Ying Wu College of Computing Makes NJIT History with Highest Fall Enrollment
Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) has made history at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Enrollment at YWCC has jumped 12% over the previous record-breaking year to 4,641 students, and now accounts for 37% of the total enrollment at NJIT.
Graduate and undergraduate enrollment each rose equally by 12% for the fall semester. Likewise, female representation has also grown along with the college. Women now account for 23% of the YWCC student body. A 93% retention rate, the second highest at NJIT, and an improvement over last year, has also positively influenced the total enrollment experienced this fall.
This increase in enrollment will lead to even more NJIT computing graduates in the future. YWCC traditionally graduates an average of 1,000 computing professionals per year. This figure is already above any other university in the tri-state area, and the May ceremony saw a total of 1,103 students awarded degrees at all levels.
YWCC is one of the few colleges in the U.S. that is dedicated entirely to computing and is the largest and most comprehensive in the region. It emphasizes hands-on, practical training through a broad array of programs in leading-edge areas of computer science, cybersecurity, information systems, information technology, and rapidly advancing fields of data science, including a new M.S. in Artificial Intelligence, which began as of fall 2023.
The college’s practice-based approach gives graduates a competitive edge in helping to solve industry’s most pressing global issues. The vast majority will find their first job within six months of graduation or are hired directly from capstone projects, internships or co-op experiences.
YWCC alumni comprise 30% of the computing professionals in New Jersey and many work at major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon, who have recently established a presence in the region, but also in the entire spectrum of financial, pharmaceutical, energy, telecom and transportation companies that dots the local and national landscape.
Interim Dean Ali Mili said, “Much of the credit for this sustained growth is owed to the bold THINK-BIG vision of my predecessor, Dean Gotsman; it was made possible by broadening the portfolio of degree programs that we offer, our course modalities, and the reach of our promotion and outreach campaigns. It is incumbent on us today to continue this growth, not only in number of students, but also in the admission standards that our students must meet; in due course, this will enhance a broad range of key performance indicators for our college.”
Ying Wu College of Computing offers programs on-campus at its main Newark location, its new graduate extension in Jersey City, and online.
