NJIT Students Take On Housing Crisis with Deployable Shelter Prototype
The “Place of Dwelling” (POD) was born out of the efforts of 15 architecture students and adjunct professors Erin Pellegrino and Charlie Firestone. It was presented to the public on the Hillier College Green on Monday, December 6th.

NJIT Concludes Non-Conference Action with 59-53 Win at St. Francis Brooklyn
Freshman Reese Vaughan broke a 53-53 tie on a three-pointer with 1:13 left to go in the game and visiting NJIT held on for a 59-53 road victory at St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday afternoon to wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule at Daniel Lynch'38 Gymnasium.

City of Newark and NJIT Selected Finalists for $1 Billion Build Back Better Regional Challenge
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo has announced that a regional coalition led by the City of Newark and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is among 60 projects selected as finalists for up to $100 million in funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) $1 billion Build Back Better Regional Challenge.

Students Prototype 3D Printed Bridge Competition
Civil engineering students from NJIT, Princeton, Stevens Institute of Technology, and three area high schools competed in a 3D-printed bridge competition at NJIT’s Makerspace that saw NJIT students taking home a first place prize in the “Stiffest Bridge” category. Both the collegiate and high school divisions were judged on five categories: best presentation, least support material, fastest assembly time, best aesthetics, and stiffest bridge. NJIT and Princeton tied for first place in overall score.

Bloom has been presented the Lifetime Achievement award by The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. for his and the university’s extensive experience, notable accomplishments and role as a leader, role model and significant contributor in championing diversity in STEM.

Computing Student Applied Neural Networks to Sound Waves as AMD Intern
Bhargav Samineni loves applied math, and there are few better ways to see math in action than working on scientific computing problems with a mentor from a chip company like AMD. Samineni interned last summer at the University of California/Los Angeles - Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, under guidance from an AMD scientific computing engineer in the application of neural networks to acoustic wave propagation, as an exercise in machine learning and a demonstration of the company's graphics processing units.

Dina Ayman, NJIT Alum and Professor, Named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in Enterprise Tech
Her 20s have been a busy time for Dina Ayman: earning two degrees at NJIT in the same year, working at Intel and Microsoft, teaching at her alma mater and starting a consultancy dedicated to diversity and inclusion. Along the way, she achieved her dream of working at the intersection of engineering and technology, and became a role model for women interested in STEM. And now Forbes is recognizing all that, by naming her to its 2022 list of 30 Under 30 in Enterprise Technology.

NJIT Joins NASA-Funded Project Where You Can Be a "Solar Jet Hunter"
Scientists at NJIT’s Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR) are joining a new research project, led by researchers at the University of Minnesota (UMN) with support from NASA, which will give volunteering citizen-scientists the chance to contribute toward our understanding of explosive activity on the Sun — all from the comfort of their own computers.

Ishani Chatterjee - ECE PhD Student of the Month - December 2021
Ishani Chatterjee successfully defended her dissertation defense on December 1, 2021. She worked under the guidance of Professor Mengchu Zhou, Distinguished Professor. Her research is in Natural Language Processing, Big Data, Optimization Models, and Data Analytics. Her research topic directly relates to the Sentiment Analysis of customer reviews focusing on online retail stores like Amazon. She has published papers in journals such as IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems, Entropy, etc., and a reviewer of technical papers for WF-IOT 2021, IEEE Access 2020.

NJIT Students Design & Build Home to Address Newark's Housing Crisis
Fifteen undergraduate students in NJIT's architecture program have designed and built a prototype home that may be part of the solution to Newark’s housing crisis. The “tiny home” is approximately 8 feet by 12 feet and was designed to help address the city’s homeless population. Erin Pellegrino and Charlie Firestone, adjunct professors of the design studio, also explore some of the root causes of homelessness and how people may be impacted both by individual circumstances and societal structures.

Management College Adds Avanade Consultant to Advisory Board
Martin Tuchman School of Management recently added Valentin Guerin, an Avanade Inc. director and client lead, to its Board of Advisors. Avanade, a global consulting firm specializing in Microsoft software and services, began funding and mentoring NJIT students in 2015.

The NJIT men's swimming and diving team picked up its second straight victory with a 179-115 home win over the La Salle Explorers Friday evening at the Wellness and Events Center Natatorium.

O'Hearn's Record 42 Points Carry NJIT to Come From Behind, 2OT Win at Lafayette
Dylan O'Hearn scored a Division I program-record 42 points, including 36 after halftime, to help lead the NJIT men's basketball team to a come-from-behind 90-86 victory in double overtime against host Lafayette on Sunday afternoon. Fifteen of O'Hearn's points came during the two overtime periods as the senior was the only NJIT player to score after regulation.

2022 National Black Political Convention Finds a Home at NJIT
New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark will host a National Black Political Convention in the summer of 2022 – 50 years after the first took place in Gary, Indiana. Organizers of the four-day event, which will take place Aug. 4-7, include Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jackson, Miss. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and James Mtume, a veteran music producer and musician who played with Miles Davis.

Computing College Expands Job Options in 'Early Access to Talent' Program
NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing is matching top tech talent from its student ranks with companies needing to remain ahead of the curve in a competitive marketplace, in a new initiative called Early Access to Talent. The pre-employment program offers companies the opportunity to cultivate a custom candidate pool according to their specific recruiting objectives among students pursuing an M.S. degree in any area of computer and information technology offered through the college.

Julie Ancis Appointed Interim Chair of Dept. of Informatics in Ying Wu College of Computing
The Ying Wu College of Computing is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Julie Ancis, as interim chair of the department of Informatics, commencing December 1, 2021. Ancis joined the department this Fall from NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts where she launched the new Cyberpsychology degree program.

Samuel Carlos Wins Boren Scholarship Award to Study in Taiwan
The world is at Samuel Carlos’ fingertips. Since coming NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College out of high school with an associates degree in math and computer science, he’s interned at Amazon, Google, and Facebook. He’s since added a third major - history with a focus on the history of computer science and is now planning to study Mandarin and Southeast Asian technology and politics at National Taiwan University in the spring and summer of 2022.

Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Method Wins GSA Research Showcase
NJIT's annual Graduate Student Association Research Day returned to the campus this week, after being cancelled last year because of COVID, with 39 students who are pursuing doctoral and master's degrees showcasing their cutting-edge research on topics such as the pandemic, climate, transportation and cybersecurity.
