NJIT Taps Workforce Training Pioneer to Close Salesforce Talent Gap
Partnership with SkillStorm will expand access to industry-recognized certification amid growing demand for Salesforce skills New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) today announced a new initiative designed to support students, alumni, and professionals looking to advance their careers in the tech industry. In partnership with SkillStorm, the tech talent accelerator whose popular platform is used by a growing number of universities across the country, NJIT will provide access to training courses that will lead to an industry-recognized certification in Salesforce.

NJIT Has Strongest-Ever Representation at Annual SIGGRAPH Conference
The School of Art + Design at the Hillier College had the largest contingent of NJIT students and faculty to attend and participate in SIGGRAPH 2022, the 49th annual conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques. The international conference returned in a hybrid mode with both remote and in-person events as more than 10,600 individuals gathered in Vancouver August 6-12. With 15 student volunteers in Vancouver, the NJIT contingent represented almost 10% of the onsite cohort.

Ph.D. Student's Research Can Reduce Wind Turbine Costs by $15M Annually
NJIT student Akhyurna Swain has a plan to save $15 million per year in the maintenance and operational costs of New Jersey's offshore wind turbines. Swain, studying for her Ph.D. in electrical engineering, determined that non-intrusive monitoring technology controlled by magnets can be paired with machine learning software to realize the impressive cost savings for an 1,100-megawatt project which will begin construction in 2024.

NJIT Featured in The Princeton Review's 'Best 388 Colleges' Guide for 2023
At NJIT, students are “learning on an Ivy League level,” getting “practical career-focused education” at “a fairly affordable price.” - The Princeton Review New Jersey Institute of Technology has again been named a top college according to The Princeton Review in its 31st edition of its college guide, "The Best 388 Colleges," a designation earned by only about 14% of America’s four-year colleges.

Student Photo Exhibit at HCAD Showcases Wide Array of Photography
Located in the Mostoller Reading Room at the Hillier College of Architecture and Design’s Litman Library, the exhibit of People, Places, Food and Flowers Making Photographs 2022 can be viewed. It’s scheduled to run through September. The exhibit is a collection of student photography that’s split into six categories: food, architecture, animals, flowers, products and people. This exhibit was the result of a spring class professor Glenn Goldman taught, AD 340 Photography and Imaging.

Men's Soccer Welcomes 13 Recruits as Part of 2022 Incoming Class
Seventh-year head coach Fernando Barboto announced that 13 players will be joining the NJIT men's soccer program as part of the 2022 incoming class. The incoming class will be joining a Highlander squad that advanced to the America East Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinals in back-to-back seasons. Computing Alumna from Vietnam, Now at Google, Credits Perseverance
NJIT computer science alumna Hang Nguyen, the first in her family to attend college, started her full-time career as a Google software engineer based on her ability to quickly absorb new skills. Nguyen grew up in central Vietnam, learned English and the outdated Pascal programming language in a school for gifted children, and ultimately chose to pursue her dream of not only obtaining a college degree but doing so in the United States.

After concluding their eight-week summer program, NJIT students presented their startups, giving them an opportunity to experience entrepreneurship and business creation. The Highlander Foundry program is a summer startup incubator that helps NJIT students and alumni grow with the same techniques and strategies that launched many of the top startups today.

Akhyurna Swain - ECE PhD Student of the Month - August 2022
Akhyurna Swain is a Ph.D. student in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Currently, she works in the Sensor Research laboratory under the advisory of Dr. Philip Pong. Her research area focuses on the development and deployment of wireless sensor networks and smart sensors for online health monitoring, fault detection, and predictive maintenance of the power system.

Computing Student Makes Fake Tweets Detector, Satire Checker is Next
We've all wished that some people on social media would use a fake news detector before sharing, and now an NJIT computer science student has built one that works pretty well. Natalia Smith, a junior from Newark, said her fake news detector application has performed with up to 90 percent accuracy in evaluating COVID-related tweets for truthfulness.

NJIT Police Department Pledges to Advance Women in Policing
On August 3, 2022, the NJIT Police Department signed on to the 30x30 Pledge – a series of low- and no-cost actions policing agencies can take to improve the representation and experiences of women in law enforcement. The activities help policing agencies assess the current state of a department with regard to gender equity, identify factors that may be driving any disparities and develop and implement strategies and solutions to eliminate barriers and advance women in policing.

As CEO of Construction Management Firm, NJIT Alum Finds Strength in Diversity
When it comes to diversity, Ken Colao leads by example. More than a third of the 90 staffers — 38% — at his construction management company, CNY Group, is Black, Indigenous or other people of color (BIPOC). Also, in an industry not known for gender balance, women comprise nearly a third of the staff and have earned 62% of the promotions in the past three years.

Women's Basketball Gives Back to the Community
The NJIT women's basketball team took time from its summer workout schedule to give back to the community teaming up with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) in Hillside, NJ. Members of the women's basketball team and coaching staff offered their assistance inside the CFBNJ warehouse preparing meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for those in need.

NJIT Police Lead 4th Annual Navy Seal Hudson River Swim
A cadre of NJIT police officers led hundreds of Navy SEALs, fellow veterans and military supporters in the pre-swim run from Liberty State Park Sept. 11 Monument to the Hudson. The attendees then swam across the Hudson and ran to their final stop at the Sept. 11 memorial in lower Manhattan as part of the charitable event.

Smart Microrobots Learn How to Swim and Navigate with Artificial Intelligence
Researchers from Santa Clara University, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Hong Kong have been able to successfully teach microrobots how to swim via deep reinforcement learning, marking a substantial leap in the progression of microswimming capability.
