Women's Soccer Stays Unbeaten With 2-2 Draw Against St. John's

The NJIT women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season after the Highlanders played Big East opponent St. John's to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

THE RUNDOWN

  • NJIT picked up a pair of assisted goals to aid its result on Sunday - a breakaway goal from freshman Kelsey Ramos off a lofted long ball from senior Ariana Caminos and a corner kick header by Caminos off sophomore Aleesha Deshmukh's service.
  • Ramos' goal (22') came just over a minute after St. John's took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Jessica Garziano.
  • NJIT came out in the second half and took the lead in the 64th minute on the Deshmukh-Caminos connection. NJIT forced a corner after a preceding throw-in and Deshmukh perfectly placed the ball over the defense, toward the far post, and onto the head of Caminos.
  • St. John's would respond in the 78th minute, scoring the game-tying goal.
  • Given the new rules governing overtime in the regular season, the game ended in a draw after 90 minutes and left both teams with a hard-fought point.

EXTRA TIME

  • Even with their disparity in games played, Ramos (2) and Caminos (46) both scored their first career goals on Sunday. Caminos' assist was also a career first for the senior.
  • The Highlanders' program record shutout streak ended after St. John's opening goal, officially coming to a close at 605:32 of game time and spanning through seven contests dating back to last season. Their seven-match unbeaten streak remains intact, however (4-0-3 in the program's last seven games).
  • Redshirt senior Molly Saylor played all 90 minutes and made six stops on Sunday.
  • In a sign of a much more democratic offense, NJIT has now scored multiple goals in back-to-back games after only scoring twice or more one time in 19 contests last season. 
  • For NJIT, earning a result against a St. John's team that advanced to the Sweet 16 last season was a major step in the program's growth.

NJIT will begin its season-long three-match road trip on Thursday, Aug. 25 against county rival Seton Hall. Kickoff in South Orange is scheduled for 4 p.m.
