Track and Field Adds Three More Medals To Close Out America East Outdoors
The NJIT track and field teams finished their second America East Outdoor Championships meet on Sunday afternoon on the campus of the University of Vermont. Both teams improved their scoring from their 2021 debut, with the men's team totaling 39 points (8th place; 31 in 2021) and the women's team tallying 23 points (9th place; 10.5 in 2021). NJIT Achieves Record Number of Students Earning Global Scholarships and Fellowships
At New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), students always have had the option to apply for prestigious fellowships and awards, but the university has taken things to a new level over the last two years with 23 recipients of Fulbright, Goldwater, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Boren, Gilman, and other nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships. This year alone, 15 NJIT students have received these awards, putting NJIT on par with some of the most prestigious universities in the nation.

Senior Success: Computer Engineer Suraj Ghumwala Joins U.S. Space Force
Suraj Ghumwala will soon be the first cadet from NJIT's ROTC detachment commissioned into the U.S. Space Force. The computer engineering major from Rochelle Park said his childhood dream was to be an astronaut, and as the first person in his family born in the U.S. he felt a sense of service to the community, influenced by friends who also joined the military.

3 Years In, Math Initiative Creates a Path from Newark High Schools to NJIT
Three years in, NJIT’s Math Success Initiative continues to grow in participation and results. Designed to prime Newark high school students for college, the summer-to-spring program attracted 29 students in 2021-22, up 26% from 2019-20, according to Levelle Burr-Alexander, director of special projects at NJIT’s Center for Pre-College Programs, which co-administers MSI with the university’s College of Science and Liberal Arts. And within the current cohort, all but one of the participants earned acceptance into NJIT.

Senior Success: Sreya Das Heading to JPMorgan for Cybersecurity
Sreya Das, graduating this spring with a bachelor's in computer science and is headed for the cybersecurity team at financial giant JPMorgan Chase, credits much of her success to involvement with activities outside the classroom. Das joined so many NJIT student organizations and academic commitments that she practically lost count. "The number of activities she is successfully involved in is mind boggling. I call her superwoman," Ying Wu College of Computing Professor James Geller said.

Creating a More Sustainable NJIT: Biodiversity + Alternative Energy + Carbon Neutrality
In class, on campus grounds and in Newark, students at NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College are working toward creating a greener, more sustainable urban environment in keeping with the university’s broader push toward sustainability. The students are acting locally even while they think globally about benefits of biodiversity and hazards of climate change. Their efforts include everything from planting trees and shrubs on campus and clearing debris from nearby Branch Brook Park to reimagining the garden atop the Campus Center.

Hillier College Students Receive a Medal at the 2022 Dana Knox Research Showcase
Just ahead of the Earth Day, two Hillier College of Architecture and Design students Jeongseo Lee, Ph.D. student in Urban Systems, and Elizabeth Kowalchuk, Undergraduate Senior in Architecture, received one of the 2022 Dana Knox Research Showcase medals for “An Evaluation Framework for a Net-Zero Energy Building’s Energy and IEQ Performance.” Lee and Kowalchuk won competition’s second place for graduate research.

New Jersey Institute of Technology is ranked No. 96 among institutions globally in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings that recognize institutions working to address global issues highlighted by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). NJIT’s rise in this ranking, from 201-300 last year to top 100 this year, reflects the university’s commitment to leveraging its STEM focus in support of sustainability.
