NSF Hub, With NJIT as Member, Now Taking Applications to Commercialize Research
Aiming to propel discoveries made in university labs into everyday life, the new I-Corps Northeast Hub launched this week following its announcement last summer, as applications are now open for its first researcher training program. The 4-week program, in which researchers confront the challenges of creating successful startups and entrepreneurial ventures based on scientific and technological discoveries, kicks off Feb. 28 and runs through March 23 online.

Coleman's Big Second Half Helps NJIT Hold Off Maine in America East Opener
Miles Coleman scored 15 points after halftime on Sunday to help the NJIT men's basketball team come from behind to defeat Maine in both team's America East Conference openers at the Wellness and Events Center. Coleman finished with a game-high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season as NJIT improved to 6-5 overall. The senior forward was one of five Highlanders to score at least nine points in the victory over Maine (3-9).

NJIT Closes Out 2021 with Win, Holds Off Defending America East Champion Stony Brook
The NJIT women's basketball team closed out 2021 with a win, holding off defending America East Champions Stony Brook, en route to a 54-49 home victory to open league action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center Thursday afternoon. NJIT, which knocked off Stony Brook, who was ranked No. 7 in the latest CollegeInside.com Mid Major Top 25 poll, recorded its sixth win of the season (the most wins since the 2018-19 season).

New Jersey Institute of Technology Names Dr. Teik C. Lim as University's Ninth President
The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Teik C. Lim as NJIT’s ninth president following a national search and a unanimous vote of the Board on January 5, 2022. President-elect Lim, who also will be appointed as a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, will begin his NJIT tenure on July 1, 2022.

Hispanic and Latinx Leadership Council Kicks Off Its On-Campus Event Series
The Hispanic and Latinx Leadership Council at NJIT hosted its first event on campus encouraging students to network with invited guest speakers and industry professionals, campus support groups, faculty, staff and — importantly — each other. The monthly meeting series, Café y Conexiones, or coffee and connections, featured Provost and Executive Vice President Fadi P. Deek, as well as HLLC members Angelica Ogando and Francisco Cortes.

Use of Twitter Helped Taliban Regain Control in Afghanistan, Researchers Find
Twitter was a strategic tool for Taliban operations in overthrowing the Afghanistan leadership during the country’s civil war, and some accounts associated with the oppressive group triggered the company's algorithms to promote ads for well-known Western brands, researchers from New Jersey Institute of Technology, Princeton University and University of Regina found.

NJIT Tops List of Safest College Campuses
NJIT was again recognized as one of the safest places to study. The college topped the list of safest schools in New Jersey, according to the 2021 Safest College Campuses in America ranking by Yourlocalsecurity.com. The ranking was compiled using the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security Survey and the FBI Uniform Crime Report.

Men's Volleyball Selected Second in 2022 EIVA Preseason Coaches Poll
NJIT has been selected second in the 2022 Preseason Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Coaches' Poll, according to the conference coaches the league office announced on Tuesday. NJIT, which was picked second for the second consecutive season, is led by 2021 Bob Sweeney EIVA Coach of the Year Danny Goncalves. Last season, NJIT combined for 13 wins, the most for NJIT since 2017.

Algorithms Expert is First Woman at NJIT to Become IEEE Fellow
Guiling (Grace) Wang, professor and associate dean for research in Ying Wu College of Computing, was recently named an IEEE Fellow, one of the electronic technology industry's highest honors. She is the first woman to earn the honor among several male recipients at NJIT and only the second current honoree in the computing college. Most recipients are based in Newark College of Engineering, given the IEEE's focus on electrical engineering.

Catalyzing Urban Master Planning with Creative Capital
Prof. Darius Sollohub and his students have been researching and developing proposals for the improvements to the Newark Penn Station transportation hub and environs this semester. Their studio has been designing in anticipation of a $190 million investment by New Jersey Transit in these improvements. The studio has been encouraged by the design team of WSP | FX Collaborative (FXC) who have attended reviews, provided input, and supported 3D printing.

NJIT Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Shawn Chester won the coveted Thomas J.R. Hughes Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), which recognizes special achievement in applied mechanics for researchers under the age of 41.

Data Science Professor Helps Uncover Cosmic Mysteries of Nuclear Physics
An NJIT business school professor is teaching graduate students how to apply data science to unique fields, starting with cutting-edge problems in nuclear physics. Dantong Yu, associate professor of business data science, is co-principal investigator for a $250,000 grant derived from a federal $5.7 million project applying data science to understand what happens when particles collide at high velocity.

NJIT President Recognized for Support of Black Businesses
New Jersey Institute of Technology’s efforts to nurture and support businesses led by African-Americans are being recognized by a caucus of county commissioners. The caucus, New Jersey Nineteen (NJ19), comprised of Black county commissioners, bestowed an African-American Business Champion Award to Joel S. Bloom, NJIT’s president since 2011. Central to the university’s support for Black businesses is VentureLink, the business incubator housed under its New Jersey Innovation Institute.
