NJIT Shines Again as a Top 100 University in the QS USA Rankings for 2021
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has been ranked third in New Jersey and in the top 100 nationally in the second annual Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking USA list for 2021.
More than 750 institutions across the country were considered for the ranking. At No. 90, NJIT is joined by Princeton University and Rutgers-New Brunswick as the only New Jersey institutions within the top 100.
Institutions were evaluated according to 17 metrics falling into the following broad categories: employability, diversity and internationalisation, learning experience and research. Some of the highest-weighted metrics include academic reputation, alumni outcomes, salary after 10 years, Fulbright recipients per institution, international research network, Pell Grant recipient ratios and instructional expenditure per full-time student.
NJIT’s success in these four broad categories is recognized consistently. Of particular note in the QS rankings is NJIT’s performance in the diversity and internationalization category. NJIT is ranked No. 1 nationally by Forbes for the upward economic mobility of its lowest-income students, and gets high marks for student ethnicity, international student population and Pell grant recipients in the QS ranking.
In research, NJIT’s is one of only 131 universities rated an R1 research university by the Carnegie Classification, indicating the highest level of research activity, and conducts more than $155 million in research activity each year with a $2.8 billion annual economic impact on the State of New Jersey.
For employability, NJIT is in the top 100 in the United States for the mid-career earnings of our graduates, and ranks No. 43 for college return on investment, according to PayScale.com.
For the learning experience category, NJIT was recognized recently for its successful digital transformation initiatives, which includes development of the converged learning model. This model allowed the university to quickly pivot to remote teaching and learning during the pandemic to facilitate socially distanced attendance.
