Building on New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) legacy of empowering career-focused learners, NJIT’s Learning and Development Initiative (LDI) is expanding its opportunities for professionals in the technology industry. The LDI will launch a series of accelerated, fully online technology programs in collaboration with Flatiron School. The first two non-credit programs offered will be catered towards professionals eager to level up their skills in, or make a bold career move into, game design or game programming.

“Fake it 'til you make it” won’t cut it when defending against cybersecurity attacks, especially when the “bad actors” are some of the best in the industry. However, if there has ever been a model for “practice makes perfect,” three NJIT student teams are prime examples for their outcomes in the Northeast 2 division of the National Centers of Academic Excellence (NCAE) Cyber Games. This includes the Highlanders-1 team, which not only scored first place in the region but advanced to third place nationally and became the highest-ranked school in the Northeast region.

NJIT’s Dana Knox Research Showcase returned in 2025 to once again highlight the innovative and impactful work of students across disciplines. Git, the most common protocol for computer programmers to keep track of their code, is becoming more secure because of software jointly developed by researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology and New York University. Git underpins services such as GitHub, which alone has more than 100 million active users worldwide. But there have been security concerns over the years, and one problem is that Git-based systems rely on centralized administration requiring users to trust without the ability to verify, NJIT computer science professor Reza Curtmola explained.

As Acewin Tam prepares to cross the graduation stage at NJIT, she reflects not just on the culmination of five years of rigorous study, but on a deeply personal journey of growth, discovery and purpose. An architecture student whose work straddles the line between the technical and the poetic, Tam has made her mark not only through design excellence but through a commitment to community, justice and innovation.

A robotic alarm clock that hides from you, so you have to get out of bed anyway if you wish to silence it, was the star Highlander entry in the spring 2025 edition of the MakeNJIT hardware hackathon. The clockmakers earned third place overall among 47 teams from several universities. Members of Team Daniel knew that many tinkerers have built such devices, but they designed their own version just for the fun and education of it.

Jason Ballen earned medalist honors at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, finishing fifth in the javelin with a throw of 59.24m. It marks the second straight season with a Penn Relays medalist for the Highlanders. NJIT also competed at the TCNJ Lions Invitational. The Highlanders recorded four personal-bests and six top five marks in program history over the weekend.

The average person is estimated to consume up to a credit card's worth of plastic particles each week. However, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) undergrad Allison Harbolic is now uncovering the effects that our regular intake of nano-sized plastics can have at a critical stage of life — during pregnancy. Harbolic's latest research into how nanoplastics impact placental health recently won her prestigious honors from the Society of Toxicology (SOT), an international scientific organization with members from more than 60 countries.

Imani Ihmaid’s journey as an interior design student at NJIT is rooted in a passion for design that began in high school. After taking a drafting class and completing an internship with RH Interiors, the Paterson, New Jersey native discovered a love for interior design that solidified her decision to pursue the dual path of architecture and interior design. At NJIT, she found a welcoming and respected environment that fostered her creativity and growth.

Two of New Jersey Institute of Technology’s most distinguishing qualities — its focus on technology and commitment to access — have been recognized by Carnegie Classification. NJIT is among a small and elite group of universities nationally to receive this combination of prestigious distinctions.
