Men's Volleyball Wins Third Straight, Sweeps Ball State
The NJIT men's volleyball team won its third straight match of the season, sweeping visiting Ball State, 3-0, Saturday evening in men's volleyball non-conference action at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. The win over Ball State marks the third straight win for NJIT, who have won the last four-out-of-five matches, improving to 4-2 overall. The win over the Cardinals marks the first all-time win against Ball State.

NJIT Machine Learning Expertise Powers Tax Software for Vertex Inc.
Throughout the United States there are more than 11,000 tax jurisdictions collecting sales tax. Imagine it’s your job to keep up with all the changes to tax laws and help clients follow every new rule and file every return. That’s the task Vertex, Inc. faces daily. Vertex develops tax software and services for indirect taxes such as sales tax, consumer use tax, payroll tax and value-added tax.

NJIT Sweeps No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne
NJIT combined for a .452 hitting percentage behind Jens Feldthus and Alvaro Gimeno who combined for 24 kills and 14 digs in the Highlanders' 3-0 sweep over No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne in non-conference men's volleyball action at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center Thursday evening.

Engineering Prof. Misra Named IEEE Fellow, Stops Transistors From Leaking Energy
Durgamadhab Misra is the newest member of NJIT's Newark College of Engineering to become a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Misra won the prestigious award for his ongoing research on preventing transistors from leaking electrons. Every time a transistor leaks an electron, it wastes battery life or hurts performance.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago has once again lauded William V. Rapp, the Henry J. Leir Professor of International Trade and Business and director of the Leir Center for Financial Bubble Research at NJIT's Martin Tuchman School of Management, for his economic forecasting acumen.

Biological Sciences Faculty Member Brooke Flammang Featured in Scientific American Podcast
Federated Department of Biological Sciences faculty member Brooke Flammang was featured on an episode of the podcast "60-Second Science" hosted by Scientific American. Dr. Flammang and colleagues recently discovered a previously unknown receptor in remora – fish that are uniquely adapted to hitchhiking on other marine organisms such as whales and sharks. This receptor, previously only known in platypus and echidnas, allows remoras to sense touch and likely aids in their ability to affix to other animals.

Men's Volleyball Returns to the Win Column After 3-1 Victory at Lindenwood
The NJIT men's volleyball team returned back to the win column, behind sophomore Roque Nido's double-double (38 assists, 10 digs) and three players reaching double-figure kills in the Highlanders' 3-1 victory at Lindenwood Saturday evening in men's volleyball non-conference action at Hyland Arena. NJIT (2-2) dropped its first set of the match, 25-20, but bounced in the next three frames, 25-17, 26-24 and 25-20 to earn the 3-1 victory on the road.

Highlanders Use Strong Defense to Roll to Third-Straight ASUN Win
The NJIT men's basketball team won its third-straight ASUN Conference game, defeating visiting Kennessaw State 66-48 at the WEC on Saturday. The win marked the first time the Highlanders (6-12, 3-2 ASUN) have held a Division I opponent to less than 50 points since a 55-44 victory over UMass-Lowell on December 7, 2013. Kennesaw State (1-17, 0-5 ASUN) shot just 30.9% (17-for-55) in the loss on Saturday.

NJIT Scientists Measure the Evolving Energy of a Solar Flare's Explosive First Minutes
Toward the end of 2017, a massive new region of magnetic field erupted on the Sun’s surface next to an existing sunspot. The powerful collision of magnetic energy produced a series of potent solar flares, causing turbulent space weather conditions at Earth. These were the first flares to be captured, in their moment-by-moment progression, by NJIT’s then recently opened Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) radio telescope.

Science Olympiad Spotlights STEM Know-how of More Than 700 Pre-College Students
They came, they competed and, at day’s end, they convened, to learn the results of the 2020 New Jersey Science Olympiad, hosted on campus Jan. 6 by NJIT for the 14th consecutive year. Hundreds of students making up 43 teams from high schools and middle schools from throughout the Garden State put their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to the test in 19 hands-on activities.

Discovery Reveals How Remora Fishes Know When to Hitch a Ride Aboard Their Hosts
Remoras are among the most successful marine hitchhikers, thanks to powerful suction discs that allow them to stay tightly fastened to the bodies of sharks, whales and other hosts despite incredible drag forces while traveling through the ocean. But how do these suckerfish sense the exact moment when they must “stick their landing” and board their speedy hosts in the first place? A team of biologists at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Friday Harbor Labs at University of Washington (FHL-UW) and The George Washington University (GWU) now offers an answer.

Junior San Antonio Brinson set the tone with a program single-game record 37 points and senior captain Shyquan Gibbs took over down the stretch as the NJIT men's basketball team defeated North Florida 78-66 at UNF Arena.

NJIT Sweeps No. 12 USC at 2020 AVCA Showcase
NJIT hit an impressive .442 paced by junior outside hitter Alvaro Gimeno, who registered a match-best 11 kills as the Highlanders swept No. 12 USC, 3-0, Saturday evening in the 2020 AVCA Showcase hosted by Geroge Mason in the RAC. NJIT (1-1) won in straight sets 25-20, 25-20 and 25-17. In the first two sets, as a team, the Highlanders hit over .500 and combined for a .200 hitting percentage to seal the match in the third stanza.

NJIT Online Programs Among the Best, Says U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 rankings for “Best Online Programs” are out, and NJIT realized gains in four graduate-study areas: business, information technology (IT), engineering and MBA. The rankings are the result of extensive assessments over the past year of more than 1,600 online degree programs nationwide, the highest number evaluated to date.

NJIT-Stryker Alumni Club Helps High Schools Kick Off New Season of First Robotics
The NJIT-Stryker Alumni Club helped local high schools kick off the new season of First Robotics on January 4, 2020. First Robotics is a national organization that creates the requirements for robotic designs for high school teams where they build a robot and go against other regional high schools in a challenge competition event. Stryker is a now a Mid-Atlantic First Robotics regional sponsor. Stryker is funding and mentoring two N.J. high school teams; International High School in Paterson and Science Park High School in Newark.

Vatsal Shah '08H, M.S. '09, Ph.D. '14, a civil engineer with Mott MacDonald who oversees the design and construction of foundations – for wind and solar farms, wastewater treatment plants, tunnels and bridges, among others – in starkly diverse landscapes from the East Coast to Texas, is the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) “Young Engineer of the Year” for 2019.

Grant Will Help Support Greater Number of Local Pre-College Students
Since 1924, Victoria Foundation has awarded more than $300 million in grants to benefit Newark. One of the country’s oldest private foundations, Victoria dedicates itself to improving the lives of children and families in Newark, and protecting water resources and preserving open spaces throughout the Garden State.
