Blake Brancato Breaks 5K Record at 2018 Larry Ellis Invitational
Blake Brancato broke the 5K record at the 2018 Larry Ellis Invitational held at Princeton Friday. The senior was the only Highlander participant at the invite. Brancato broke the 5K record coming in first with a time of 14:45.48, three seconds faster than the second place finisher from Villanova.

NJIT's Top Student Researchers Take Center Stage at Dana Knox Student Research Showcase
This month, the work of NJIT’s top student researchers was put on display at the 2018 Knox Student Research Showcase, “A Glimpse Into the Future”. The showcase, which annually honors outstanding research done at NJIT by its graduate and undergraduate students, awarded Najmaddin Akhundov first place among this year’s graduate researchers for developing a computational model to track and control invasive species that threaten the environment.

With cherry blossoms at peak season, more than 200 members of the Newark College of Engineering (NCE) community gathered this week at Nanina’s in Branch Brook Park to pay tribute to their own – high-flying seniors setting off on careers, alumni who have already made their mark on the world, and professors, staff and friends of the university who inspire and support ambitious NJIT engineers year after year.

NJIT Ranks #1 in Forbes list for Student Upward Mobility
A recent report from Forbes ranks NJIT #1 nationally for colleges with the highest percentage of students from the bottom fifth of the income distribution who end up in the top fifth. The study is based on an analysis by The Equality of Opportunity Project which compares the financial status of a student’s family before they enter college and the graduate’s earnings after college.

NJIT Launches Program to Expand Access to M.S. Degrees in Computing
NJIT, one of the nation’s leading public technological universities, will offer a new program this fall that puts students on the fast track to earn a master’s degree in one of six graduate programs offered by the Department of Computer Science at Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC).

Among NJIT's Women Engineers, Junior Jaasrini Vellore is Judged "Outstanding"
Success in a Snapshot: Jaasrini Vellore*, a biomedical engineering student who specializes in biomaterials, was honored at the 2018 NCE Salute to Excellence as the Madame Mau Outstanding Female Engineering Student. Although she’s a junior, Vellore’s accomplishments – from a 3.96 GPA, to a key role mentoring freshmen in her department, to research on a longstanding problem with hearing aids, to hospital internships – wowed the committee nonetheless. What also impressed them were qualities that can’t be quantified – her compassion and her ability to quietly lead.

Honors College Senior Wins in Regional Entrepreneurship Competition
Dylan Renaud, an Albert Dorman Honors College senior studying applied physics and math, won $1,000 at a business plan competition hosted April 12 by the College of Business and Public Management at Kean University. Renaud’s business concept, one of 120 submitted by student entrepreneurship teams from NJIT, Kean University, Wenzhou University (China) and DECA high schools, is a novel enterprise software system

Men's Lacrosse Earns First Home Program Win with 15-8 Victory Over Hampton
NJIT men's lacrosse earned their first ever home program with a 15-8 victory over Hampton on Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders other two program wins came at Dartmouth in 2016 and at Hampton in April of last year. Men's lacrosse celebrated Senior Day prior to the first face-off, honoring its four seniors Mark Bannon, Nick Marzullo, Ishmael Menns and Matthew Valdez. NJIT led the game in shots 45-30, were 19-for-27 from the face-off circle and led in ground balls 38-26 which is a season-high and one short of the program high 39 ground balls.

IBM Boot Camp Is a 'Shoe-in' for Student Success
Last fall NJIT entered into a first-of-its-kind partnership with IBM Global University Programs to deliver digital technologies and education to NJIT students. Not only is NJIT the first university in the country to adopt the venerable technology corporation’s IBM Skills Academy, it also is the only one in North America to do so.

Fulbright Winner Brendan Dente Heads Off This Summer for a Two-Year Stint in the Netherlands
Brendan Dente ’18, a chemical engineer with a talent for product design and a yen for travel, has won a Fulbright scholarship to spend the next two years earning a master’s degree at one of Europe’s major STEM hubs, the Technological University of Delft (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. He intends to spend his time there “delving deeply into molecular engineering,” a subject that focuses on the arrangement of molecules in chemical compounds in order to improve products.

Tara Alvarez is Named a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering
Tara Alvarez, a professor of biomedical engineering who studies the links between visual disorders and the brain and develops novel devices to identify and treat them, has been named a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Alvarez joined approximately 150 new fellows, who represent the top 2 percent of the medical and biological engineering community, at an induction ceremony this past weekend at AIMBE’s 2018 annual meeting at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Not long after his arrival to the New York Giants in 2005, Justin Tuck and his wife, Lauran, founded Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy to bring greater educational and career opportunities to youth in the New York City metro-area.

Fostering a Vision for The Weiss-Aug Group: Dieter Weissenrieder '76
Dieter Weissenrieder emigrated from Germany in 1960 as a tool and die maker to work for his uncle’s tooling business. He quickly became the manager of the company, and after working for the family business for 10 years, the company was sold to a large firm. He then founded Weiss-Aug in 1972 with his partner, Kurt Augustin, while pursuing his industrial engineering degree at NJIT.

Piotr Namiotko Earns EIVA Offensive Player of the Week
NJIT sophomore Piotr Namiotko has been selected EIVA Offensive Player of the Week for his performance last week EIVA Coordinator Brian Snow announced. Namiotko earns his first EIVA Offensive Player of the Week award after recording 60 kills while hitting .300 in 13 sets, averaging 4.62 kills per set. Innovation Day 2018
An interdisciplinary engineering team developing an enzyme-blocking drug designed to reduce levels of LDL, or “bad cholesterol,” was the winner of this year’s TechQuest challenge, announced this week at NJIT’s sixth annual Innovation Day.
