Online dating has become a way of life for folks looking for love in the freewheeling, tap-and-swipe culture that dominates the 21st century. According to the Pew Research Center, online dating sites or mobile dating app usage by 18-to 24-year-olds has increased nearly threefold since 2013, while usage by 55-to 64-year-olds has doubled.

From Cells to Science and Society — Kevin Belfield is Engaged Across a Broad Spectrum of Research
As a researcher, Kevin Belfield is working at the forefront of medical innovation to develop a minimally invasive imaging technique that could revolutionize how wound healing and the growth of cancerous tissue are monitored. A professor in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science, Belfield is also dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA), and in this role he is helping to build the success of programs that span a very broad spectrum of research and education at NJIT.

An Explorer on the Frontier of Behavior
Associate Professor Eric Fortune, a member of the Department of Biological Sciences since 2012, is an explorer whose research is focused on finding answers to questions at the frontiers of human physiology and behavior. In his Central King Building laboratory, with the assistance of undergraduate and graduate students, Fortune is challenging the unknowns of how the brain uses sensory information to control behavior. It’s a search that has also taken him far from the NJIT campus, to wilderness locations in South America.

What the Ocean Says — Research for National Defense, Environmental Insight
Since coming to NJIT in 1994, Professor Eliza Michalopoulou has been listening to the world’s oceans, researching how new knowledge about sound propagation in the marine environment can enhance the U.S. Navy’s antisubmarine defenses. Valeria Barra charted an unusual course from Siena, Italy to Newark, New Jersey and now onward for an internship program in Emeryville, Calif. at a one-time Steve Jobs startup you may have heard of - Pixar Animation Studios. Pixar has won eight Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature—“Inside Out,” “Brave,” “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “WALL-E,” “Up” and “Toy Story 3” have all taken home an Oscar.

Book Smarts: Christopher Domey '16
For Christopher Domey ’16, the decision to attend NJIT was an easy one. His brother was already enrolled as a student and the campus was close to home, thereby allowing him to stay in contact with friends and family. “In order to be sure I had a private space where I could get away from the distractions at home, I made sure to live on campus for my first three years of NJIT,” Domey said. “This proved to be invaluable.”

William V. Rapp wins Chicago Fed Award for Best GDP Forecast
William V. Rapp, Henry J. Leir Professor of International Trade and Business at NJIT's Martin Tuchman School of Management, received an award from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for best GDP forecast as well as in the categories of oil prices and housing starts. "From my perspective, the most amazing thing is not only winning the award, but that my forecast was based largely on intuition and a calculator and yet I beat those using sophisticated computer models and large data sets," Rapp noted.

New Jersey Universities are Pioneers in Drone Technology
The New Jersey State House in Trenton was the rallying point for many of the top researchers in Drone and UAV innovation (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) with representatives from NJIT, Rutgers, Stockton, Rowan, and Stevens Institute of Technology. The forum was sponsored by the New Jersey Senate Democrats with Senate President Steve Sweeney, Senator Jim Whelan, Senator Jeff Van Drew, and Senator Sandra Cunningham in attendance. NJIT alum Senator Paul Sarlo was also instrumental in organizing the forum and supporting the ongoing research activities.

From Combustion to Consumption — Researching the Atmospheric Mystery of Mercury
Mercury: We know that substantial amounts of this highly toxic element are released into the atmosphere through the burning of coal and petroleum for fuel and the incineration of our civilization’s garbage. We also know that mercury entering the atmosphere can eventually find its way into the soil and, especially, the world’s oceans, where it poses a threat to health by accumulating in many species of fish that we eat.

Tim Daudelin Follows a Tradition of Family Excellence at NJIT
Tim Daudelin graduated in May with a degree in biology and a ticket to the Ivy League: He has been accepted at Columbia University’s Dental School. Daudelin, an Albert Dorman Honors College grad who finished with a 3.98 GPA, considered attending medical school but chose dental school instead since "dentistry has more of an artistic element," he says
