Wright Nets Pair of Goals in Win Over Kennesaw State; Highlanders Move Into First Place in ASUN
Freshman Fiona Wright netted a pair of goals in the Highlanders' 2-1 victory over visiting Kennesaw State in ASUN Conference action at Kean University East Campus Facility. NJIT, winners of its last five-out-of-six contests, improves to 5-2 in the ASUN, 11-4-1 overall while the Owls move to 5-2 in the league, 12-4-1 overall. With the win, the Highlanders which clinched its first-ever postseason appearance in the ASUN Conference, moved into the top spot in the ASUN (15 points) after tallying three points in the win over the Owls.

Rajesh Davé, a problem-driven inventor whose groundbreaking methods for re-engineering tiny particles have fueled advances in such diverse areas as weapons safety and drug delivery systems, has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Started From The Bottom, Now She's Here: An Alumna's Journey to CEO
DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL Toni Vasquez-Shawan ’10 was in the sixth grade when she started her architecture career as a telephone receptionist at T.I. Vasquez Architects & Planners, Inc. (TVAP), a Manila-based architecture firm founded in 1993 by her father Topy Vasquez. The design bug bit her while accompanying Topy on a site visit. After graduating from the University of Santo Tomas in 2007 with a B.S. in architecture, she acquired a full-time position at TVAP, working under the supervision of a project architect.

Sarnoff Symposium Comes to NJIT
Now in its 39th year, the IEEE Sarnoff Symposium is the premier forum in telecom and related topics for researchers, engineers and business executives in the Northeast. “It has a long history as a place where industry leaders can share their insights with academia on state-of-the-art research, where the industry is going and the challenges they face,” said Grace (Guiling) Wang, co-chair of this year’s symposium and professor of computer science at NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC).

TEDxNJIT Event on November 8
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will host a TEDxNJIT event Nov. 8, 2018 in the Jim Wise Theatre on the NJIT campus and via an accompanying live simulcast available to viewers worldwide. The independently organized event, licensed by TED, is themed “ReFraming” and will feature leaders from business, academia and the arts addressing a range of topics.

NJIT Picks Up First ASUN Conference Win; Posts 3-2 Come-From-Behind Victory at Jacksonville
NJIT picked up its first ASUN Conference win of the 2018 season in the Highlanders, 3-2, come-from-behind victory at Jacksonville Saturday evening at Swisher Gymnasium. NJIT (1-5 ASUN, 3-17 overall) snaps a three-match skid in the win at Jacksonville while Jacksonville moves to 1-5 in the ASUN, 2-16 overall. Trailing, 2-0, the Highlanders recorded a 25-21 win in the third set and 25-17 victory in the fourth to force a fifth and deciding set. NJIT secured the win with a 15-12 win in the fifth set. Jacksonville won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-19.

Building a Landscape for the Future: N.J. Leaders Convene for Black Issues Convention
On Oct. 4 and 5, leaders from across New Jersey assembled on the campus of NJIT for the 36th Black Leadership Conference sponsored by the New Jersey Black Issues Convention (NJBIC), an organization founded in 1983 to establish a network of communication and cooperation among predominantly Black organizations in New Jersey. New Jersey Governor Philip Murphy, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and NJIT President Joel S. Bloom were among those who spoke on the importance and impact that the NJBIC has on critical issues affecting the community, especially economic issues.

2018 Fall Career Fair Connects Jobseekers and Employers With a "Handshake"
NJIT’s 2018 Fall Career Fair, held Sept. 26 at the university’s Wellness and Events Center, welcomed 215 employers primed to recruit applicants for full-time positions, internships and co-ops. It also embraced a new career services management platform called Handshake, designed to both optimize the job search experience for students and enable employers to easily reach candidates nationwide.

A Neurobiologist, a Solar Physicist and a Chemical Engineer Are Awarded for Research Excellence
Faced with a formidable list of nominees for the annual Excellence in Research Prize and Medal, the Board of Overseers opted this year for its own brand of novelty and innovation: the prize committee picked three. The sector-spanning winners, all at the forefront of their fields, included a solar physicist, a chemical engineer and a neurobiologist.

NJIT to Host 36th Annual Black Leadership Conference Oct. 4 – 5
The New Jersey Black Issues Convention (NJBIC) will convene in the Campus Center Ballrooms on the NJIT campus to hold its 36th Annual Black Leadership Conference Oct. 4 – 5 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (registration begins at 7 a.m. on both days). Organized in 1983 to establish a network of communication and cooperation among predominantly Black organizations in New Jersey, NJBIC sponsors the conference to discuss the critical issues affecting the community, public policy recommendations that can be adopted and a plan of decisive action with strategies for implementation.

Women's Soccer Ties School Record For Wins in 4-0 Victory Over Jacksonville
The NJIT women's soccer team tied the school-record for wins, earning its ninth win, a 4-0 shutout victory at Jacksonville Sunday afternoon in ASUN Conference action at Southern Oaks Stadium. NJIT, which has won the last three consecutive matches and last five-out-of-six, improves to 9-3-1 and 3-1 in the ASUN while the Dolphins drop to 1-10-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play The nine overall wins and seven shutouts thus far in 2018 tie the school record, which was set in 2017 under head coach Ally Nick.

Newly-Discovered Bacterium Rids Problematic Pair of Toxic Groundwater Contaminants
Known as a chemical manufacturing by-product of many cosmetics and home cleaning products, the industrial solvent 1,4-Dioxane is now considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to be an “emerging contaminant” and “likely human carcinogen” that can be found at thousands of groundwater sites nationally — potentially representing a multi-billion dollar environmental remediation challenge.
