Ingenuity of NJIT's Budding Engineers Spotlighted at NCE Showcase
Friday, February 23, 2024
Recently, the ingenuity of Newark College of Engineering’s brightest first-year students was on full display at the 2024 NCE First Year Engineering Design Showcase. Forty-two teams featured in this year’s showcase to present a wide range of innovative engineering projects originating from their fall semester introductory engineering design course — from prosthetic limbs and exoskeleton knee braces built at NJIT’s Makerspace, to traffic light clocks for improving intersections on campus, temperature-controlled fans, home security systems and more. The friendly competition, which first...
Mingrui Yin - ECE PhD Student of the Month - February 2024
Friday, February 2, 2024
Mingrui Yin is a second year Ph.D. student at UNICS Lab in the ECE Department at NJIT, advised by Dr. Tao Han. His research interests include machine learning (ML) in 5G network resource allocation, end-to-end live 3D human mixed reality (MR) systems and large language model (LLM) in mixed MR system. What would you say that could be the next big thing in your area of research? The next big thing in my research area is a totally generative world powered by large language models (LLMs) and accessible through mixed reality (MR) presents a groundbreaking vision. In such a world, LLMs could...
NJIT's Simulated Power Grid Helps Engineers Plan for Car Chargers and Wind Farms
Friday, January 26, 2024
Increases in electric car sales and offshore wind farm construction are poised to both tax and bolster the American power transmission grid, so researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology are building a grid simulator to help industry predict the effects and plan accordingly. The NJIT team is led by electrical engineering professors Marcos Netto and Philip Pong, who jointly received $500,000 of a $1.5M National Science Foundation grant. They will study system dynamics and sensors, respectively. The remaining funds will be shared among collaborators from Harvard University (control...
Deniz Najafi - ECE PhD Student of the Month - January 2024
Friday, January 5, 2024
Deniz Najafi is a first-year Ph.D. student advised by Professor Shaahin Angizi at the ACAD Lab. Her research focuses on Processing-in-Memory and In-sensor computing. Beyond the world of research, Deniz harbors a deep appreciation for literature and is an avid reader. Her affinity for the arts was previously expressed through frequent visits to live theater shows. Now, with New York's vibrant cultural scene within reach, Deniz is thrilled at the opportunity to witness stage renditions of the literary works she has passionately read. What would you say that could be the next big thing in...
Yuwei Liu - ECE PhD Student of the Month - December 2023
Tuesday, December 5, 2023
Yuwei Liu is in his fourth year of pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Under the advisement of Professor Xuan Liu in the Lab of biomedical optical imaging and sensing. His research focuses on optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT image analysis assisted by machine learning, and optically computed phase microscopy. What would you say that could be the next big thing in your area of research? In traditional imaging techniques, the information is directly derived from the measurement. In other words, what you see is what you get. In comparison, computational imaging obtains...
First-Year Engineering Majors Bond in Classrooms and Rocket Flights
Thursday, November 30, 2023
Hundreds of students in NJIT’s introductory engineering course, Fundamentals of Engineering Design 101, are having a greater shared experience during the fall 2023 semester than any incoming class since the 1990s. Back then, Newark College of Engineering began customizing the FED syllabus for each major field. Chemical engineering students may have learned more about compounding and processing, while civil engineering students learned the basics of surveying and transportation systems. Now the FED sections are unifying once more. With so many fields of engineering sharing overlapping...
Abdullah Hossain - ECE PhD Student of the Month - November 2023
Tuesday, October 31, 2023
Abdullah Hossain, born and raised in New York City, is a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering with nearly 20 journal and conference publications. His research interests are diverse including integrated sensing and communications, photonics, radio access, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), optical, and core networks. He worked as an engineer for the Consolidated Edison Company of New York and held a research position at Futurewei Technologies. For several years, he has been an Adjunct Lecturer for the City University of New York. What would you say that could be the next big thing in your...
NJIT Conference Will Explore the Tech Behind Offshore Wind Development
Wednesday, October 18, 2023
Leaders from the wind power industry, state and federal agencies, venture capital firms and higher education will gather at NJIT in December for a conference about the technology driving the development of energy from wind. The two-day conference is part of an inaugural New Jersey Wind Week, which also includes a boot camp for professionals interested in the wind industry — the second that NJIT has offered in six months. Leading the charge are Philip Pong, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, Chad Watson, renewable development manager at Public Service Electric...
Celebrating NJIT's Hispanic/Latino Employee Resource Group
Wednesday, October 4, 2023
NJIT has established employee resource groups (ERG) that meet regularly and encourage faculty and staff to connect outside of their direct working relationships. This month, NJIT is celebrating its Hispanic/Latino ERG and profiled two of its members: Vivian Lanzot, director of Community and Public Service in the Career Development Services office; and Roberto Rojas-Cessa, professor in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). What is the mission and purpose of your ERG? VL: The Hispanic/Latino ERG continues to evolve and our purpose is to...
Atilla Sivri - ECE PhD Student of the Month - October 2023
Monday, October 2, 2023
Atilla Sivri is a Ph.D. student in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He has the privilege of working under the guidance of Dr. Moshe Kam, who is his Ph.D. advisor, and the Dean of the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). His primary research focus is on refining pulse oximetry sensors. These sensors play a pivotal role in health monitoring and are often used by nurses and doctors to quickly assess the condition of a patient presented to them. He is deeply committed to enhancing the robustness and...
