NJIT to Host MetroLab Network 2018 National Summit with Technology, Government and Academic Leaders
U.S. technology, government and academic leaders in the areas of data analytics and innovation in urban environments will meet at the new NJIT- Wellness and Events Center (WEC) in Newark October 15-16 to discuss city-university partnerships. The MetroLab Network, launched as part of the White House’s Smart Cities Initiative in 2015, selected NJIT to host its third National Summit.

$1.5M Grant Launches Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Research Institute Focusing on Business and Industry
From stock market crashes to climate change, global disruptions pose substantial threats to corporate sustainability. To mitigate risks to their economic security, environmental accountability and social responsibility, companies must be able to identify their vulnerabilities and keep closer tabs on potentially volatile conditions around the world. New cognitive business and machine learning methodologies, designed to help companies collect, visualize and analyze data from wide-ranging sources, are viewed as central to these efforts.

Chinese Professionals Arrive at NJIT for a Spring Semester of Study
They were newly arrived from China for a semester-long, customized, professional development program at NJIT, and for most of them the journey marked their first time coming to the United States. While some of the 10 employees from the China Triumph International Engineering Company, Ltd. (CTIEC) were still recovering from jet lag, all were happy to be settling in at the university, as evidenced during an official welcome luncheon held Feb. 14.

Walsh, Gibbs Selected to ASUN All-Academic Team
NJIT junior Reilly Walsh and sophomore Shyquan Gibbs have been named to the 2018 ASUN All-Academic Team, as announced by conference officials Saturday. Walsh, the only member on the eight-player list with a 4.0 GPA, was also one of just four unanimous selections. This marks the second-consecutive selection for Walsh, who became the first-ever Highlander to be selected to the ASUN All-Academic Team a season ago. It also marks a first-time selection for Gibbs, who was the 2016 Valedictorian at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City.

5 NJIT Students Selected as 2018 Governor's STEM Scholars
Five NJIT students — Ivan Mitevski, Kiera Nissen, Omar Qari, Priya Rajbabu and Michael Vitti — have been named 2018 Governor’s STEM Scholars, an honor that is providing them with unique opportunities to learn from and network with New Jersey STEM professionals, research organizations, academic institutions and state policymakers. They join their fellow scholars from universities, high schools and academies throughout New Jersey in attending STEM conferences and field trips, and in participating in a team-based research project.

ROI-NJ Names President Bloom, NJIT Execs Most Influential People in New Jersey Business
ROI-NJ, a publication that reports on New Jersey economic news, released its “ROI Influencers Power List” for 2018. Featured on the list are Joel S. Bloom, NJIT’s president; Donald Sebastian, president of New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), an NJIT Corporation; and Tom Gregorio, NJII’s senior executive director, Healthcare Delivery Systems iLab.

Makerspace Debut: A Custom-Designed Instrument for Energy Exploration
There is a potentially limitless supply of renewable, carbon-free energy within the Earth’s crust if we could only permeate the thick layers of crystalline rock that sit over it, barring access. So far, success in harnessing the Earth’s own heat has been mostly limited to tapping the boiling hot water that bubbles up with little prompting close to the surface.

NJIT Receives Another Safe Campus Ranking
The National Council for Home Safety and Security, a trade association of home security professionals that advocates for safe communities and home safety, ranks NJIT among the Top 100 Safest College Campuses in America. The university joins five other Garden State institutions of higher education in receiving this honor.

Movement Towards March Madness Starts Monday
The No. 4 seeded NJIT Highlanders (14-15, 7-7 ASUN) will host the No. 5 seeded North Florida Ospreys (13-18, 7-7 ASUN) in the ASUN Quarterfinals Monday night at the state-of-the art Wellness and Events Center (WEC) in Newark. The Highlanders closed the regular season with a 76-67 victory at USC Upstate Thursday, while North Florida dropped an 86-81 decision at Jacksonville. NJIT is 0-2 all-time in ASUN Tournament contests after falling in the quarterfinals to No. 7 seed Stetson in 2015-16 and No. 2 seed Lipscomb in 2016-17.

NJIT Controls Destiny for Tourney Home Game
With one game remaining in the 2017-18 regular season, the NJIT men's basketball team has tons riding on its finale at USC Upstate (7-23, 2-11) on Thursday night in Spartanburg, S.C. One thing is certain regardless of the outcome at the Hodge Center: The Highlanders (13-15, 6-7) will be playing either Jacksonville University (13-17, 7-6) or University of North Florida (13-17, 7-6) in the Quarterfinals. Highlanders Post Seven Wins in Inaugural Meet in Wellness and Events Center
The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams combined for seven wins in the inaugural meet inside the new Wellness and Events Center on Sunday. The NJIT men extended its win streak to 17 matches, hosting the MACFA B vs. C Invitational, registering wins over William & Mary (24-3), Navy (26-1), John Hopkins (17-10) and Lafayette (17-10). The women hosted the NJIT Invitational in conjunction with the men, snapping a 13-match losing streak, posting three wins against William & Mary (19-8), Army (19-8) and Navy (22-5).
