NJIT Community Members, Today, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday that honors the Reverend Dr. King for his immense contributions to the advancement of civil rights and equality in our country. This is a day when each of us should take time to reflect upon our history, our present, and the significant work that remains to be done to advance equality for all.

Spring Semester Address
Last week, we began the spring semester using remote learning and operations wherever possible in order to mitigate the post-holiday spread of COVID on our campus. Next week, we will return to in-person classes and operations throughout our university, so I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all back to NJIT for the spring. In doing so, I also would like to recap some recent news and noteworthy accomplishments while highlighting a few upcoming milestones.

New Research Shows How 2D Layouts Can Be Popped Up into 3D Structures
Imagine designing an inexpensive, flat and strong structure that bends perfectly into Spaceship Earth from Disney's EPCOT theme park. NJIT's Przemyslaw Musialski, associate professor of computer science, believes his latest research is a step in the right direction, sitting at the intersection of architecture, computing and geometry.

Chemical Engineering Solves Problems with Computer Simulation
Gennady Gor is becoming a go-to expert at combining the power of chemistry and computers to protect our bodies. Gor's specialty is molecular simulation of fluids and their interactions with porous materials. "I am interested in coupling between surface chemistry and mechanics. This is the main focus of my NSF Career Award from 2020," he explained.

NSF Appoints NJIT's Wenda Cao to Its Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has appointed Wenda Cao, physics professor and director of the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) of NJIT’s Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR), to its Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee (AAAC). The AAAC is comprised of 13 distinguished astronomers from U.S. universities tasked with advising the NSF, NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy on emerging issues within the fields of astronomy and astrophysics.

NJIT Sweeps Season Series from LIU
The NJIT men's volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match, sweeping the season series from LIU, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in men's volleyball action inside Stratis Arena on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson. NJIT, winners of four straight, improved to 4-2 on the season while LIU moved to 3-7. The Highlanders swept the Sharks 25-17, 25-22 and 25-22.

Miles Coleman's Late Three-Pointer Pushes NJIT Past Stony Brook
Miles Coleman's three-pointer with 2.0 seconds remaining broke a 62-62 tie and lifted the NJIT men's basketball team to a 65-62 victory over preseason America East favorite Stony Brook on Saturday evening at the Wellness and Events Center. "That felt great, but then I looked at the clock and realized there was still time left," explained Coleman, who finished with a team-high tying 16 points.

EOP Programs Cultivate Diversity and Success at NJIT
A massive banner is plastered onto the bridge above the Campus Center for all to see: “#1 Nationally for Student Upward Economic Mobility.” It’s true. NJIT has one of the highest percentages of students from the bottom fifth of the income distribution who end up in the top fifth. No programs are more responsible for this accolade than the Office of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and the NJIT chapter of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME).

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has reaffirmed its status among the nation’s most elite and productive research institutions by once again achieving an R1 status — the highest designation — by the Carnegie Classification.

Eliza Michalopoulou, mathematics professor and chair of NJIT’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, has been named Distinguished Lecturer by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) — a premier professional organization dedicated to advancing engineering and technology in marine environments.

Women's Tennis Tops Rutgers For Signature Victory
The NJIT women's tennis team rallied from losing its doubles point to defeat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The victory was the Highlanders' first-ever over Rutgers (0-4 prior since 2015) and the program's first-ever win over a Power 5 school (ACC, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12, SEC) since joining Division I in 2006-07.

NJIT Comes from Behind to Upset No. 12 UC San Diego to Stay Perfect at Home
The NJIT men's volleyball team came from behind and outlasted No. 12 UC San Diego in five sets behind three Highlanders recording double-digit kills paced by Jens Feldthus, who recorded a career-best 18, upsetting the visiting Tritons at home, 3-2, Friday evening inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
