35 Professionals Graduate from NJIT's Inaugural Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics Program
Matthew Berdel, a systems engineer who tests software during the workweek, spent his Saturday mornings in NJIT’s Makerspace last semester immersed in engineering of a very different sort: constructing a working machine from fabricated parts. “I wanted to know more about hardware,” Berdel explained. “I was looking for a deeper understanding of electrical and mechanical systems – and to develop a new set of skills I can rely on.”

Model Cars With Human Drivers Take to the Streets of a Miniaturized Newark
In an NJIT robotics lab spilling over with 3D-printed parts, engineering students are gutting toy trucks, SUVs, sedans and two-door Mini Coopers and refitting them with custom-designed systems: laser-cut side mirrors, wheels that can parallel park and a braking system that employs algorithms to control an electric motor, thus enabling soft and hard breaking, idling and taxiing.

Attention Bibliophiles: Pick Up a Book by an NJIT Author
Reading took center stage Aug. 9 when Book Lovers Day was celebrated throughout the country. The unofficial holiday honors reading and literature, and urges people to spend the day transported by a book. Many members of the NJIT community are published book authors, with works ranging from historical accounts and scientific manuals to career handbooks and children’s stories. In observance of Book Lovers Day, here we highlight just a few of the recent page-turners by Highlander faculty and alumni (in alphabetical order).

Deane Evans, newly named Associate Dean of Research at Hillier College, has been at the School of Architecture at NJIT since 2001, building one of the most successful architecture research programs in the country as Executive Director of the Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) and the Center for Resilient Design.

Students Bring New Ideas to NJIT For Black Lives Matter Movement
African-American students, backed by members of the faculty, said they will look to the college administration for help enacting new measures that could lead to more opportunities for Black people in NJIT classrooms and beyond. The ideas, expressed in two virtual forums this month as part of a campus reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement, include creating a university task force on racism that would involve student members, forming a required class or seminar to educate new students on inclusion and actively increasing the number of Black professors.

Hillier Faculty Building Energy Research Portfolio Growing
Associate Professor Hyojin Kim has distinguished herself in a number of ways since she joined the Hillier College of Architecture and Design in fall of 2019. She came to NJIT with a research project funded by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) within the U.S. Department of the Interior. This research aims to develop a new field toolkit and methodology for evaluating the Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) performance of historic buildings for their sustainable and effective reuse, while preserving the integrity and fabric of those buildings.

In Xavante Territory, the Researched Recruit the Researchers
By: Rosanna Dent, Assistant Professor of History Every year, with the dry season, come the researchers. They arrive with audio recorders, microscopes and glucose meters. They bring backpacks filled with GPS recorders, cameras and field notebooks. They ask endless streams of questions about how to live in the Cerrado of Central Brazil. The Xavante community members who receive and host us are long accustomed to these visits.

NJ Consortium Develops Mobile Medical Unit to Address Health Facility Shortage
In response to the extreme challenges to clinical capacity posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, three New Jersey institutions – New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), University Hospital in Newark and The Tuchman Foundation – are collaborating in a unique partnership on the development of modular, mobile medical care facilities to be deployed to areas of surging disease outbreaks and other disasters, as well as to regions that lack health care infrastructure.
