"Doing More with Less" Conference Explores Innovative Responses to Environmental Sustainability
The Murray Center for Women in Technology at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will hold a one-day Women Designing the Future conference—“The Environment: Doing More with Less”—on Friday, March 23. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the university’s Campus Center Ballrooms A and B.

New Jersey Innovation Institute's Cell & Gene Therapy Center Launches Biopharma Training Program
The New Jersey Innovation Institute, (NJII) an NJIT Corporation, has announced that its Cell and Gene Therapy Development Center has launched a training program to upgrade the knowledge and skills of biopharmaceutical professionals in the processing of new, breakthrough classes of biologic therapies.

Power Up: Computing Student Publishes Hand-Drawn Game on Google Play
Prior to taking the game modification development course taught by University Lecturer D.J. Kehoe last spring, computer science major Angela Vitaletti ’18 had never developed or programmed a videogame before. “I would always bite off more than I could chew, and never finish,” said Vitaletti, who is from Middlesex and transferred to NJIT from Northampton Community College in Pennsylvania. “I took game mod as a way to motivate myself because it has real deadlines and projects that D.J. helps make achievable.”

NJIT to Make a Splash With Community Outreach Event
Hundreds of high school students from Newark and around the state will visit New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) March 24 for NJIT Splash, a one-day enrichment program taught by NJIT students. The program, which debuted at NJIT last year and continues as an annual event, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to students in grades nine through 12.

Alumnus Robert Cohen Offers an Insider's View of the High-Tech World of Joint Replacement Surgery
Robert Cohen ’83, ’84, ’87, a biomedical engineer and entrepreneur who specializes in orthopedic joint replacement implants, years ago envisioned the convergence of advanced materials, new fabrication methods and robotic-assisted surgery to maximize motion restoration. In 2010, his New Jersey company, Pipeline Orthopedics, the developer of implants with porous metals designed to improve the fixation of device and bone, entered a strategic alliance with Mako Surgical Corp. in order to use Mako’s robotic systems in the operating room to help place its implants more precisely.

NJII Awarded Contract to Plan Northeast Sustainable Communities Workshop
For the fourth consecutive year, the Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE) has awarded the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), an NJIT Corporation, a contract for the Planning and Coordination Services for the 2018 Northeast Sustainable Communities Workshop to be held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, May 23, 2018.

Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore
NJIT baseball evened its record to 5-5 with a doubleheader sweep at Maryland Eastern Shore, 8-4, in game one and 7-0 in the nightcap behind a seven-inning complete game shutout by Tyler Stafflinger at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Maryland Eastern Shore took a 2-0 lead in game one after one inning. The Highlanders scored three in the third and two in the fourth for a 5-2 lead. After solo runs for the Hawks in the fourth and fifth, NJIT tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh to push ahead, 8-4, and secure the game.

Women's Tennis Sweeps Hofstra
The NJIT women's tennis team swept visiting Hofstra, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility. NJIT, which picks up its second straight win, improves to 6-5 on the season, earning the doubles point with wins at second and third doubles and sweeping the six singles contests. "Strong win today against a solid team," head coach Zaki Abdelrahman added after his teams win. "The team has developed a lot physically and mentally which gave them the edge to win the critical moments today and even against NYIT Friday night."

NJIT Research Paper on Oil Spill Investigation Featured in American Geophysical Union Publication
NJIT’s Michel Boufadel, professor of civil and environmental engineering, co-authored a paper recently accepted by Geographical Research Letters, an American Geophysical Union (AGU) publication. The paper, “Was the Deepwater Horizon Well Discharge Churn Flow? Implications on the estimation of the oil discharge and droplet size distribution,” looks to improve the understanding of the character of an uncontrolled pipeline flow. This is critical for the estimation of the oil discharge and droplet size distribution, both essential for evaluating oil spill impact.

Lenny Kaplan Named 2017-18 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year
Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan has been named a 2017-18 Division I-AAA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year (ADOY) award recipient by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Kaplan was one of 28 winners. The Athletics Director of the Year Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities. Kelly Guarino Selected to 2018 ASUN Conference All-Academic Team
NJIT senior Kelly Guarino has been selected to the 2018 ASUN Conference All-Academic team. The league office announced postseason honors and awards Thursday. This marks the first selection for Guarino, who is a business major with a concentration in marketing and minor in communications. She earned Dean's List seven-out-of-eight semesters at NJIT. Men's Fencing Ends Conference Season Undefeated; Placed Second at MACFA Championships
NJIT men's fencing ended the conference regular season undefeated and placed second at the MACFA Championships defeating the 14 teams they competed against. Despite NJIT besting them at the championships, the Highlanders earned second place with 110 wins behind Johns Hopkins who accumulate 111 victories. NJIT Featured at the National Brownfields Training Conference
NJIT played a prominent role in the National Brownfields Training Conference sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the International City/County Management Association. Held last December in Pittsburgh, the conference brought together several thousand environmental professionals, government officials, engineers, community representatives, real estate developers and investors, academics and others to learn, share ideas and experiences —and build new relationships focused on cleaning up contaminated land.
