Shaping the Future of Cities: The Newark Civil Rights Museum & Center for Restorative Justice
The Spring 2021 "Shaping the Future of Cities” studio is being taught by Roger Smith, design director at Gensler. The challenge for students is to re-imagine the American City and explore the possibilities for developing 21st century models for building an equitable future. The events of 2020 have highlighted a broad spectrum of persistent racial injustices and inequalities that have long plagued America and its cities.

NJIT Picks Up First America East Conference Sweep Over Hartford
NJIT picked up it first America East Conference series sweep of the season, behind freshman Lyzi Litwinko's first career double-double, combining for 10 points, 13 rebounds as the Highlanders cruised to a 62-42 win over visiting Hartford Monday afternoon in women's basketball conference action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.

Interior Design Program, One Decade In, Has Alumni Mentors for Students
NJIT's interior design program has new opportunities for students to learn career, leadership and life skills from alumni mentors, as its graduate population that started with the original class of 2012 expands, enters higher levels of their field and looks to give back. The idea evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic from alumnae Alma Villalba and Pamela Ospina, who in their current jobs observed colleagues from other universities serving as mentors and saw the potential for their own alma mater.

Men's Volleyball Selected Second in Preseason EIVA Coaches' Poll
NJIT has been selected second in the 2021 Preseason Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Coaches' Poll, according to the conference coaches the league office announced on Monday. The Highlanders stood at 9-5 overall, 4-3 in the EIVA, when play was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. NJIT returns all seven starters led by Alvaro Gimeno, who shared Co-Player of the Year honors in the EIVA.

Virtual Reality Helps Train Low-Vision Patients for Real-World Situations
People who have low vision — those who have difficulty seeing even when wearing corrective lens, according to American Foundation for the Blind — may soon be able to learn basic skills such as crossing the street or learning their way around by simulating the experience through a new application of virtual reality, which is being designed by NJIT Associate Professor Jacob Chakareski and his students.

Computing Sophomore Wins Application Developer Pitch Competition
Vrushti Dalal, an Albert Dorman Honors College and computer science student from Sayreville, won the new University Innovation Challenge, a pitch-style competition sponsored by the Guardian Life Insurance Company. For young entrepreneurs, pitch competitions are a popular way to present concepts, hone essential business skills and make industry connections, which can help transform their creativity and talent into viable, real-world business ventures.

Senior captain San Antonio Brinson continued his impressive season on Saturday afternoon as he helped lead the NJIT men's basketball team to a 73-67 America East conference victory against host UMass Lowell at the Costello Athletic Center.

Kimi Evans Leads NJIT with 20 Points and Nine Rebounds in Win Over Vermont
Redshirt junior Kimi Evans scored a career-best 20 points and nine rebounds, leading NJIT to a 70-60 America East Conference victory over Vermont in women's basketball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. The Highlanders, which exploded for 26 fourth quarter points, connected on nine three-pointers for the game, tying the season-best mark (nine at New Hampshire in NJIT's 78-57 win) while shooting 52.9 percent from behind the arc.

Brinson's Buzzer Beater Lifts NJIT to First America East Victory at League Favorite Vermont
In a game that lasted 50 minutes, it was a put-back layup in the final tenth of a second that made the difference. San Antonio Brinson's buzzer-beating layup put NJIT ahead for good as the Highlanders earned their inaugural America East Conference victory over defending league champions and preseason favorite Vermont on Monday at Patrick Gymnasium.

Computer Science Student Wins Business Challenge With Health Care App
Yashwee J. Kothari, an Albert Dorman Honors College and computer science student from Parsippany, placed first among student competitors at this year’s New Business Model Competition for her innovative work supporting patients living with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The annual competition was hosted virtually by NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Acceleration Center Dec. 7, marking its twelfth year.

NJIT@JerseyCity Celebrates First Graduates of M.S. in Data Science Program
NJIT @JerseyCity celebrated the graduation of its first group of master’s students, with four students earning their Master of Science in Data Science at the end of the fall semester this week. While a typical part-time M.S. program takes five semesters to complete, including a full summer semester, these students raced ahead to complete the program in just four semesters.

COVID-19 Vaccines Breathe Life into Research Done 20 Years Ago
Research conducted 20 years ago by a former NJIT dean is being put to new use in the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech. Barry Cohen, who was an associate dean of Ying Wu College of Computing, worked on the algorithm for bioengineering stable messenger RNA (mRNA), a key ingredient of the vaccine recently approved for emergency use by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration.
