NJIT Researchers Awarded $620k Grant to Study Climate Change Impact of Soot
NJIT researchers have received a $620,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to advance our understanding of the way in which soot particles from combustion of fossil fuels are driving climate change in the Earth’s atmosphere. Associate Professor of Chemistry Alexei Khalizov and Associate Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering Gennady Gor will lead the project, “A Multiscale Model for Restructuring of Atmospheric Soot Particles”.

Management Professor Wins Industry Award for Teaching and Research
Associate Professor Junmin (Jim) Shi received a prestigious international award in October for his research and teaching on operations research and management science, known as OR/MS in the field, at the INFORMS conference in Indianapolis. Operations research and management science refers to the application of scientific principles to solve industrial or business problems. Shi is the first faculty member from New Jersey Institute of Technology to receive the INFORMS Prize for Teaching OR/MS Practice, which began in 1998.

NJIT Men's and Women's Fencing Teams Shine at Drew Invitational
The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams shined at the Drew Invitational as the men started its 2022-23 campaign undefeated (6-0) while the women registered a 4-1 record Sunday afternoon. The NJIT men recorded wins over: Clemson (26-1), Stevens (20-7), Drew (24-3 & 15-12), Army (24-3) and Vassar (21-6).

From NJIT to NASA, Roberto Saenz Wants to Inspire Future Generations with His Story
Roberto Saenz, winner of the first-ever Hispanic and Latinx Leadership Council (HLLC) scholarship, wants to one day be an administrator at NASA and design his own spacecraft. Saenz, a first generation Mexican-American from Union City, N.J., is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Applied Mathematics.

NJIT Experts in Augmented Reality Help Train Caretakers for the Elderly
With the world's population of geriatric patients increasing faster than enough caretakers can be trained for the difficult job, NJIT Assistant Professor of Informatics Salam Daher thinks augmented reality technology may help close the gap. Daher and her students are prototyping a digital model of an older person which is aware of its feelings and environment. Existing models only cover physical aspects, so it's opening new ground to have a patient simulator that teaches caretakers about the emotional and psychological aspects of their daily work.

Sustainability Front and Center as Bloomberg Businessweek Hosts Live Show on NJIT's Campus
Bloomberg Businessweek hosts Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec took their show on the road and across the river to NJIT’s campus for a live panel show on sustainability. The Green Energy and Climate Adaptation Panel featured Jonathan Menard, chief research officer at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab; Dena Prastos, founder of Indigo River, an environmental consulting firm; and Dr. Som Mitra, distinguished professor of chemistry and environmental science at NJIT.

Women's Soccer Holds Off Defending AE Champ Vermont With 2-1 Victory
The NJIT women's soccer team picked up a crucial victory and sent their seniors out in style with a 2-1 win over defending America East champion Vermont Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. The Highlanders (4-7-6, 1-4-2 AE) needed a victory to keep their chances of securing the final berth in next week's America East Playoffs alive and the team rose to the challenge to earn their first league win of the season. NJIT's 2022 Homecoming Unites Everything that Makes University Great
The 2022 Homecoming festivities at New Jersey Institute of Technology welcomed students, parents and alumni to an event-packed weekend that featured music, food, culture and plenty of Highlander spirit. Homecoming kicked off Oct. 6 with a concert by Kenny Beats at the Wellness and Events Center. On Saturday Oct.8, the festivities included a BBQ and beer garden, carnival, a magic show by Mark Zacharia, a Hispanic Heritage Celebration that included a mariachi performance and closed with the men’s soccer team hosting New Hampshire.

Murray Turoff: A Pioneer of Instant Messaging
Long before social networks, instant messengers, web forums, Internet Relay Chat, AOL, Compuserve, and dial-up bulletin board systems, there was EIES – Electronic Information Exchange System, pronounced like the word eyes. Developed by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Murray Turoff back in 1976, EIES is considered among the first computer-mediated, multimachine communications and conferencing systems, and a precursor to the widespread interactive communication features available today.

'Teik Talks' - Maple Hall
Join NJIT President Teik C. Lim as he gets a first-hand look at NJIT's newest residence building, Maple Hall. Maple Hall, the new apartment-style residential building at NJIT, officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 29. The building has extensive amenities such as a well-equipped outdoor terrace, a videogame room, sustainable construction, numerous single rooms, kitchens with modern appliances, Manhattan skyline views and its own parking garage.
