Minds Matter at NJIT: Raising Awareness of Mental Health
Across campus, students clad in lime-green T-shirts gave out ribbons, stickers and brochures, and in the Central King Building, an important discussion open to the NJIT community was held. Both activities marked NJIT’s observance of World Mental Health Day, Oct. 10. They also represented the first public endeavor of Minds Matter, a new student organization at the university dedicated to raising awareness of and stopping the stigma surrounding mental health disorders.

NJIT Invited to Present at National HBCU Conference
In Washington D.C. in September, the U.S. Department of Education’s White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) held the 2018 National HBCU Week Conference, “HBCU Competitiveness: Aligning Institutional Missions with America’s Priorities.” Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM) Associate Dean Cheickna Sylla was there as a panelist, discussing the partnership between MTSM and IBM that is providing a fast track to critical-skills development for success in today’s digitally driven global business world.

NJIT President Captures Award for Economic Development; Infrastructure Improvement
The New Jersey Alliance for Action recently held its 44th annual Eagle Awards Celebration, which recognizes individuals and firms for their dedication and contribution towards improving the State of New Jersey’s economy. Held at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick, six awards were handed out to representatives from business, education, engineering and government.

Physicist Ken Chin Wins an Edison Patent Award for Next-Generation Solar Cell Technology
Physicist Ken Chin, a scientist, author and inventor, received a Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award last night from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey for his work on a promising new method for advancing sustainable energy production: next-generation solar cells. Chin focuses on improving the performance and efficiency of thin-film solar cells based on cadmium telluride (CdTe), which are potentially a lower-cost alternative to silicon because they require fewer natural resources to produce electricity and take up much less space on buildings.

NJIT Pre-Law Student Sets Out to Be Crowned Miss New Jersey USA
What had been a typical summer this past August all changed for Alisa Scivetti ’19 after she came across a social media advertisement browsing through her Snapchat story. The open-call advertisement encouraged applications for a chance of entering a highly selective, once-in-a-lifetime competition — one that would test Scivetti against some of New Jersey’s most impressive young women onstage, in front of a live audience of thousands.

NJIT has been ranked among only four universities in New Jersey to make U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 Best Global Universities list, joining Princeton, Rutgers-New Brunswick and Rutgers-Newark Universities.

East Coast Meets West Coast at Honors College Virtual Networking Event
On a Wednesday afternoon, in a handful of rooms along the second-floor corridor of Albert Dorman Honors College, NJIT students and alumni networked, albeit not in person. The five participating alumni appeared on screen via Webex from the West Coast for the college’s Virtual Silicon Valley Networking event, interacting with and answering questions from small groups of students that rotated from room to room every 15 minutes.

Researchers Create AI Project on Display at 4th Istanbul Design Biennial
How well do you know your whereabouts? Better yet, how does one get acquainted with a new location when traveling or relocating? A team of researchers at NJIT has created aplace-based artificial intelligence project that helps denizens expand their knowledge of the city of Istanbul. “[AI]stanbul has been designed as a curious machine that aims to be a virtual native,” explains the [AI]stanbul team about the installation on display at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, Sept. 22 – Nov 4.

NJIT Center for Pre-College Programs to Host Hands-On Workshop on Nov. 14
The Center for Pre-College Programs at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will be hosting a workshop for middle and high school teachers and STEM curriculum specialists on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m in Central King Building Room 116 and NJIT Makerspace. The workshop will focus on teaching 3D engineering principles applied to a rotational equilibrium problem and classroom applications of 3D printing and laser cutting. The workshop includes continental breakfast and lunch, and easy on-campus parking is available.

Ally Nick Named ASUN Coach of the Year; Fiona Wright Selected ASUN Freshman of the Year
Three NJIT women's soccer players were selected to the 2018 ASUN All-Conference team, headed by Freshman of the Year Fiona Wright and Coach of the Year Ally Nick, the league office announced at the women's soccer awards banquet on the campus of NJIT Thursday evening. In addition to Nick and Wright, senior midfielder Arianna Gerber was selected to the 11-person first-team, which included Wright. Sophomore defender Nicole Loehle was named to the second-team while Wright was selected to the All-Freshman team.

The joint lab will explore wider applications for blockchain JD.com, China’s largest retailer online or offline, has launched a joint research lab for blockchain technologies with the Ying Wu College of Computing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISCAS).

NJIT's Michel Boufadel Devises New Methods for Measuring Oil Spill Discharge
Research by NJIT’s Michel Boufadel on the mechanics of oil dispersion following a spill was recently highlighted by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), a consortium that investigates the impacts of oil, dispersed oil and dispersants on the ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico and coastal States. GoMRI aims to better elucidate the dynamics of spill events, as well as their environmental impacts and public health implications, and to develop oil and gas detection, characterization and remediation technologies in order to improve spill mitigation strategies.

NJIT Researchers Published for Discoveries in Battery Technology
NJIT researchers are finding alternative solutions to a material that has become an essential, yet costly, building block in the supply chain of today’s smart device-driven world — cobalt. Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Dibakar Datta and his research team were recently published in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, a prestigious journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

2 First-Year Architecture and Design Students Share Why They Chose NJIT
Every year, we go through the ritual of rounding up some of the newest members of our student body: astute first-year students, who are critical thinkers in pursuit of a dynamic intellectual environment and insightful instruction. And every year, even as the average overall SAT score of our incoming class (1287) and undergraduate enrollment (1,296 freshmen selected out of 8,126 applications) continue to soar, we marvel at all the ways these gung-ho boundary-pushers descend on campus with a clear vision for their future, ready to take ownership of their education.

Martin Tuchman School of Management Students Attend Dreamforce 2018
Salesforce recently hosted its 15th annual Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, Calif., Sept. 24-28, 2018, aimed to provide students, business leaders and technology experts with an opportunity to come together and educate themselves through many exciting sessions, keynotes and expo centers. What started with 1,300 attendees at the first Dreamforce in 2003 now had over 160,000 attendees participating all-around San Francisco.

Doctoral Student Published in Premier Academic Journals
Weizhi Chen, a third-year Ph.D. student in Business Data Science at NJIT’s Martin Tuchman School of Management, has recently been published in two premier academic journals. She has been working with her adviser, Assistant Professor of Marketing and Entrepreneurship Haisu Zhang, on research projects concerning marketing analytics and product innovation. Their first research paper, “Crowdfunding Technological Innovations: Interaction between Consumer Benefits and Rewards,” was published in Technovation (Impact Factor=4.802).
