Sara Ghasvarianjahromi - ECE PhD Student of the Month - April 2022
Sara Ghasvarianjahromi is a Ph.D. student in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT. She is working as a member of the Center for Wireless Information Processing (CWiP) under the supervision of Professor Joerg Kliewer. Her research focuses on Authentication and Federated learning.

Fischer Improves to 5-0 in America East Starts as NJIT Cruises to 8-2 Win Over UMBC
Ryan Fischer took the mound for the fifth time in America East Conference action this spring and improved to 5-0 in those starts as the NJIT baseball team cruised to a 8-2 victory over visiting UMBC at Jim Hynes Stadium. The Highlanders (15-13, 9-4 AE) scored the first five runs of the game and relied on their ace to defeat UMBC (14-19, 5-8 AE) for the ninth-consecutive time.

NJIT Hosts 'Rock the Vote' Event in Wellness and Events Center
City officials and community leaders hosted a “Rock the Vote” event at NJIT’s Wellness and Events Center, complete with a DJ, dance competition, artists, rappers and — most importantly — voter registration forms. Droves of students from the Newark area were able to take an afternoon off from their normal coursework and register to vote with the upcoming Newark municipal elections being held May 10, 2022, with a deadline to register April 19.

Design Showcase Celebrates Work of Students, Alumni in Hillier's Biggest Event of the Year
Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) transformed its gallery and packed its lecture hall for the college’s highly-anticipated signature event that celebrated student and alumni work, and hosted a presentation and Q&A by architect Andrew Whalley, chairman of Grimshaw. The Showcase gives HCAD students an opportunity to network with alumni and industry professionals who represent architectural firms, government agencies, builders, real estate developers, entrepreneurs and designers.

For Jennifer and Dominic, Scholarships Opened the Door to Science and Engineering at NJIT
Scholarships enabled Jennifer Cabral and Dominic Bosi to overcome financial hurdles and study science and engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Cabral and Bosi are both first-generation students from working-class families. As such, they needed help to afford college. Generous donors supplied that, and once enrolled, they found their callings and are pursuing them with passion.

Track and Field Ends Metropolitan Outdoors With Seven More Medals
The NJIT track and field teams traveled back to Icahn Stadium in full force on Saturday for the final day of the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships.The two-day meet ended with the Highlander women taking seventh place overall (40 pts) and the Highlander men placing eighth (45 points). GirlHacks Participants Build Apps for Wellness and the Environment
GirlHacks, an annual event produced by NJIT's Women In Computing Society, partially returned to campus this spring and continued emphasizing its openness to minorities rather than only females. The event, in which most entrants develop mobile applications, was last held virtually in October 2020 when COVID was a major theme.

Computing College Helps Non-Profit Build Public Data Access Tools
DataSourceNJ, as a startup and non-profit organization aiming to democratize access to local public data, is turning to NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing for technical expertise in data access, organization, analysis and visualization. The organization is led by entrepreneur Michael Goldstein, data analyst Greg Frank and veteran journalist Rod Hicks, who believe that clever software can give small newsrooms and the general public access to information previously limited to corporations, national-level media and people with deep pockets.

NJIT's Vector Captures Numerous Awards at College Media Contests
NJIT’s student newspaper, The Vector, continues making its journalistic voice heard — the paper is the recipient of several awards from U.S. college media contests recently. The Vector was named the Corbin Gwaltney Award winner for “Best All-Around Student Newspaper” (among large universities) at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 1 Mark of Excellence Awards, beating out competition from the likes of Hofstra University and Boston College.

NJIT Names Academic Learning Studio in Honor of Kalafer Family
Steve Kalafer was a tireless advocate and ambassador for NJIT, and as a member of the Board of Overseers and a longtime benefactor of the university, he generously shared both his time and resources. To honor his commitment to NJIT, the university has recommissioned the athletic department’s academic help center as the Kalafer Family Academic Learning Studio.

New NJIT-Led Center Wins Pharma Backing to Improve Drug Design, Shorten Development Times
Swallowing a pill is simple. Developing one the body will absorb into the bloodstream and deliver to the precise location, at the right concentration and in the optimal sequence is complex. The vast majority of pills are composed of powders, materials with properties of both solids and liquids, and they are tricky to design and manufacture because of their sometimes unpredictable behaviors.

Highlanders Split Doubleheader to Clinch Third-Straight America East Series
The NJIT baseball team split a doubleheader with UMass Lowell on Saturday, dropping game one 12-1, before coming back to win game two 7-5 to clinch the three-game America East series at Jim Hynes Stadium. The Highlanders (12-11) have now won all three America East series this season and sit tied for first place in the conference with a 7-2 league record. Two in a Row, NJIT Dominant in 3-0 Home Sweep vs. Harvard
The NJIT men's volleyball team won its second straight 3-0 EIVA Conference men's volleyball sweep Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Harvard inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. With the win, NJIT moves to 13-8 overall, 8-4 in the EIVA. The 13 wins for NJIT matches last seasons win-out while the eight wins sits the Highlanders in second in the league.

The conference featured speakers, panel discussions and Q&As regarding challenges and opportunities in the modern workplace and ways to provide benefits for first-generation college students.

The Hylander Requiem Motors for Glory Before a Hometown Crowd
The Hylander Requiem, a technology-filled cart atop mini monster wheels that is powered by self-generated hydrogen, will attempt to motor to victory this weekend at the regional round of the annual Chem-E-Car Competition. This year, Highlander Nation will be cheering loudly – and collectively – as the NJIT roadster competes against 14 other teams, including Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania, on the NJIT campus, the host of the 2022 American Institute of Chemical Engineers mid-Atlantic Student Conference.

Revitalized Data Science Club Eyes Insightful Statistics for NJIT Athletics
Sports provide an everyman's opportunity to explain statistical analysis, and the rejuvenated NJIT Data Science Club is all-in. The club already has more than a dozen members and is led by action-hungry graduate students Jake Byford and Parth Patel, president and vice president respectively, who both stepped up when most members of the previous Machine Learning Club graduated last year.

Keurig Founding Engineer, Class of '82, Meets Honors College Students
Dick Sweeney, the Highlander alumnus and engineer who made Keurig coffee machines feasible, visited NJIT's Albert Dorman Honors College last week for his first meet-and-greet with students since the COVID pandemic. Sweeney graduated with an industrial management degree in 1982 after several years of taking night classes and attributed his success to persistence, good luck and constantly hiring smart people. He is chair emeritus of the Honors College Board of Visitors.

Two NJIT Undergraduate Researchers Awarded Goldwater Scholarships
From an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, two NJIT students — Simone Bishara and Vishva Rana, both Albert Dorman Honors College scholars — have been named Goldwater Scholars this year by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The scholarship is recognized as among the country’s most prestigious for STEM undergraduates pursuing research careers.
