Playing His Cards Right: Kalpesh G. Kapadia M.S. '97
When he was 22 years old, Kalpesh G. Kapadia immigrated to the United States from Bombay, India. A commuter student who lived in Kearny, Kapadia attended NJIT on a full scholarship, with cooperative work at the pharmaceutical company Schering-Plough. His scholarship also entailed teaching students at Eastside High in Tenafly about computers.

NJIT to Establish New Institute for Data Science
Continuing its mission to lead in computing technologies, NJIT announced today that it will establish a new Institute for Data Science, focusing on cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and development in all areas pertinent to digital data. The institute will bring existing research centers in big data, medical informatics and cybersecurity together with new research centers in data analytics and artificial intelligence, cutting across all NJIT colleges and schools, and conduct both basic and applied research.

Alumni Give in Record Numbers, Surpass Giving Rate Goal for 2018-19
During the fiscal year that ended last week on June 30, a record number of NJIT alumni made a gift in support of their alma mater. These donations from alumni pushed NJIT’s alumni giving rate to 10.3% — more than double the national average for public universities. This newly-achieved alumni giving rate will have a positive impact on NJIT’s ranking in U.S. News and World Report, which uses this metric in its annual evaluation of colleges and universities.

NJIT, Penn College Awarded $8M to Develop Manufacturing Apprenticeship Programs
The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $7,996,530 grant to New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Pennsylvania College of Technology to develop industry-driven strategies for apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing fields. The funding is part of the U.S. Department of Labor's awarding of $183.8 million in grants to 23 academic institutions and consortia nationwide. The ultimate aim is to satisfy industry's enormous demand for trained American workers.

MIP Studio Earns Honorable Mention in 2019 Schindler Global Award
A group of students in the College of Architecture and Design’s (CoAD) Master of Infrastructure Planning (MIP) studio took home first honorable mention and a $7,500 prize at the Schindler Global Award (SGA) in Mumbai, India May 10.

NJIT Students Part of Elite CyberCorps Program
NJIT graduate Theresa Wagner knew she wanted to work for the federal government. After switching her major a few times while at NJIT, she found her path as an undergraduate student studying information technology. It was while studying IT that she learned of a program that would help her finish her undergraduate degree, pick up a master’s degree and land her first job out of college at the U.S. Department of State.

Mayor's Honors Scholars Program Announces Recipients of Three Scholarship Awards
NJIT President Joel S. Bloom and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka officially announced the three students selected as Mayor’s Honors Scholars from the high school class of 2019 on June 28, 2019 in NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC). In his introductory remarks, Bloom described how students enrolled at the ADHC have a wealth of opportunities to optimize their own educational path. “You have a palette here that you can fill however you want to proceed,” he said.

NJIT Plays Integral Role in 1st Annual ExploreNJ Conference for Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
The focus of the event was why New Jersey is the best place for entrepreneurs and businesses in the U.S., as well for foreign firms seeking to enter the U.S. market, to invest in and grow their businesses. And the interest in doing so was indeed high, with upward of 150 people from over 40 industries — from accounting and architecture, to insurance and investment, to manufacturing and marketing and more — attending the inaugural ExploreNJ conference.

Governor Murphy Discusses Vision for Strengthening New Jersey's Innovation Ecosystem
Governor Phil Murphy discussed his vision for tax incentives reform and growing New Jersey’s economy on June 24, 2019, in NJIT’s Makerspace. In his introductory remarks, NJIT President Joel S. Bloom cited the university’s focus on economic development, as evidenced by Makerspace and the establishment of the New Jersey Innovation Institute in 2014. “We now have a STEM governor and jobs for all across the continuum,” said Bloom. “We need the workforce and the facilities.”

“At Home in Newark” tells the stories of how LGBTQ residents of Newark have claimed space for themselves in bars, balls, houses of worship, street corners, community centers and artistic venues in the face of poverty, violence, illness, racism and discrimination. Leveling-Up Ethical Research Through Smartphone Gaming
As lead engineer of a self-driving car project, you are tasked with teaching the AI to drive. You realize that the AI may have to make a decision between putting the car’s occupants at risk or prioritizing the safety of those outside the car. What do you do? The above scenario, adapted from a real-life case, is part of a game called “Apperception”, a smartphone-based educational game developed by a team of ethics researchers led by Britt Holbrook, assistant professor of philosophy at NJIT.

NJIT Conducts the Largest-Ever Simulation of the Deepwater Horizon Spill
In a 600-ft.-long saltwater wave tank on the coast of New Jersey, a team of NJIT researchers is conducting the largest-ever simulation of the Deepwater Horizon spill to determine more precisely where hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil dispersed following the drilling rig’s explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

Pegged at Six as an Engineer, Jakob Guido Grabs His 'Destiny' With Gusto
Jakob Guido’s engineering talent manifested at quite a young age. In kindergarten, he was photographed playing with blocks behind a sign that read: “Future Engineer.” Months later, his first-grade science teacher observed his advanced organizational abilities and pronounced: “You’re going to be an engineer.” Fast forward 15 years, and Guido, a rising senior majoring in civil engineering, has pursued his seeming destiny with boundless energy, formidable skills and enviable success, punctuating those early predictions with an exclamation point.

Men's Volleyball Duo to Represent Spanish National Team at 2019 CEV European Golden League
NJIT men's volleyball rising junior Alvaro Gimeno and incoming freshman Martin de Chavarria will represent the Spanish National Team at the 2019 CEV European Golden League. Both Gimeno and Chavarria are two of the youngest players on the 22-person Spanish roster for the European Golden League.

Hearst Magazines Partners with NJIT for Data Science and Analytics Training
Media giant Hearst Magazines is the latest company to partner with the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) to train its employees in the fast-growing area of data science. Called “Hearst Data University” by the company, Hearst employees are taking part in on-site training led by NJIT professors. The courses are designed specifically for Hearst Magazines to help employees glean insights from Hearst’s proprietary information to develop a deeper connection with its audience and customers.
