Ahmad ALBarqawi is a Ph.D. student specializing in machine learning and security, with a primary focus on deepfakes. His research aims to develop robust detection models that can withstand adversarial attacks and generalize effectively across different generative models. Deepfake technology has advanced rapidly, making it crucial to build security measures that can adapt to evolving threats. By working at the intersection of AI security, adversarial robustness, and generative models, he strives to enhance the reliability of deepfake detection and prevent misuse in areas such as misinformation, fraud, and digital identity manipulation.
What would you say could be the next big thing in your area of research?
The next major advancement in this field will likely be adversarially robust deepfake detection models capable of adapting to unseen generative architectures and resisting sophisticated evasion techniques. Current detection methods often fail when exposed to new types of deepfake algorithms, and attackers are continually developing ways to bypass security measures. Future research will focus on self-learning, adaptive detection frameworks that utilize multi-modal analysis and explainability to improve resilience. Additionally, we may see regulatory and forensic advancements incorporating AI-driven authentication mechanisms for digital media.

What do you think the job market related to your area of research would be like in a few years?
The job market for AI security, particularly in deepfake detection and adversarial ML, is expected to grow significantly. With deepfakes becoming more sophisticated, industries such as cybersecurity, digital forensics, media integrity, finance, and law enforcement will actively seek experts who can design robust AI-driven defense mechanisms. Companies working on content authentication, misinformation detection, and biometric security will also prioritize hiring professionals with expertise in generative model security. Additionally, the increasing adoption of AI governance and ethical AI practices will create new opportunities in policy-making and AI auditing roles.
You have taken some courses offered by the Data Science department. How do you feel about those courses? What recommendations do you have for your fellow ECE students on taking DS courses?
The Data Science courses I have taken have been incredibly valuable in strengthening my understanding of machine learning fundamentals, statistical modeling, and real-world data-driven applications. These courses provide hands-on experience with essential tools and frameworks, which are highly applicable in both research and industry. I strongly encourage ECE students to explore DS courses, particularly those related to generative models, adversarial ML, and explainable AI, as these topics are becoming increasingly important in AI security and robustness. Understanding data science concepts can also bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation, making students more versatile in their careers.
