Brinson's Buzzer Beater Lifts NJIT to First America East Victory at League Favorite Vermont
In a game that lasted 50 minutes, it was a put-back layup in the final tenth of a second that made the difference. San Antonio Brinson's buzzer-beating layup put NJIT ahead for good as the Highlanders earned their inaugural America East Conference victory over defending league champions and preseason favorite Vermont on Monday at Patrick Gymnasium.

Computer Science Student Wins Business Challenge With Health Care App
Yashwee J. Kothari, an Albert Dorman Honors College and computer science student from Parsippany, placed first among student competitors at this year’s New Business Model Competition for her innovative work supporting patients living with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The annual competition was hosted virtually by NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Acceleration Center Dec. 7, marking its twelfth year.

NJIT@JerseyCity Celebrates First Graduates of M.S. in Data Science Program
NJIT @JerseyCity celebrated the graduation of its first group of master’s students, with four students earning their Master of Science in Data Science at the end of the fall semester this week. While a typical part-time M.S. program takes five semesters to complete, including a full summer semester, these students raced ahead to complete the program in just four semesters.

NJIT Researchers Help Prevent Cyberattacks From Software Supply Chain
An open-source tool that cryptographically protects the layout of your software code supply chain is now available from researchers at NJIT, New York University and Purdue University, bolstering the type of weakness exploited in the recent cyberattack on the commercial SolarWinds monitoring application used by the U.S. government.

A room in the university library is being rebuilt as the Leir Business Data Observatory, providing a dedicated high-tech space for graduate students and faculty from Martin Tuchman School of Management to collaboratively study data science as it pertains to business and finance.

The book, Collaborations Vol. 1, by APEX Collective, includes works of art, particularly painting collaborations, created from 2014-2020 by various artists that were exhibited in a multitude of art galleries, including the Ryan Joseph Gallery in Denver, Knew Conscious Gallery also in Denver, Alex Grey's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in New York, the Philadelphia VisionaryArts Gallery and many more.

COVID-19 Vaccines Breathe Life into Research Done 20 Years Ago
Research conducted 20 years ago by a former NJIT dean is being put to new use in the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech. Barry Cohen, who was an associate dean of Ying Wu College of Computing, worked on the algorithm for bioengineering stable messenger RNA (mRNA), a key ingredient of the vaccine recently approved for emergency use by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration.

Alumna Masha Drozdov '09 on Responsibility and the Value of Technical Skills
Masha Drozdov is a frequent guest critic for the advanced integrated architecture studios at Hillier College and Columbia GSAPP and has also participated as a guest for the Alumni Tea discussions at NJIT with students who are figuring out what their career paths will be. Masha’s admiration for Louis Kahns’ work and a fourth year NJIT project has been an inspiration for her volunteer work at Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. She has been a docent at the park since 2012.

Two NJIT Engineers are Elected 2020 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors
Two pioneering researchers, Rajesh Davé, a distinguished professor of chemical and materials engineering, and MengChu Zhou, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, were recently elected fellows of National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Davé and Zhou join 173 other academic innovators, together representing 115 research universities and governmental and non-profit research institutes, in this year’s class of fellows. Collectively, the group holds more than 4,700 issued U.S. patents. Davé has 15 U.S. patents and Zhou has 14.

Lyzi Litwinko Tabs Second Straight America East Conference Rookie of the Week Honor
Freshman Lyzi Litwinko was selected America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the second straight week the league office announced on Monday. The 5-foot-8 guard from Berlin, CT, averaged 9.5ppg and 5.5rpg in a pair of games for the Highlanders last week. Litwinko shot 42 percent on the week and matched her career-high with 11 points on Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Inculcating Ethics in Engineers
J. Britt Holbrook, a philosopher who specializes in science policy, is designing an innovative course in engineering ethics that focuses on justice and societal impact. The goal of the course is to help engineering students better understand how their future actions and decisions as engineers can directly affect the lives of individuals and communities at large.

In a virtual ceremony Dec. 9, NJIT President Joel S. Bloom was presented with the Martinson-Ballen Technology Supporter award by TechUnited. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a significant impact and a long-standing contribution to New Jersey's technology and innovation industries.
