The group discussed climate change initiatives and outlooks, which included topics such as nuclear energy, how people can think globally and act locally, how battery research and improvements affect waste and finite resource usage.
Leading up to the panel, Bloomberg Businessweek talked with several environmental, entrepreneurial and engineering experts.
- Headlining the pre-panel program was NJIT President Teik C. Lim, who discussed the university’s entrepreneurship, diversity and industry engagement efforts needed to succeed and make an impact.
- Michel Boufadel, distinguished professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NJIT, talked about helping communities better prepare for and respond to environmental disasters and pandemics, and future energy opportunities.
- Colette Santasieri, executive director of the NJ Brownfields Assistance Center at NJIT, explained how they are assisting communities to clean up polluted sites for redevelopment. There are an estimated 10,000 brownfield sites in New Jersey alone.
- Kim Vierheilig, president of Buildings and Facilities Division at STV Engineering, discussed designing and engineering sustainable solutions for K-12 schools. Vierheilig holds dual degrees in architecture and business from NJIT, and sits on the advisory board of NJIT’s Hillier College of Architecture and Design.
