NJIT Mathematics Students Finish Finalists at 2018 NBA Hackathon
In August, more than 700 teams comprised of statisticians, programmers, engineers and students from across North America applied to enter this year’s “2018 NBA Hackathon” — a data-driven competition to “build tools that solve important and challenging problems in the NBA.” It was then that a team of three mathematics students from NJIT applied for and earned distinguished selection into the contest’s final 20-team field, scheduled to compete at the NBA headquarters in Secaucus, NJ this past fall.

Guards Lead Highlanders to 4-0 Start
Junior guard Shyquan Gibbs posted game-highs in points (15) and assists (4) to lead NJIT past Kean University, 73-40, on Wednesday at the Wellness and Events Center. With the win, the Highlanders have started a season 4-0 for the first time since they competed at the Division-III level in 1996-97.

NJIT Launches Corporate Data Science and Analytics Training Program
Addressing a critical need in today’s data-driven world, the Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) at NJIT now offers a training program in Data Science and Analytics, tailored to those developing and using this technology in the corporate world. This fall three YWCC professors delivered a three-course version of the program at the United Parcel Service (UPS) campus in Parsippany, N.J.

This Certificate Alumna Adds Management Skills to Her Resume
Cynthia Hassler attributes her interest in biomedical engineering first to her father, whom she describes as “a very technical guy” who involved her in different hands-on projects at his office and their home. “I really was exposed to being able to fix things and troubleshoot from my dad,” said Hassler. “And then I always really enjoyed … being able to solve problems using science and math.

New Heights, New Goals for NJ's "Future Ready" Schools at Workshop 2018
Last month, New Jersey educators and stakeholders met at the Atlantic City Convention Center for New Jersey School Boards Association’s “Workshop 2018” — the state’s largest annual professional development conference for school leaders. The conference staged a record turnout of “Future Ready” certified schools and districts improving digital education practices and resources for New Jersey students.

NJIT Tennis Hosts Grand Slam Series Event for Special Olympic Athletes
The NJIT men's and women's tennis teams hosted a Tennis Grand Slam Series Event for Special Olympic Athletes on Saturday, November 10, coordinated by the NJIT head coaches Ira Miller, Zaki Abdelrahman and Casey Henderson, the Coach Education and Sports Training Director at the Lawrenceville, New Jersey Special Olympics headquarters.

NJIT Basketball Alumnus Tim Coleman Shining in Luxembourg
Former NJIT basketball star Tim Coleman '17 is representing the Highlanders program with flying colors. This past week, he was named Interperformances Player of the Week of the Total League for his performance with Etzella in Luxembourg. The Union, N.J., native notched 32 points and 10 rebounds in an 88-68 win over Sparta (3-4). In fact, Coleman is leading the league at 29.3 ppg. In the process, the 24-year-old product of St. Anthony's High School has guided Etzella to a 6-1 record and a second-place standing in the early stages of the season.

NJIT Named a Top University for Campus Safety Initiatives ... Again!
For the second year in a row, New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Department of Public Safety was cited among the Top 25 safest campuses in the country. Ranked 22nd out of 4,706 eligible U.S.-accredited higher-education institutions, the university is also the only school in New Jersey to receive this national honor for 2018.

NJIT Men's Basketball Off to Historic Start
The NJIT men's basketball team became the nation's first NCAA program to reach three victories against Division-I opponents this season following Sunday's 63-60 win over Brown University. Of the five other teams that remain undefeated with at least three wins, only Missouri State University has joined NJIT in doing so exclusively against Division-I competition. There are 353 programs competing at the NCAA Division-I level.

New Veterans' Lounge Opens for NJIT Military Members
Already ranked nationwide as a “Best Institution for Veterans” by College Factual, a leading source of higher education analytics and insights, NJIT has just unveiled a new veterans’ lounge to support military members in the NJIT community. The new lounge features computers with CAC card readers, a color printer, refrigerator, microwave, television and lockers. It also has a private office within the space for one-on-one sessions with members of the Department of Veterans Affairs, counselors or employers.

NJIT Men's Basketball Brushes Off Colgate in Home-Opening Thriller
Senior Reilly Walsh scored a career-high and game-high 21 points as NJIT outlasted Colgate University, 81-78, in overtime in the season-opener on Tuesday at the Wellness and Events Center (WEC). But it was another senior that sealed the win.

An array of more than 100 technology-focused engineers, device designers and project managers, joined by NJIT alumni and elected officials, gathered on campus today to mark the establishment of NJIT’s School of Applied Engineering and Technology (SAET) within the university’s Newark College of Engineering.

Architecture Alumnus Wins Medal at the London Design Biennale
The London Design Biennale 2018 Medal for the most outstanding overall contribution has been awarded to architectural historian and NJIT alumnus Mohamed Elshahed ’05, who curated “Modernist Indignation,” an Egyptian installation that pays homage to Al Emara, the first Arabic-language design magazine focused on contemporary architecture in Egypt, from 1939 to 1959, and its founder, architect Sayed Karim.

2018-19 Men's Basketball Season Preview
The third-year of the "BK Era" at NJIT could very well be described as an episode of the Young and the Restless. Head Coach Brian Kennedy possesses a roster composed of seven (50 percent) underclassmen, yet features five seniors (36 percent) who are looking to guide the Highlanders to their first all-time ASUN Tournament victory – as well as a loftier goal of earning a conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in their last hurrah.

NJIT Among Nation's Top-Ranked Colleges for Biology in 2019
New Jersey Institute of Technology has been ranked among the best colleges for biology students in the U.S., according to College Factual’s recently released “2019 Best Biology Colleges” rankings. The new rankings indicate that NJIT’s degree programs in biology place in the top 15 percent of all general biology programs offered in the country, improving the university’s national position 82 slots over the past year. The new rankings also recognize NJIT as having one of the top five biology programs in New Jersey.

Meet Ying Wu College of Computing's New Department Chairs
This fall, NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) welcomed two new department chairs: Frank Biocca, chair of the informatics department, and Baruch Schieber, chair of the computer science department. Biocca and Schieber bring a vast array of experience and knowledge to NJIT.
