity of graduate-level certificates and M.S. programs and is conveniently located across from the Exchange Place PATH station.
YWCC has great expectations for the incoming class and looks forward to preparing them to face the challenges of today - as tomorrow’s global technology leaders. As Dean Gotsman observes, “The world needs these skilled professionals now more than ever.”
