Celebrating NJIT's Hispanic/Latino Employee Resource Group
NJIT has established employee resource groups (ERG) that meet regularly and encourage faculty and staff to connect outside of their direct working relationships. This month, NJIT is celebrating its Hispanic/Latino ERG and profiled two of its members: Vivian Lanzot, director of Community and Public Service in the Career Development Services office; and Roberto Rojas-Cessa, professor in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).
Atilla Sivri - ECE PhD Student of the Month - October 2023
Atilla Sivri is a Ph.D. student in the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He has the privilege of working under the guidance of Dr. Moshe Kam, who is his Ph.D. advisor, and the Dean of the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). His primary research focus is on refining pulse oximetry sensors. These sensors play a pivotal role in health monitoring and are often used by nurses and doctors to quickly assess the condition of a patient presented to them.

New Jersey Institute of Technology’s rise in national rankings continues, with U.S. News & World Report placing NJIT No. 86 among national universities for 2024 — a jump of 11 rungs from 2023.
Yongjie Guan - ECE PhD Student of the Month - September 2023
Yongjie Guan is a fifth-year Ph.D. student whose passion lies at the intersection of technology, research, and real-world problem solving. With a background that spans both academia and practical application. He is deeply invested in designing and deploying real systems such as Augmented Reality/Mixed Reality (AR/MR) systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems, and distributed machine learning systems.
NJIT Earns National Distinction for 'Best Value' From Niche
Economic mobility was a new factor in Niche ranking New Jersey Institute of Technology No. 45 among all U.S. institutions for “Best Value,” reaffirming the university’s return on investment to its students and alumni. NJIT earned the No. 1 spot for “Best Value” among New Jersey public institutions.
Niche, a college ranking and review platform, evaluated 4,048 public and private four-year colleges nationwide and developed separate lists for the best academics, value, food, dorms and college life.
Army Supports Summer Interns, Designing New Robots at NJIT Research Center
A little-known R&D facility, operated by NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute with the U.S. Army Picatinny Arsenal for its primary client, is beginning to thrive one year after moving off-campus.
The facility is called COMET — Collaborative Operationalized Manufacturing Engineering and Training — located about 30 miles northwest of NJIT’s Newark campus, close to Picatinny, which is the Army headquarters for conventional weapons development.
NJIT Showcases the Most Impactful Research and Innovation from Students
Stuti Mohan, a senior biomedical engineering student, was the winner of the top Dr. James F. Stevenson Innovation Award at the 2023 Undergraduate Summer Research and Innovation (URI) Symposium at NJIT.
Her project sought to identify a non-invasive yet precise method to diagnose the tapping foot of a subject. Mohan’s research area in the Sensorimotor Quantification and Rehabilitation Lab (SQRL) is the ongoing pursuit of improving concussion management.

Yuan Zhao is in his third year of pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Under the advisement of Dr. Ali Abdi at the Center for Wireless Information Processing, his research focuses on developing engineering-oriented methods to model decision making processes with rational inattention in economics and financial markets.

Mohammad Mostafa Al Mahfuz - ECE PhD Student of the Month - July 2023
Mohammad Mostafa Al Mahfuz is a Ph.D. candidate at the Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He is currently working in the Nanoelectronic Materials and Devices Lab (NMD) under the supervision of Professor Dong-Kyun Ko. His research focuses on colloidal quantum dots for infrared detectors and vertical thin film transistors.
