2017 at NJIT: A Look Back

Science Olympiad for Middle and High School Students Returns to NJIT for the 12th Consecutive Year
On Jan. 12, 2018, NJIT will make science competitive yet fun when it hosts the 2018 New Jersey Regional Science Olympiad (NJSO), part of a national science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition. The university will welcome to the event nearly 700 middle and high school students who possess both great interest in STEM fields and strong academic achievements. NJIT has hosted the regional gathering since 2007.

Students Search for Insights into the Brain and Behavior
Learning is very much a hands-on experience for Nicole Andanar, Hannah Gattuso, Yasmine Ghattas and David Liptsyn, NJIT undergraduates enrolled in Albert Dorman Honors College who are working with Associate Professor Eric Fortune, Department of Biological Sciences, to explore the unknowns of how the brain uses sensory information to influence behavior.

Stone Sculptures Find a New Home
For Daniel A. Henderson '11 HON, whose art explores the viral allure of technology and its unintended consequences, the relocation of three of his sculptures to the ground floor of NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute represents a homecoming of sorts. “Fossil Fuel” (2009), “Yellowstone” (2009) and “Premo” (2011) are now situated in an expansive new venue that allows spectators to fully appreciate the scope and grandeur of his work.

They build bridges and tunnels, measure two millimeters long, and are unwelcome at picnics. Ants, one of nature’s most minuscule and fascinating creatures, are the subject of a children’s book by civil engineer Harry N. Tuvel P.E., P.P.’74, ’79.

She's an Award-Winning Digital Designer: Meet Rachel Corres
Rachel Corres recently won the School of Art + Design Medal. Each year, the School gives the medal to a graduating senior who combines academic achievement with design excellence. Rachel, who graduated in May with a degree in Digital Design, had many accomplishments at NJIT that lead up to her winning the above medal.. For two years in a row, she won the Design Award for her major. She won first place in a student design competition sponsored by the Virtual Academic Library Environment and was awarded the 2012 Art + Design Director's Scholarship.

Putting Students Closer to Explosive Solar Events
NJIT has a long-established reputation as a leader in researching phenomena originating on the star closest to Earth — the Sun. NJIT’s optical telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory and radio telescope array at Owens Valley, both in California, have greatly expanded our understanding of solar events that periodically impact our home planet, events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that can disrupt terrestrial communications and power infrastructure in addition to other effects.

Buildings and Meanings — Interpreting Cultural Expression in Architecture Distinguished Professor Zeynep Çelik is an internationally honored interpreter — of buildings. Çelik, who has a joint appointment in NJIT’s New Jersey School of Architecture and the Department of History, is an architectural historian whose career has been dedicated to interpreting the meanings buildings communicate about the cultures that create them.

The Grades Are In: Two Engineering Professors Earn an A+ for Teaching
There are top-notch teachers who expertly transmit what they know in class. But more influential still are the mentors who immerse their students so thoroughly in their subject matter they feel like they’ve lived it. Those experiences can be life-changing. Ronald Rockland, chairman of NJIT’s Department of Engineering Technology, and John Wiggins, a senior lecturer in the department and coordinator of the Construction Engineering Technology and Construction Management Technology programs, clearly belong to the latter category.
