NJIT Roar into ASUN Conference Play with 72-52 Win
Senior Abdul Lewis crossed 1,000 career points and sophomore Zach Cooks netted up 19 points in NJIT's win over Kennesaw State, 72-52, in ASUN Conference action at the Wellness and Events Center on Saturday. Kennesaw State (3-13, 0-1 ASUN) took charge in the first half, taking a 30-23 lead into the break, before the Highlanders (13-3) came roaring back in the second half, outscoring the Owls, 49-22.

NJIT Salesforce Student Ambassador Group Successfully Completes the Fall 2018 Semester
By Shravanthi Budhi NJIT’s Salesforce Student Ambassador Group has successfully completed the fall 2018 semester with a lot of landmark achievements. The Salesforce Student Ambassador Program, launched fall 2017 by a student leader, Shravanthi Budhi, and a faculty adviser, Melodi Guilbault, is a partnership platform initiated by Salesforce and the university’s Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM).

Economic Outlook: Finance Professor Presents at Annual Forecasting Conference
William V. Rapp, Martin Tuchman School of Management’s Henry J. Leir Professor of International Trade and Business, and director of the Leir Center for Financial Bubble Research, was one of 34 presenters invited to discuss the 2019 economic forecast at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s 32nd Annual Economic Outlook Symposium. The event, held Nov. 30, welcomed participants from manufacturing, banking, academia and other industries, and consulting and service firms.

Governor Murphy Announces Initiatives to Spur Development of New Jersey's Innovation Economy
Governor Phil Murphy has recently announced two initiatives — the STEM Loan Forgiveness Program and the N.J. Career Accelerator Internship Program — to encourage individuals in STEM fields to make a long-term commitment to building and maintaining a career in New Jersey. The initiatives were part of the Governor’s Fiscal Year 2019 budget message.

Senior Vice Provost for Research Chosen to Chair NIH Research Network Board
Atam Dhawan, senior vice provost for research at NJIT, has recently been selected to chair the Independent Expert Board (IEB) of the Point-of-Care Technologies Research Network (POCTRN). POCTRN was created in 2007 to drive the development of appropriate point-of-care diagnostic technologies though collaborative efforts that simultaneously merge scientific and technological capabilities with clinical need.

Mechanical Engineering at NJIT Earns Top Ranking
College Factual ranks NJIT’s mechanical engineering program in the Top 15 percent of all mechanical engineering programs in the United States. Mechanical engineering at NJIT moved up 14 slots over last year, from No. 53 to No. 39, out of 272 schools nationwide.

New Walking Cavefish Study Explores Origins of Quadrapedal Walking
A new research collaboration between New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Louisiana State University (LSU) and University of Florida is set to launch the first evolutionary study of the unique pelvic structure and walking mechanics of blind cavefish (Cryptotora thamicola) — the only living species of fish known capable of walking on land similarly to four-limbed mammal and amphibian vertebrates, or tetrapods.

Electrical Engineering Program Earns "Best for Vets" 2019 Accolade
College Factual, a leading source of higher education analytics and insights, has ranked NJIT in the top 10 percent of all schools in the nation when it comes to offering a quality education to veterans studying electrical engineering. NJIT’s electrical engineering program is ranked #27 out of 269 for veteran friendliness of all colleges and universities reviewed by College Factual. NJIT improved its ranking position 5 slots over the previous year’s ranking of #32.

PHOTOS: NJIT Music Initiative Performs Winter Concert Series, Honors Student
Now in its fourth year, the Music Initiative at New Jersey Institute of Technology has become a fixture on campus and this week performed their winter concert series. The music community took the gathering as an opportunity to honor and remember Kevin Milford-Sanchez, an NJIT student who passed away earlier this year. Kevin was a prolific member in both the concert and jazz bands who played multiple instruments.

Men's Basketball Receives AP Ranking Vote for First Time in School History
NJIT men's basketball appeared in "Others Receiving Votes" in the latest release of the AP Top-25 on Monday, December 10, marking the first time in program history the Highlanders have been recognized in the poll. The Highlanders are one of just five programs in the country with at least 10 wins.

NJIT freshman Fiona Wright added to her 2018 accolades, earning Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year recognition as the organization released its women's soccer postseason awards.

NJIT to Hold 13th Annual Science Olympiad for Middle and High School Students
On Jan. 8, 2019 (snow date Jan. 15), the New Jersey Science Olympiad (NJSO) returns to NJIT for the 13th consecutive year. The event, part of a national science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition, will welcome nearly 700 middle and high school students who possess both strong academic achievements and great interest in STEM fields.

More than 250 college students recently descended on NJIT for a 24-hour hackathon. The event challenged students to develop a software solution addressing some interesting applications of their choice, in a fast-paced, collaborative, yet competitive environment lasting a mere 24 hours.

Assistant Professor of Finance Stephen Taylor and Assistant Professor of Accounting Ming Fang co-authored the paper, “Unbiased weighted variance and skewness estimators for overlapping returns,” in the Swiss Journal of Economics and Statistics (SJES).

Computing Dean Elected to National Academy of Inventors
At NJIT, Craig Gotsman is best known as dean of Ying Wu College of Computing. Within the scientific community, he is better known as the inventor of a number of cutting-edge software technologies for manipulating 3D geometric data, enabling their use in a variety of applications. Many of these technologies have been patented and commercialized, some through startup companies, which Gotsman founded — spinoffs of his academic research. In recognition of these achievements, Gotsman has been named a Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI) for 2018.

Music Initiative at NJIT to Host the Winter Wind and String Concert, Winter Jazz Concert
The Music Initiative at NJIT would like you to join us for the Winter Wind and String Concert and Winter Jazz Ensemble Concert. These concerts are dedicated to Kevin Milfort-Sanchez’s memory who played oboe and occasional saxophone with wind and string ensemble, and first saxaphone with the jazz ensemble. The Wind Ensemble will play a composition called “A Prayer,” by the composer Patrick J. Burns who donated this piece in Kevin’s memory. Our students have asked to speak about their fellow musician. --

Governor Phil Murphy Meets with Federal Delegation at NJIT
Governor Phil Murphy visited NJIT’s campus today to meet with a federal delegation of 11 House and Senate representatives. Topics of discussion included the Affordable Care Act, the gateway tunnel project, lead and water infrastructure, and the importance of military installations. Murphy described the meeting as “a very fruitful discussion” and a “regular event that New Jersey will (help assure) … New Jersey gets its rightful share at the federal level.”
