NJIT Launches Program to Expand Access to M.S. Degrees in Computing
NJIT, one of the nation’s leading public technological universities, will offer a new program this fall that puts students on the fast track to earn a master’s degree in one of six graduate programs offered by the Department of Computer Science at Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC).
Designed for working professionals and college graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree in the mathematical sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences or engineering, the “Fast Track to Computing” program offers access to the following graduate computing degree programs:
Master of Science in Computer Science
Master of Science in Data Science
Master of Science in Cybersecurity & Privacy
Master of Science in Software Engineering
Master of Science in Computing and Business
Master of Science in Bioinformatics
The program quickly prepares the student for these programs through four critical courses, each worth three credits. Upon completion of these courses —with a grade of B or better — students may continue to the MS program of their choice.
Although computer science reigns as one of the most rewarding fields of the 21st century, reportedly there will be 1 million more computing jobs than employees to fill them in the next 10 years. To address the nation’s shortage of qualified computing professionals and impart the advanced skills in such high demand today, NJIT is developing programs such as “Fast Track to Computing” to allow professionals to migrate toward the computing field for which the demand only continues to increase.
By expanding access to NJIT’s renowned Ying Wu College of Computing, which is home to the largest computing program among all research universities in the greater New York City area, the “Fast Track to Computing” program provides the training necessary to boost the employment opportunities and earning potential of non-computing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professionals and college graduates looking to enhance their job search, secure employment and advance their careers in high-growth fields, such as data science, cybersecurity, mobile computing and software development.
“We prepare our graduates with theoretical foundations and practical knowledge in computer science to hit the ground running on their first day on the job and be adaptable to evolving technologies and requirements,” said Cristian Borcea, computer science professor and chair of YWCC’s computer science department. “With a high-quality computer science education, our graduates make big strides in their careers while maintaining job security.”
Recent computer science graduates have landed exciting positions at prominent technology companies, research institutions, corporations and government agencies such as Apple, Google, Amazon, UPS, Bank of America and the Department of Homeland Security. The burgeoning tech sector in New Jersey and New York City gobbles up the graduates as fast as they are produced.
