Forest Resilience Linked with Higher Mortality Risk in Western U.S., Study Finds
A forest’s resilience, or ability to absorb environmental disturbances, has long been thought to be a boost for its odds of survival against the looming threat of climate change. But a new study suggests that for some Western U.S. forests, it’s quite the opposite. In the journal Global Change Biology, researchers have published one of the first large-scale studies of U.S. forest land exploring the link between forest resilience and mortality.

Architecture Alumna Melissa Nieves Wins AIA Service Award, Shares Her Journey
New Jersey Institute of Technology alumna Melissa Nieves ’19 is the recipient of the American Institute of Architects New Jersey 2022 Service Award. Nieves, associate architect for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, earned her master’s in architecture with a concentration in infrastructure planning. “Melissa has had the pleasure of becoming a leader and mentor inside and outside her workplace. She embodies what it means to be an advocate and representative for diversity and mentorship within the profession,” said the AIA.

NJIT Hosts Symposium on Boosting Safety Culture Into Undergraduate Education
NJIT and the National Academy of Construction (NAC), with the support from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine hosted a symposium to bring together members from the industry, government and academia to collectively work together to help students become much more productive when they enter the workforce and understand the concept of safety in their professions.

Business Model Competition Addresses Societal Impact, Fiscal Prudence
Student entrepreneurs at NJIT's annual New Business Model Competition had one word for the experienced judges this week: plastics. It's the opposite of the revered 1967 film The Graduate, where a young Dustin Hoffman receives that single word of career advice from an accomplished friend of his parents. But it holds true, as plastics technology was a common theme to the student winners, all born decades after the movie debuted.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has received a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Authority (USEDA) to support the transformation of an underserved area into an economic development hub based around Newark Liberty International Airport.

Littman Library Book Talk: The Only Woman by Immy Humes (and The Only Woman of NJIT)
Immy Humes, Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker and first-time author, presented her book The Only Woman at the Littman Library on November 9th. The Only Woman is a collection of 100 historical photos collected by Humes showing group portraits of workers, politicians, artists, scientist, musicians… Each photo features men and only one woman among them.

NJIT Overseer Paul Profeta Ranks Highly in Real Estate 'Power 50'
Paul V. Profeta, founder of the Roseland-based real estate investment company and namesake of NJIT’s Paul Profeta Real Estate Technology, Design and Innovation Center, placed in the No. 3 spot in NJBIZ’s Commercial Real Estate Power 50 rankings. In its annual list, NJBIZ characterizes Profeta as a “heavy hitter … where his insights on business, commercial real estate and economic development also ensure greater economic opportunity for residents.”

An NJIT Water Treatment Specialist Wins an Edison Patent Award
In daily battles with pathogens, legacy chemicals from long disappeared factories and a growing array of micropollutants, water treatment systems are often handicapped by clogged membrane filters. Replacing them regularly is both laborious and expensive.

NJIT's Rima Taher Works with Habitat for Humanity to Save a Veterans Memorial Hall in Passaic, NJ
Rima Taher, Senior University Lecturer at the Hillier College of Architecture & Design at NJIT, is working with Habitat for Humanity on a project in Passaic, NJ to rebuild Albert Lawson Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, which was deemed unsafe and forced to close in December of 2019.

The Center for Community Systems at NJIT Helps to Build More Resilient Local Communities
The Center for Community Systems has received FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) funding through a subgrant from the NJ Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM), to create the Technical Assistance for Resiliency Program. NJIT TARP supports NJ’s vulnerable communities through capability- and capacity-building in dealing with the negative impacts of climate change.

New Jersey Institute of Technology is now ranked No. 9 in the country for its department of electrical and computer engineering, according to a U.S. News & World Report study of 2,165 universities worldwide.

For Fourth Straight Year, NJIT Professor Makes Global List of Highly Cited Researchers
A research paper on metal carbides and nitrides is paying dividends for NJIT’s Meng-Qiang Zhao — eight years after it was published. For the fourth straight year, Zhao, an assistant professor of chemical and materials engineering at NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering, has made Clarivate’s list of Highly Cited Researchers. Why? Chiefly because peers continue to cite the paper, which introduced a faster and safer way to synthesize MXenes, a family of novel 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides, according to Zhao.

Two NJIT Students Are Among this Year's 128 Governor's STEM Scholars
NJIT students Aliya Laliwala and Mrunmayi Joshi have been selected to be part of this year’s Governor’s STEM Scholars class, which includes 128 scholars from 20 New Jersey counties — the program’s largest cohort ever. The Governor’s STEM Scholars program was created to engage the next generation of research and innovation leaders in the state’s vast STEM economy early. Sixty-four percent of the class identify as female and 83% as students of color. When they graduate in May 2023, they will join an alumni cohort of over 700 Scholars.

The America East announced its postseason women's volleyball awards on Thursday and for the third straight season, NJIT was represented on the All-Rookie Team. Freshman libero Doga Emil was one of seven student-athletes to be named to the All-Rookie Team.

Kenna Squier and Trinity Williams registered double-doubles as five Highlanders scored in double figures in NJIT's 71-65 overtime victory over visiting Central Connecticut State Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.

Turing Laureate, Compiler Pioneer Jeffrey Ullman Visits NJIT for Data Science Lecture
When a Turing Award winner speaks, NJIT faculty and students listen. Jeffrey Ullman, known as a father of the modern compiler at Bell Labs and Princeton University in the 1960-1970s, filled the largest lecture hall in NJIT's Guttenberg Information Technologies Center for his October 14 lecture on data science, as part of the Ying Wu College of Computing’s distinguished speaker series.

Haylee Merola, 4th year interior design student at NJIT, is the undergraduate winner of the 2022 NEWH (Network of Executive Women in Hospitality) Green Voice Design Competition.
