Researchers Find Ethical Risks Where Mixed-Reality Gaming Meets AI
Monday, November 6, 2023
Researchers at NJIT and Universidad Carlos III of Madrid wanted to know if mixed-reality games could be improved by handing control to artificial intelligence software in the form of conversational language applications — it turns out they can, but the results may put players in danger. The question stems from an annual Halloween tradition of serious-yet-silly experiments by Assistant Professor Niccolo Pescetelli, of NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts humanities department, researcher Manuel Cebrian of Carlos III de Madrid’s statistics department and Santander Big Data Institute,...

Monday, November 6, 2023
Eight Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) students have recently begun their journey as members of the elite CyberCorps® Scholarship for Service (SFS) Program during fall 2023 through the NJIT Secure Computing Initiative (SCI), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Each recipient has been awarded a scholarship covering full tuition and fees for up to three years beginning as a junior, senior or first year master’s student towards a master's degree in either Cybersecurity and Privacy or IT Administration and Security, along with an annual $27,000 – $37,000 stipend and...
Ying Wu College of Computing Makes NJIT History with Highest Fall Enrollment
Wednesday, October 18, 2023
Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) has made history at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Enrollment at YWCC has jumped 12% over the previous record-breaking year to 4,641 students, and now accounts for 37% of the total enrollment at NJIT. Graduate and undergraduate enrollment each rose equally by 12% for the fall semester. Likewise, female representation has also grown along with the college. Women now account for 23% of the YWCC student body. A 93% retention rate, the second highest at NJIT, and an improvement over last year, has also positively influenced the total enrollment...

They will begin their tenure as educators and researchers during a time of unprecedented growth for the college and NJIT, particularly in the area of enrollment, with a total of 4,581 YWCC students across all degrees entering the university for the fall semester. This accounts for 35% of NJIT total enrollment and marks an approximate 11% increase over the previous record-breaking year. All...
Annual NJIT GirlHacks Competition Goes into Space, and Beyond
Monday, October 2, 2023
LunaTech, a web application where players can learn about space from a cartoon cat and send their professors into orbit, won first place in GirlHacks 2023 at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The application is the brainchild of Fizah Fahad, Adrianna Rust and Ayushi Sangoi, who combined to win a $1,500 cash prize for their efforts. The trio coded in CSS, JavaScript, Python and a NASA programming interface. LunaTech was one of 31 submitted projects, built by approximately 130 participants, all working on site from the Campus Center ballroom, said event director Shaili Soni, president...
Data Science Techniques Help Evaluate COVID's Impact on Mental Health
Friday, September 22, 2023
In case of another pandemic, authorities might only have a 28-day window to connect vulnerable populations to mental health providers before it’s too late to prevent long-term concerns, according to new research assisted by a data science expert at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The research employed five types of natural-language processing and statistical methods to evaluate more than 350,000 posts in the Reddit subcommunities r/Anxiety and r/Depression, spanning the years 2019-2022, in response to the worldwide dire news and eventual waning of COVID. NJIT Associate Professor Hai...

New Jersey Institute of Technology’s rise in national rankings continues, with U.S. News & World Report placing NJIT No. 86 among national universities for 2024 — a jump of 11 rungs from 2023. The latest ranking is indicative of a consistent trend over the past four years — as NJIT climbed from 118 to 103 to 97 and now 86 — and supports the findings of other publications that rate U.S. universities, including Money and The Wall Street Journal, which placed NJIT as the second-highest ranked public institution nationally. In key areas like student social mobility and...
Data Science Meets Ironbound Street Shrines in NJIT Undergrad Summer Research
Monday, September 11, 2023
Computer science and religion are rarely thought of together as connected research areas, but it’s going well for NJIT student Fernando Mantilla, who is performing a geospatial analysis of more than 200 street shrines in Newark’s historic Ironbound neighborhood. The shrines are tributes to important figures in Catholicism, generally made from painted tiles but sometimes in the form of statues, canvas paintings or photographs. They are located in the windows and entryways of homes and small businesses. They are common in ancient cities like Rome, but also in Catholic communities throughout...

Monday, August 21, 2023
Stuti Mohan, a senior biomedical engineering student, was the winner of the top Dr. James F. Stevenson Innovation Award at the 2023 Undergraduate Summer Research and Innovation (URI) Symposium at NJIT. Her project sought to identify a non-invasive yet precise method to diagnose the tapping foot of a subject. Mohan’s research area in the Sensorimotor Quantification and Rehabilitation Lab (SQRL) is the ongoing pursuit of improving concussion management. “Concussion management can be a pretty subjective process. We are leveraging objective approaches like sensorimotor quantification...
