IBM Boot Camp Is a 'Shoe-in' for Student Success
Last fall NJIT entered into a first-of-its-kind partnership with IBM Global University Programs to deliver digital technologies and education to NJIT students. Not only is NJIT the first university in the country to adopt the venerable technology corporation’s IBM Skills Academy, it also is the only one in North America to do so.

Fulbright Winner Brendan Dente Heads Off This Summer for a Two-Year Stint in the Netherlands
Brendan Dente ’18, a chemical engineer with a talent for product design and a yen for travel, has won a Fulbright scholarship to spend the next two years earning a master’s degree at one of Europe’s major STEM hubs, the Technological University of Delft (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. He intends to spend his time there “delving deeply into molecular engineering,” a subject that focuses on the arrangement of molecules in chemical compounds in order to improve products.

Tara Alvarez is Named a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering
Tara Alvarez, a professor of biomedical engineering who studies the links between visual disorders and the brain and develops novel devices to identify and treat them, has been named a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Alvarez joined approximately 150 new fellows, who represent the top 2 percent of the medical and biological engineering community, at an induction ceremony this past weekend at AIMBE’s 2018 annual meeting at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Volunteerism is a mainstay at NJIT, with students and faculty engaged in a range of initiatives to better the community. Such efforts, amounting to more than 59,000 hours of community service over the past year alone, have been recognized both nationally and locally.

Justin and Lauran Tuck Share Unique Journey to Raise Newark Student Opportunity
Not long after his arrival to the New York Giants in 2005, Justin Tuck and his wife, Lauran, founded Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy to bring greater educational and career opportunities to youth in the New York City metro-area.

Fostering a Vision for The Weiss-Aug Group: Dieter Weissenrieder '76
Dieter Weissenrieder emigrated from Germany in 1960 as a tool and die maker to work for his uncle’s tooling business. He quickly became the manager of the company, and after working for the family business for 10 years, the company was sold to a large firm. He then founded Weiss-Aug in 1972 with his partner, Kurt Augustin, while pursuing his industrial engineering degree at NJIT.

Piotr Namiotko Earns EIVA Offensive Player of the Week
NJIT sophomore Piotr Namiotko has been selected EIVA Offensive Player of the Week for his performance last week EIVA Coordinator Brian Snow announced. Namiotko earns his first EIVA Offensive Player of the Week award after recording 60 kills while hitting .300 in 13 sets, averaging 4.62 kills per set. NJIT's Justin Etts Drives in Game-Winning Run in Ninth; Highlanders Tops No. 22 FGCU
NJIT junior Justin Etts drove in the game-winning run as visiting NJIT topped No. 22 FGCU, 4-3, to conclude the three-game ASUN Conference series at Swanson Stadium Sunday afternoon. NJIT (12-12, 2-4 ASUN) scored single runs late in the game, delivering runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, handing FGCU (24-7, 2-1 ASUN) its first loss in ASUN Conference action. Prudential/NJIT Connection Group Hosts Inaugural Event for Alumni
More than 75 NJIT alumni employed at Prudential gathered on April 5 for the inaugural event of the Prudential/NJIT Connection group, which seeks to provide the company’s employees and NJIT alumni with a platform for internal networking and the opportunity to participate in developments across Prudential, NJIT, and the City of Newark. The newly formed organization will support this through a focus on recruiting, professional development, mentorship and community engagement with the common goal to expand the mutually beneficial relationship between Prudential and NJIT.

NJIT Makerspace to Host 3D-Printed Prosthetics Build-a-Thon May 5
Makerspace at NJIT, a training-focused, rapid prototyping facility, will host an event to build and assemble hand prosthetics to help children and young adults in need. The 10,000-square-foot space operates equipment ranging from small 3D printers to large industrial machining centers, such as precision measurement and laser cutting machines.

Eight-Year-Old Gavin Brady Signs with NJIT Men's Lacrosse
Eight-year-old Gavin Brady, from Pompton Plains, became the newest addition to the NJIT men's lacrosse team roster with the help of Friends of Jaclyn Foundation held at the Wellness and Events Center Wednesday afternoon. Friends of Jaclyn aims to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers by pairing them with local team, clubs and community groups.

On April 3, Newark-area high school students and teachers arrived at NJIT in anticipation of meeting two-time Super Bowl champion and New York Giants Hall of Fame inductee, Justin Tuck. Justin and Lauran Tuck, co-founders of the nonprofit Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy, appeared as special guest speakers at this year’s 2018 Junior Achievement (JA) Career Success® Workshop College Series to help promote career development among New Jersey’s high school learners.

New Jersey's K-20 Education Collaborative Meets at First-Ever "Cradle to Career" Summit
In March, NJIT staged the first-ever “CLEAR: Cradle to Career” (C3 2018) Summit, aimed at “fostering a larger networked community of innovative and dedicated teachers, leaders, faculty researchers and students of all ages”. The summit — co-hosted by NJIT’s statewide K-20 Collaborative for Leadership, Education, and Assessment Research (CLEAR) — brought together an expansive audience of NJIT students, faculty and staff; K-12 educators and leaders; and public and private organizations throughout the state.

Come Meet NJIT's Undergraduate Inventors
Innovation Day is a showcase of cutting-edge, student-led research that includes inventions that improve lives, novel business ideas, computer games and fundamental scientific research. This year, nearly three dozen student projects – from mapping applications for the transportation industry, to human control interfaces for surrogate robots, to novel drugs that target cholesterol – will be on display in the Campus Center on April 10.
