NJ Society for Information Management Awards YWCC Scholarships
Computer science undergraduates Alfred Simpson and Luis Velasquez each received $5,000 scholarships this spring from the New Jersey chapter of the Society for Information Management. The society is a professional organization for information technology executives. Scholarships are provided by the state chapter's charitable foundation.

JerseyCTF Competition Shatters Record for Highest Participation from Around the World
It was a global cyber attack of epic proportions — but only in the best way possible for the student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the NJIT Secure Computing Initiative. The second annual NJIT JerseyCTF competition attracted participants from around the world and exceeded the target goals — and expectations — of the organizers by more than doubling the previous year’s registrations.

Highlanders Fight Off Elimination With Late Rally in 2-1 Win vs. UMBC
Hours after falling into the losers bracket with a 20-5 loss to Binghamton, the NJIT baseball team pushed across a pair of late runs to rally past UMBC 2-1 in America East Playoff action at Mohaney Diamond on Thursday.

Franzoni's Walk-Off Hit Sends NJIT to Winner's Bracket Semifinals of 2022 AEBASE Championships
The 2022 NJIT Baseball team has relied on its veterans all season long and Wednesday was no different as a pair of standout pitching performances from a junior and a senior, and three late-inning runs were scored courtesy of three graduate student captains and the No. 3 Highlanders won via a walk-off to escape No. 6 Hartford at Mahaney Diamond.

NJIT's President Bloom Wins Chief Executive Leadership Award, NJBIZ ICON Award
New Jersey Institute of Technology President Joel S. Bloom has been selected as the recipient of two distinctions recognizing his leadership and success in guiding the 141-year-old institution. Bloom has won the 2022 Chief Executive Leadership Award by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II, and has earned distinction as an NJBIZ ICON.

Branko Kolarevic will be ending his three-year term as Dean of the Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) on June 30, 2022. With over 30 years of experience in academia he has taught architecture at universities in North America and Asia and has lectured worldwide on the use of digital technologies in architecture and design.

From Arts to Sports in Spring Studio Final Reviews
This spring semester’s studios investigated the value of architecture that is environmentally responsible, contextual, and functional. The final reviews presented projects that spanned from designing a public arts institution in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn in Carrie Gibbs’ studio, to a community recreation center located in Doha, Qatar in Kelly Hutzell and Chris Gardner’s studio.

Meet Hillier College Class of 2022 Distinguished Student Award Recipients
This year marked another milestone for the Hillier College of Architecture and Design with the graduation class of one hundred and twenty four students. Best of them were recognized for their excellence at the college awards ceremony held on May 13. On this occasion they shared their experiences and the most valuable lessons learned while studying at NJIT and Hillier College, and they told us about what is next for them as they enter the professional field.

Computing Grad Student Adapts Leading-Edge Tech for Drone and Robot Vision
If you can envision a future where robots need eyeglasses to accurately deliver packages and safely perform dangerous missions, then Craig Iaboni would be your local android optician. Until then, Iaboni is pursuing an M.S. in computer science at NJIT by coding new kinds of neural networks and using cutting-edge architectures to help electronic beings better see the world around them.

Class of 2022 Showed Grit and Perseverance!
As the spring semester came to a close, Hillier College graduating students closed one chapter in their lives. On May 13, 2022, after the University Convocation Ceremony, Hillier College of Architecture and Design hosted a Graduation Celebration with a cocktail reception and awards ceremony at the Weston Green. The graduates gathered together with family and friends for an outdoor celebration of their transition from academic to professional life.

Monica Weglarz Wins Best Early-Stage Startup Award at UPitch Competition
Recent NJIT alumna Monica Weglarz envisioned a company delivering fuel and mechanic services while you're at work, offered as an employee benefit, in turn earning her a $1,500 award for the best early-stage startup at the 2022 UPitch New Jersey business plan competition. Weglarz said the research that she conducted, and the prize she earned, will help as she becomes a law student. She's studying for the Law School Admission Test this summer while working as a paralegal and has entrepreneurial ambitions.

Eclectic NJIT Engineering Grad Will Andrews to Study International Development in Dublin
The bachelor’s that Donald “Will” Andrews earned at New Jersey Institute of Technology is in industrial engineering, but his heart is in international development. The 2022 graduate’s interest in global issues traces back to high school, when he participated in the Model United Nations, and accelerated after his second year at NJIT, when he tackled a Humanity in Action Fellowship that examined democracy and pluralism in modern Germany in the context of the Holocaust.

Senior Success: Published Researcher Marcos Molina to Pursue PhD at Princeton
Marcos Molina, a chemical engineer with a penchant for complicated algorithms, made a tough call when deciding among Ph.D. programs at several graduate Ivy League institutions. In the end, he chose to pursue theoretical and computational research at Princeton.

NJIT Hosts Big Data Alliance Symposium with Focus on Education
NJIT hosted the ninth New Jersey Big Data Alliance Symposium, bringing together nearly 200 experts from academia, government and industry to share ideas about the present state and future trends of their field. Attendees represented a gamut of careers, not just programmers, which the panelists said indicates that the importance of artificial intelligence, data science and machine learning applies to nearly all aspects of life in the 21st century. Many students were also present.

2022 Hashimoto Prize Winner - Shihab Hafiz
Shihab Bin Hafiz was born in Bogura, Bangladesh. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) in July 2014. He completed his Master of Science in Nanoengineering at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in May 2017. He started his doctoral study at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in September 2017, where he joined Nanoelectronic Materials and Devices lab for his doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Dong-Kyun Ko.
