8 Most Commonly Forgotten Essentials for Back to Campus

Published: Monday, August 22, 2022

Ever felt like you're forgetting something? Moving into the dorms can be a bit of a whirlwind. In all the excitement, it's easy to forget some everyday essentials.

We've compiled a list of the most commonly forgotten essentials to ensure you're ready for your move to #HighlanderNation!

1. Bedding and Pillows

Good bedding can make all the difference in comfort for your new home away from home. To make life a little easier, make sure you are picking easy colors to keep looking fresh and can be washed with your other clothing without getting dingey.

2. Ear Plugs

Ensuring you can have quiet when sharing your space with another person is a MUST! Earplugs can make all the difference when you're trying to study or just need a little peace and quiet.

3. Dinnerware

Whether you want to put together simple meals in your dorm or share takeout with friends, you'll definitely want to have dinnerware and utensils. Although it is tempting to buy ceramic or glass items, plastic will make dorm living much simpler!

4. Toilet Paper

This might seem obvious, but it should be no surprise that this is the #1 most forgotten item!

5. Toolkit

The last thing you may expect to do when living in the dorms is fix anything. Still, minor fixes are a reality of independent living. You'll be happy you have a tool kit handy!

6. Small Medical Kit

With all the fun you'll be having on campus, it is helpful to have a well-stocked first aid kit! A personal supply of over-the-counter medicine and first aid materials can come in handy.

7. Trashcan

Another item that seems obvious but is a very commonly forgotten essential! Having your own garbage bin can make all the difference in the world regarding convenience and shared living.

8. Surge Protector with Long Cord

Surge protectors are allowed in the dormitories here at NJIT. They provide you with a few more outlets for your technology needs! Although surge protectors are permitted, it is important to note that NJIT doesn't allow extension cords or multi-plug outlets.

...and last, but certainly not least, make sure you bring anything that gives your room a touch of you - after all, this is the spot you'll be living for the next year. Make sure it's comfortable and welcoming!
