Composting and WEC Solar Panels to Lead Campus Sustainability Efforts in 2020
A solar array atop the Wellness and Events Center, plus a food waste recycling effort, are the first two major sustainability projects underway as part of NJIT's commitment to sustainability in the recently adopted 2025 strategic plan. NJIT also recently became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, joining several other institutions in New Jersey and nationwide which are deeper into their sustainability journeys.

NJIT Hires Newark Homegrown Talent
NJIT has always been part of the fabric of Newark since it was established more than a century ago — and the ties between the two have never been stronger. In demonstrating its commitment to the city, the university became an integral partner in the comprehensive economic development strategy, “Newark 2020: Hire, Buy, Live Local,” a key component of which calls for employing more local residents.

Electric Vehicle Drivers Making the Most of 22 Chargers in NJIT Parking Garages
Electric car chargers are becoming more common here at NJIT despite a variety of cultural obstacles and engineering hurdles. There are approximately 5,600 registered drivers per semester, a few dozen of which own electric cars, and 22 chargers on campus. "The university wants to promote sustainable transportation. A main player in that realm is electric vehicles," said Rob Gjini, assistant vice president for facilities systems. Using the spaces is free and there aren't any plans to charge fees for them.

Track and Field Shines To End 2019 At Wagner Shootout
The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams put together an outstanding collective performance in their second meet of the indoor season. The Highlanders competed at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout Friday evening at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex and produced a number of standout efforts.

Scholarship-winning Student Veterans Talk Serving in the Military and Coming to NJIT
Three student veterans at NJIT were among the first to be awarded a new scholarship administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship, named for the long-serving Massachusetts congresswoman and steadfast advocate for veterans, provides up to nine months of additional post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, up to $30,000. Recipients must be enrolled in a STEM degree program or seeking a teaching certificate.

NJIT, Ocean County College Expand and Renew Transfer Agreement
A new two-year agreement between Ocean County College and New Jersey Institute of Technology allows OCC graduates to transfer directly into NJIT colleges. The agreement went into effect on October 4, 2019 and covers NJIT's College of Science and Liberal Arts; Newark College of Engineering; Martin Tuchman School of Management; and Ying Wu College of Computing.

Annual State Science Olympiad for Pre-College Students Hosted Again by NJIT
For the 14th year in a row, NJIT will host the New Jersey Science Olympiad (NJSO). The university expects upward of 700 middle and high school students on campus Jan. 6, 2020, (snow date Jan. 13) for the event, which is part of a national science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition. Participants must possess both strong academic achievements and a great interest in the STEM fields.

Juliana Yang Joins the Newest Class of Governor's STEM Scholars
To say that third-year biomedical engineering major Juliana Yang is busy is an understatement. In addition to staying on top of her course work, the Albert Dorman Honors College student is director of public relations for the university’s Student Senate, academic chair of the Beta Eta Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon and publications coordinator at the Office of Student Life.

That Time When an NJIT Grad Designed the Most Beautiful Buildings in D.C.
Well, no, not quite. He — they were all “he” then — technically graduated from Newark Technical School. But it counts. His name was Maj. George Oakley Totten, Jr. He was born in New York City on December 5, 1866, to George Oakley and Mary Elizabeth (Styles) Totten. George’s family had a long history in New York; his ancestors fought in the American Revolution and his great-grandfather founded Tottenville in Staten Island. George’s father (“senior” to his “junior”) was a New York-based businessman who became a chief real estate investor in Newark.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in collaboration with New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), an NJIT corporation, has announced it will soon offer both a Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree program and professional graduate certificate in the rapidly expanding field of cell and gene therapy.

NJIT Gets Chapter of Google Developer Student Club
NJIT now has a chapter of the Google Developer Student Club. Google formed the international organization two years ago to teach real-world information technology skills that aren't necessarily taught in college classrooms. It's also a way for the software giant to promote its products and recruit new employees.

Researchers Take Exploration of Key "Building Block" Particles Into Space
Jan. 6, 2020 -- As part of SpaceX’s CRS-19 resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS) launched Dec. 5, researchers from NASA, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and New York University (NYU) are set to begin a new scientific investigation to explore how a group of microscopic particles considered key “building blocks” for materials and products here on Earth, known as colloidal particles, behave and form in zero-gravity.

Men's Swimming and Diving Repeats As ECAC Winter Champions
For the second year in a row and the fourth time overall, the NJIT men's swimming and diving team has earned the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championship title. The Highlanders wrapped up their latest championship performance Sunday afternoon at the Nassau County Aquatic Center, defeating second-place Fairfield by 236.5 points, 2038.5 to 1802.

NJIT@JerseyCity Officially Launched with Expectation of Rapid Growth
NJIT welcomed 35 data science students to its newly opened NJIT@JerseyCity location this semester, with a goal of doubling that number in the spring and reaching 500 students in three years, Ying Wu College of Computing Dean Craig Gotsman said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony held December 5 at the new location.

Sagnik Basuray is developing a device the size of a dollar coin that will detect cancer biomarkers in patients in remission by sampling a tiny drop of blood with a dip stick. His sensor is groundbreaking not only in its simplicity, but also in its portability. It’s meant to be used at home.

It's All in the Family for Upcoming Pre-College Workshop Series
NJIT’s Center for Pre-College Programs will hold another STEM Family Workshop Series this February. CSI: NJIT On the Scene, Young Investigators Train Up in Crime Scene Forensics
Where were you the night of Nov. 26th? Anyone exiting the Summit Street parking garage that evening would have most certainly been counted among the witnesses to a brightly-lit, taped-off scene surrounding a faded-white ’98 Chevy Lumina where an investigation was underway — carried out by a special unit of NJIT’s own CSI students-in-training.
