Silver Star Status Awarded to NJIT's National Society of Collegiate Scholars Chapter
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), the only honor society to recognize outstanding academic achievement among first- and second-year college students, has designated the chapter at NJIT as a Silver Star Chapter for the 2017-2018 academic year. The acknowledgement distinguishes the chapter among the more than 320 NSCS chapters throughout the country, and stems from its leadership in implementing engaging, student-centered events both on campus and in the community.
During the past year, the chapter participated in NSCS’ PACE (Planning to Achieve Collegiate Excellence) initiative, which focuses on mentoring, assemblies and preparation for college. Accordingly, chapter members ran After School All Stars programs to tutor students at three Newark middle schools; NJIT NSCS officers returned to their high schools to talk to students about the college process and their own college experiences; and Dorman Scholars hosted the annual NJIT Splash, a one-day enrichment program of both academic and nonacademic classes taught by NJIT students that aims to get high schoolers excited about learning and going to college. The chapter also took part in NSCS’ Integrity Week to emphasize academic, professional, wellness (physical and mental), personal character and social integrity.
“The chapter has truly proven their commitment to the ideals that NSCS holds dear. … Their exceptional work is not only a credit to them as a chapter, but as students of NJIT as well,” wrote NSCS Founder Stephen E. Loflin in the award notification letter.
The university’s Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) supports the NSCS chapter with funding and staff — Assistant Dean for Enrollment Lois Chipepo and Assistant Dean for Academics Dawn Klimovich serve as advisers. Next month, the chapter will begin its eighth year at NJIT and induct new members, who must carry a 3.4 grade-point average or higher and rank in the top 20 percent of their college class. More than 400 Dorman Scholars have been inducted into NSCS to date.
“Our scholars are engaged in the NSCS chapter, but it extends beyond our Honors College and is part of our mission to help all NJIT students excel,” said ADHC Dean Louis Hamilton.
